I think that we know what we're looking at; I know that I'm getting the best available stream because I'm watching on the PS3 and I can ask what the encoding is. (I use the term "shuddering" because I'm not sure that it's actual judder; I haven't seen it on anything in quite a while--I did say that it was something from when they started out. If you want to see what I mean by "shuddering", watch Planet 51). Starz varies in quality from title to title and I have seen things that were STD DVD quality and therefore tolerable--Camelot was not one of them.

EDIT: Unfortunately, Planet 51 is gone and I don't remember another title with the video stuttering problem in motion scenes that was as bad as it was. Believe me, it was a problem on older titles.

Been watching STARZ for about a year now and NEVER "studder" nor "judder" here. I use a LG BD570 and view on a Mits 73" so I think I'd see either/or rather easily. And I have seen NADA beyond excellent programs.

I've been watching Netflix streaming since a couple of months after they introduced it on PC (called "Watch Now" then, I think), about a year before it appeared on consumer AV devices--I watched my first 100 or so titles that way, on a PC connected to the same big screen panel and AVR that I watch all of my other video AV equipment on. (According to my account, my first streaming title was Sense and Sensibility, viewed on 5/5/07; they added Starz Play in October of 2008). You're very lucky not to have run into it--there was much discussion of the effect in these forums.

Does anyone remember some of the early crappy Starz Play titles which might still be around?

I think I'm looking at someone suffering from "Random Caps Lock Syndrome".

Standard def widescreen DVD quality is the lowest I'm willing to accept--I'll have to find some other way to watch the rest of the Camelot season 1 episodes.

Just checked out Camelot because of this discussion and it is definitely a pretty soft picture - i think DVD would look better, too

For my fellow Boomers: the original TV version of Mission Impossible is on Instant View. Brings back fun old memories, and even my teenagers love it!

To those too young to remember this TV show - this is your chance!

Good luck. This tape will self destruct in 5 seconds.

Just started watching Battlestar Galactica. I had never seen this show, but while it was on the air it got rave reviews. Figured I'd give it a shot, and watched the Miniseries and the first episode all in one sitting. I'll probably be done with the series in a few weeks!

I have been meaning to post here regarding the "Dark Shadows" sci-fi/horror soap opera we have been watching. We were hooked after one or two episodes. The acting is melodramatic, the actors forget their lines and you can see the shadow of the microphone every now and then. I understand that this series ran on ABC during the late 60's and was their first soap to win it's time slot. We have been watching at least three or four episodes a night and loving it!

I watched the whole series, but it is MUCH better with 5.1 audio (and BBC America is showing it that way). IMO, the end of the series was somewhat of a letdown.

The Netflix episodes are HD and 5.1.

It's presented with 5.1 audio on Netflix if you have one of the devices which support it. The last I knew, these were PS3, Apple TV 2, WD TV Plus, Boxee Box (I think) and 2011 Panasonic Viera Cast/Viera Link products (assuming--I know that the player in the DMP-BDTx10 series of BD players supports 5.1 and closed captions, since I have the BDT110). I suspect there are others by now--it's been a while since I heard about the last one being added.

On the PS3, of course, it's also available in 1080p (most HD titles are).

"200 Motels" the wacky 1971 film by Frank Zappa is now available in the OAR of 16:9. I had the VHS tape (not sure it was ever issued on DVD) which was 4:3. This movie was shot with video and transfered to film.

Unfortunately (for me), it's still not 5.1 on the Boxee Box

I would love to watch something instantly but I keep getting error messages. Haven't been able to watch consistently for the last week or so.

Sorry--didn't mean to rub it in .

I've updated my Official List of Netflix Watch Instantly Titles w/5.1 Sound, BTW--111 new titles (first update in 3 months--ugh).

I have been having off and on issues with Netflix with my TiVo Premiere (exclusively during primetime I believe). Most of the time it's fine especially if the title starts. Right now I'm getting... An error occurred communicating with Netflix. Please try again. Everything else network wise works great. I can handle the error messages. What really gets me is when it tries to stream and can't. TiVo freezes, locks-up and or reboots. Get old real quick!

Cool so my 55in viera will have 5.1 sound from NF. My TV arrives tomorrow.

It should have the Viera Link system with an app store that you can get new stuff from. Make sure to post here to confirm that you are seeing the 5.1 sound option on descriptions (only about 25-30% of HD titles have 5.1 sound--see my list for some to check out); I'll update the list of 5.1 capable players.

I was updating the "Official List of Netflix Watch Instantly Titles w/5.1 Sound " recently and I ran across a few that I can heartily recommend:
  • 21 Grams (2003)
A not-particularly-easy-to-watch but fiercely well acted film about death, grief, revenge and repentence with Sean Penn, Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro.
  • Mimic (1997)
Scary cautionary tale of the potential hazards of bioengineering. With Mira Sorvino, Josh Brolin, Charles S. Dutton and F. Murray Abraham.
  • Monsters (2010)
(Previously mentioned by others). Low-budget-but-you-wouldn't-know-it sci-fi flick. Sort of a cross between Cloverfield and Lost in Translation . I liked it a lot.
  • Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
Quirky tale of a lonely guy, dominated all of his life by his large group of older sisters, who finds true love and deals with an extortionist. IMO, far and away Adam Sandler's best acting turn, also featuring good performances by Emily Watson and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, of Boogie Nights, Magnolia and There Will Be Blood fame.
Like everything in that 5.1 list, these are present in HD with DD+ 5.1 sound, if you have equipment which can handle it (PS3, Apple TV 2, 2011 Panasonic BD players and TVs with Viera Cast/Viera Link apps, WD Live Plus--there may be more that I don't know about). Monsters and Mimic gain a lot from 5.1 sound but are worth watching without it.

Excellent suggestions. I love 21 grams

Not everyone can get BBC America in HD yet though

Or they'll put it in a second tier where you have to also buy the slop in the first tier to get the gourmet stuff. Such practices ought to be illegal.

I just finished watching camelot. It was OK, I'd give it a 7/10.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
They focused too much on merlin, killed off the best actor (james purefoy) too soon and not enough fighting.

It would be nice if netflix would bring the other season(s) to streaming.

(updated with spoiler tag )

As a courtesy, you might want to conceal your spoilers. And I'm guessing that you meant "it would be nice if netflix would bring any future seasons to streaming as well", since that was the first season, the final episode of which aired on Starz a month ago. Of course, as indicated by the post that you quoted, there's not going to be any future seasons, so you've just watched "Camelot: The Complete Series" .

For anyone who may have missed it years ago. Based on a best-selling novel.

Exactly, and why would I bother watch them on BBC America when I have a Netflix device that is capable of 5.1 and HD, and will show me the episode I want to watch without commercials instantly?
