Netflix Watch Instantly: Gems and Finds - Page 55

+1 for Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. Very clever, well-acted, and funnier than most movies that are reputedly "hilarious".

The HD quality is awesome as well. This is the first title on Netflix streaming that I really feel is a step above upconverted DVD quality. (Roku 2 XS)

I went to the bottom of the page, under "More Like Lucky" there is a pretty interesting lineup.

I picked "A Fork In The Road" and about died having smart fun, great, absolutely great comedy of errors, with the right ingredient of all human instincts:

I watched Outrage on Bluray last night but as of yesterday (?) it's also available streaming. Good action film about a conflict between Yakuza families and actually I enjoyed the extras on the BD. Takeshi "Beat" Kitano both acts and directs.

Kitano fan myself , had bought the BD of Outrage also. Good film to be able to stream.

Sonatine http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Sona...?trkid=2361637 by Kitano, can also be streamed on Netflix in HD, and the subs are correct vs the dvd.

Love the soundtrack done by the great Joe Hisaishi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Hisaishi

Netflix has "re-issued" the Millenium Trilogy films as "Dragon Tatoo Trilogy: Extended Edition". They chopped it into six pieces. I wonder who was responsible for this (the studio from whence they came or Netflix) and if they improved the truly horrendous PQ of the final two films (which was in evidence in the BDs as well).

EDIT: I watched a little of it and I think that it's a new transfer with improved PQ (they still have the old titles and I watched a bit of them for comparison); there's a patina of grain, but it all seems much sharper now. It would have been pretty disappointing if they hadn't worked on that since it's a new edit (the "extended" part). They've wrapped it up like a BBC mini-series, with "previously on" sequences at the beginning of each segment and TV-esque title sequence graphics. I think that I might watch it over.

EDIT: EDIT: I see that this has been released on BD and that it has 3 hours of added feature content, supposedly more closely following the books.

Finally got around to watching this. Pretty decent and somewhat different revenge movie with a few good twists throughout.

Here's the link to I Saw the Devil

I also watched the first episode of Peep Show based on your guys' recommendation (never heard of it). It was ok, but it's a bit early for me make a judgement based on one episode. I'm going to stick with it for a couple of season since the reviews are through the roof and I've read it picks up a bit in season 2. Too bad it's in SD (and the first episode did not look good)

I admire your fortitude, anything in SD is a no-go for me.

The audio is pretty bad too IMO, but it is for most of the British shows on Netflix for some reason.

And I still have about 100 movies in my disc queue that are only available on ** gasp ** DVD. I am a monster. Don't look at me....

Okay, I won't. Kidding. Usually when someone says SD I think regular DVD quality without upscaling which I don't think anyone (willing) does anymore. When SD is not upscaled it looks pretty bad on a 120" screen.

I was under the impression that the original movies were made from a Swedish TV miniseries.
So, I think this new release might be to present it in its original TV release format.

Mitch

I thought they were three separate feature films.

Just finished this one up. Great movie, and stands alone from the first one (you don't have to see it to understand this one, although I'd still recommend it since it too is a great movie....just not available on streaming).

Also watched Revenge of the Electric Car, a great follow up to Who Killed the Electric Car? (not available on streaming). While the first one was a little depressing towards the end as they kill off the EV1, this one goes into the more modern push towards electric cars that GM (Volt), Nissan (Leaf), Tesla, and some guy just building one in his garage are doing.

They were released as individual films first in February, September and November of 2009, then shown in this extended form on Swedish television in 2010. From the Wikipedia article:
Quote:

The Swedish film production company Yellow Bird has produced film versions of the Millennium Trilogy, co-produced with The Danish film production company Nordisk Film and television company,[16] which were released in Scandinavia in 2009. In 2010, the films were shown in an extended version of approximately 180 minutes per film as a six-part miniseries (each film divided in two parts of 90 minutes) on Swedish television. This version was released on July 14, 2010 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in three separate sets and on November 24, 2010 as a Complete Millennium Trilogy box set with an extra disc.

So this new version is that extended-length TV cut, adding about an hour to each of the three films.

Watched "Quarantine 2" and liked it much better than the first one.

The Ernie Kovacs Collection.

If you don't know who he was, start with the last few episodes of this collection of visual and musical humor and character sketches.

I was reading the recently-released-to-disc list at RottenTomatoes.com and noticed that this was a mondo gigantic critical hit: enjoyed by 95% of critics and 92% of audience members (see this).

Nice find! It's at the top of my queue. I see it's made a cool $100,000 so far.

I love when I take a chance on something NOT in this thread and find a new "gem" that hasn't been mentioned yet:

If you like time-loop movies (Timecrimes, Triangle, and dare I say Groundhog Day), give Repeaters a chance. I was just browsing recommended movies and found it. It took about 30-40 minutes to get going, but once it did, I really liked the plotline. There was some stupidity throughout, but did enjoy it, and Amanda Crew (or as I like to call her, Mmmmmmanda) is easy on the eyes.

Be sure to stick with the credits for an additional minute or so for a nice little bonus (I turned it off until I was reading the IMDB reviews so went back to see it).

Arsinee Khanijan, Atom Egoyan's wife at her best, i watched this movie
the second night with the wife, even better than the first time!

Plot around inhibited mostly homebound dutiful Arabic daughter
in a patriarchal family dominated by the older brother. Everything
changes when she meets a Canadian carpenter. Interestlngly enough,
Atom Egoyan's parents owned a furniture shop in Egypt, you notice
the connection in the movie:

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Sa...?trkid=2361637

Of course lurking around i had be reminded again about the Armenian Genocide in "The Lark Farm"
another of Arsinee's movies. I read Franz Werfel's "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh" as a teenager
and it left a deep impression. I did not have the nerve to watch this movie knowing the horrors
described in the book.

The housemaid"

Another good/crazy Korean movie

Yet another +1 for Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. It has Wash (Firefly) and Sock (Reaper) as the two leads... A quirky, bloody comedy.

I recommended this before, almost exactly two years ago, but I'm going to mention it again. I really enjoyed Skins, a BBC drama about a group of kids in senior high school (which they call "sixth form college"), in the city of Bristol. Very raw, no holds barred stuff, well written and acted. Netflix has 5 seasons, or "series"--series 6 is airing now. Each cast gets two series (someone's little sister bled over into series 3), so series 5 starts a 3rd cast. (One of the series 1 & 2 actors went on to play the lead in Slumdog Millionaire).

It came to mind today because I heard Spandau Ballet's "True" in a television car ad and thought of a cute scene in Skins which used the song very creatively (series 4, episode 6 at 43:30). I looked up the scene on Netflix and played it. I think that I'll go back and watch the whole thing over (and I haven't watched series 5 at all yet).

I found a TV show called "Fear Itself," which was apparently aired on NBC during 2008. It's an anthology horror series with each episode featuring a different director, cast, and writers -- similar to Masters of Horror.

I watched the first episode entitled "The Eater" last night. It was pretty good for TV horror. The ending seemed a bit abrupt and forced, but all in all it was very good for a TV horror show. Thumbs up.

Lilyhammer seems like a good tv show
