Netflix Watch Instantly: Gems and Finds - Page 74

"Doomsday Book" is a good Korean comedy-horror-scifi flic. Some of Hollywood's newbie horror directors need to watch a bunch of these to see how it's done. So much that is supposed to be "horror" out of Hollywood these days isn't even scary. This film, especially the first story leans heavily into the dark comedy venue.

I've seen several very good SciFi-ish Korean movies, although I don't know if these are available for streaming, and I can't remember all of the titles:
"I'm a Cyborg but that's OK"
Comedy/monster movie about a monster in a river next to Seoul, and a family affected by it.
Revenge-style movie about a guy held in a room for many years, then tries to find and kill those who held him after he escapes.

I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK is available from Netflix as is Oldboy, which may or may not be the film you described as, "Revenge-style movie about a guy held in a room for many years, then tries to find and kill those who held him after he escapes." The Host is probably "Comedy/monster movie about a monster in a river next to Seoul, and a family affected by it", though Netflix's description does not make it out to be a comedy. Of course, I didn't think Trollhunter (which I liked a lot) was intended to be funny, though others did smile.gif.

Thanks, those are correct. A little over a year ago when 'At the Movies' was back on PBS, they recommended those. "The Host" isn't directly a comedy, but it does have some silly moments, and pokes fun at a few things. I also did see "Trollhunter". I generally don't go for horror movies, but some of these comic/satiric styles ones can be fun.

Two great docs-Undefeated, last year's Oscar winner, about an inner-city football team's season and Side by Side, about the impact of digital photography on the motion picture industry.

Greetings All

I normally come here to get suggestions not to offer one:)

I stumbled across Dollhouse and just finished both seasons, I actually enjoyed it.

If you like the first episode then you'll enjoy the series.

Sorry if this has been suggested before

Finishing off the third story in "Doomsday Book" was a little difficult due to Netflix only showing around 2 mbps of speed even though my broadband connection is around 11 mbps and tested that way. But it was in 8 PM hour and probably much demand on Netflix servers which is the most likely cause though I'm sure our venerable IT managers here might want to argue otherwise. Returning later around 9:45 proved successful. The rebuffering session would seem to get 2 minutes of HD stream then when that played out stopped and rebuffered another two minutes again. After giving up during the 8 PM hour I watched another episode of "The History of Film" which is SD so no problem.

After "Doomsday Book" I decided to watch "Creep Van" which is listed as "popular on Netflix." Even though a low budget indie I often find that being long on imagination and low of budget is better than plenty of budget but low imagination or studio curbed imagination. Lots of gore of course in "Creep Van" but I enjoyed it.

I've given up trying to use Netflix during 'prime time'. It's always overloaded, even though speed tests are fine. I'll watch regular TV, a BD, or OnDemand, or even just read a book instead.

I have open connect and I've watched Netflix during prime time quite often recently and had no issues. However, I found that some less popular indie titles or so called B movies throttle down to SD quality momentarily regardless of my internet speed.

Prime time is the only time I watch and haven't see any problems at all.

It's hit or miss and as some of us think it is dependent on the title. Some of us notice it on more popular titles. Saturday night I was able to finish off the rest of one HD title without rebuffering which I had on it the night before then when I selected a second HD title and not necessarily a popular one later I got it served at ~2 mbps and SD. Usually I skip Netflix weekends and rent a disc from Redbox or occasionally a PPV from Vudu or Amazon where I don't see any problem.

The Mooring. Good horror movie. Takes place in hillbilly country somewhere, of course !!

That's because by that time I had already finished watching my buffer free movies on Netflix. wink.gif

It was quite good. Like an episode of Twilight Zone. The robot story was really good.

It's not just Netflix, it's a whole host of internet services, try watching ESPN 3 or regular HULU around 6:30pm or so. Now as you cross the barrier of 7:30pm watch your buffer on Hulu and watch your PQ quality sink on ESPN 3. If everybody is going stream the infrastructure is going to need some work.

When I watched Dollhouse a year or two ago, I really really liked the first season and the second season started out great .. I felt like it ended with a thump not a bang .. Whedon perhaps let it slide as he eased into bigger and more money making projects ..

Also, I don't want to sound like an ass here but I value this thread as a source of NF "Gems and Finds" .. not as a complaint thread for NF streaming issues .. there are plenty enough threads on that topic without bringing it here ..

Wait a minute, this isn't the Netflix streaming quality thread?

You don't sound like an ass and you're right. Those with streaming issues to discuss should take it somewhere else. cool.gif

OK, maybe the next time I have particular buffering issues I'll start a topic on rebuffering but for all services so that we don't have a rebuffering topic for Netflix, Redbox, Vudu, Amazon, Hulu, yada, yada, yada. There are some of other topics like that here but perhaps too specific. And certainly anyone else should feel free to do start it if I don't get to it.

Safety Not Guaranteed is a sweet movie; it touches on some deep subjects with a light and comical touch. smile.gif

Agreed it's sweet, yet it doesn't get in the way of the humor.

The Korean film Missing is not a bad thriller (not really a horror film). It is in SD and some of the second line of subtitles will get cut off if you have overscan. I'm just finishing up The Story of Film, a 15 episode series which I've recommended before. If you are a film buff it is a must. You will never look at film the same again. It's SD too but SD stuff is great for those rebuffer nights. wink.gif
