I merely posted the info since no one else had at that point .. for informational purposes only

Since technically on AVS a spoiler is generally considered information on a show that has not aired, "House of Cards" in it's entirety is fair discussion game .. not that I'm going to .. but, as someone mentioned earlier, best to watch completely then before visiting and reading any AVS or for that matter, Web content on the show ..

I tend to save up series episodes and watch a show in a marathon session as I prefer that way .. and I make it a point to never visit a thread on that show until I am done .. case in point "Homeland" .. just finished last season a week ago .. yet subscribe to the "Homeland" thread and it was pretty active during the airing .. was tough to stay away ...

I liked the first episode of "House of Cards" but was wondering through it if it will play well because I'm thinking that Americans may be getting tired of politics and even political intrigue. It will be interesting to see how well it goes over. David Fincher (co showrunner) directed the first episode.

Americans getting tired of politics .. ?? It's our National past time .. wink.gif

Thanks to politics I have to show my sexual orientation identification card to get a chicken sandwich and I have to google which pizza place didn't fire employees for healthcare costs before I order.

Not for everyone but "Amber Alert" is now available. I'm coining the term "folk movies" for this genre because it is basically a small independent production using the reality show conceit. In fact the conceit is that the young couple is making an audition video for a reality show when they spot the car with the license mentioned on the amber alert sign and trail the car. The woman will probably drive a lot of the folks here nuts with obsession to keep following the car. "Folk movies" because like "folk music" it has simple production values.

This was in the first review I read of this movie with them saying how downright annoying it is to listen to them go back and forth what seems like forever on whether they should continue to follow. That and the acting is atrocious, so for those two reasons I couldn't be bothered.

This one is pure cinéma, kino etc. ie anything that stands between us and Hollywood's denizen catering spree.
It is about fellings and a lot happens with nonverbal comms, due to superb acting and directing. Cannot find link:

I watched some the first episode of "The Story of Film" which seems to have been added this last week. The first episode covers the beginning with Edison and Lumière brothers work. It also showed a widescreen film of a boxing match shot in 1897 on 63mm film. Yup, widescreen goes back that far. The Lumière's 1:66:1 films are almost that compared to Dickson's 4:3 curse.

A Separation - 2011 Iranian foreign film (subtitled)

Holy crap, was this a good film. Initially depressing, centered around real life "adult" family difficulties, which I wasn't in the mood for. At all. But after 20 minutes or so, I was hooked big time, sucked into the tensions and unanswered questions. By the end, wow, soooo glad I kept with it. There is one aspect which remains unresolved at the end so if you need clean 'n tidy resolutions to your film experiences, well, I say see this one anyway and just deal with it. Check out the dual critics & audience rating on the rottentomatoes site. Doesn't get much higher than that.

"The Touch" starring the ever beautiful-and butt kicking, Michelle Yeoh, is an entertaining action film. Also, there's  another new arrival, "Quick", an absolutely insane subtitled Korean action comedy filled with motorcycle chases, wild stunts and lots of explosions.

That's been in my disc queue for awhile(long wait), it looks clear now and is the next to be delivered. It's not a Watch Instantly title though is it?

Oops, I did it again. I see the Netflix part of the title and forget about the instant watch thing. redface.gif

So no, it was a disc-based Netflix viewing.

Haha, yes, I've done that before too! smile.gif

At least I know now that it will be a worthwhile selection, so thanks for that!

You're welcome, just hope I didn't overpraise too much as that often leads to viewer letdown no matter how good something is.

No worries, I'm a big fan of foreign films, especially from that part of the world, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. smile.gif

I watched "Compliance" last night which is based on a true story of some idiot calling around to fast food places and punking the managers into doing terrible and illegal things to a employee. It's a very riveting watch and says something about how dumbed down our society has become for anyone to actually pull off such a punking stunt.

I actually got angry watching this, seeing how stupid these people were. mad.gif

I'm into episode 11 of "House of Cards". 13 episodes , so 2 more to go and it is heating up! If you like Kevin Spacey it's a no brainer. I really enjoy the parts where he channels his inner Hannibal Lecter and Machiavelli. Great snide, political commentary and frighteningly believable events. No different than watching the news except we get to see the why. Don't know how the business end of this works for Netflix but I think they're on to something. I don't get HBO so this is as good as it gets for me. Bring on Season 2, whenever that is.

It's been much discussed. You might want to search the thread before posting.

Watched this awhile ago and enjoyed it a lot. Based on the famous Milgram experiments and if you are interested here is the link to the in-depth original article. It's long but incredibly interesting and covers every aspect of the case.

I read the same article from a link in the IMDB discussion group on the film. I kept thinking "none of these people never even watched a stupid police procedural show on TV?" If they had they might and thought something was a bit awry.

There was an episode of L&O: SVU several seasons back called "Authority" (every episode title of SVU is a single word) in which Robin Williams guest stars as an engineer who plays exactly the same sorts of games. It begins with him impersonating a police officer over the phone and telling a male fast food restaurant manager to strip search a young female employee, which he does, which gets him indicted for some sex crime and jailed. I think that he might have actually identified himself as "Officer Milgram" biggrin.gif.

I'm sure no matter how I ask this, it won't come across right, but I'll ask any way. Just keep in mind, it's not complaining or racially motivated.

What is with the huge influx of Asian movies recently? It seems like this last month has been inundated with a ton of Asian foreign films.

People are just starting to get up on the Asian genre. My wife LOVES "foreign" movies period but they are really producing some great flicks from the Asian market. A lot of really good thought-provoking films recently.
