If you care about their suggestion system (and Netflix cares a lot about it; they used to give a million dollar prize to any team who could improve on it) then you need to "feed" it by spending some time rating titles that you've seen.
Yeah just star the ones you've seen. Feeding it is helpful until you watch a children's movie then it gets stupid and starts suggesting "Family Friendly Serial Killer Movies." I've had to go in and clear my history out a couple of times.

Frankly the Netflix suggestion system is useless. We do rate most things we watcxh.

If you watch a Brit TV show it then starts suggesting all Brit TV shows paying no attention to the type of show........

It get's worse when different family members have different tastes.

Yes I remember the million $ prize - but for us the suggestion algorithms still don't work. I just checked the first 10 'suggestion for us' - we have absolutely no interest in any of them.

This is actually one of the biggest problems with Netflix - there is a tremendous amount of really good material available - it is just really hard to find.
Also, on the Netflix web site, there is a 'Taste Profile' link at the top. That can let you fine-tune your tastes to further help the recommendations be more accurate. The Taste Preferences in particular can help, in addition to the ratings showing more movies and shows to rate.

If you haven't updated your taste preferences, you may want to. I remember doing it some time ago, and now there are ALOT more categories and subcategories.

6 Souls is a very well done supernatural thriller with Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers that is actually scarier than some of the horror films I watch.

Ian biggrin.gif

It's very nicely encoded so you will be using up a bit of bandwidth. Of course I started watching it at 11 PM Saturday night intending to finish it another night but didn't. Netflixers must've found something better to do at 11 PM. biggrin.gif

if anybody has any doubts about Netflix's future plans to compete with the likes of HBO and Showtime when it comes to producing their own content, the success of House of Cards, which receive 9 Emmy nominations, and the recent success of Orange Is The New Black, may sway them to think differently.

^^^ never doubted it .. the only way to compete and avoid the continually escalating cost of outside content is to roll your own .. and they are doing a great job of it ..

If you like black comedy's give The Details with Tobey Maguire and the gorgeous Elizabeth Banks a try.

Let me guess, too much rebuffering for anyone to watch NF? biggrin.gif

No rebuffering on Errors of the Human Body an excellent German film in English. Probably because it may have been added on Friday so no one knew about it (all of 4 reviews showing).

Similarly no problem watching Antiviral either earlier in the week. This Brandon Cronenberg film was probably too disgusting for some folks to watch but well worth a watch and kind of a "dark satire" given the subject matter.

Likewise Eve of Destruction is an interesting Canadian science fiction two parter about things going awry at a particle accelerator.

So much for the geek offerings of the week.

They've revamped the list/queue and it seems to work pretty good.

Arghh! This screws me royally! They did not need to add this for US customers--the Instant Queue worked perfectly fine. I was using a browser extension for reordering my queue which no longer works. I have all my movies at the front of my IQ in alphabetical order and my TV shows at the rear of it in reverse alphabetical order.

My Queue has remained in it's order. One of the articles I've read (at engadget) mentioned that you could turn off the reordering. Have you gone into the Setting and tried to see if you could rest it back o the way you had it?

I see a ''Change order to NETFLIX SUGGESTS'' (with NF Suggests as a link) at the top on the page. If yours is different, perhaps clicking there will reset it for your account and allow your plug in to function.

Oh my queue is still in the order that I left it in. My concern is that I've lost my tools for re-ordering it and gained absolutely nothing. It's not an improvement at all for US customers AFAICT. Customers in other regions didn't have an IQ so it's a massive boon for them.

Hopefully the people who created the browser extension that I use, Netflix Queue Sorter, will update it to work in the new system. If you click "see all" for "My List" and then "Manual" you get the old IQ list view which can be ordered manually by clicking and dragging list entries or by manually entering position numbers. I can't see a way to get back to their poster thumb grid view of "My List" but I don't care--I'd never use it.

Hmm...I see they are still testing different features. There is no ''Manual' on my Home page. Just ''My List'' then ''see all''...And I never had the grid view before today's (unnecessary in the US) revamp.

Queue vs My List....and someone thought ''My List'' was cooler? Gagh... cool.gif

You have to click "see all" first (thought that was clear), then the "manual" thing is at the top of the grid on the right.

Are any of you who are using Unblockus able to add to the list in other regions than the one you reside in?

I see the list in other regions but can only add to it in the UK Netflix region (where I am from).

I understood. What you're seeing on yours, is not present on mine. wink.gif ''See all'' on mine, goes directly to the List. No ''Manual''... no other features are there.

"See all" goes directly to the list for me as well, it's just that the "Manual" thing appeared as a button at the top of the list. It's set to manual now with no clear way to go back to the grid view without re-ordering my list (the control at the top where "Manual" was reads "Change Order To: Netflix Suggests"; I don't even know if that would return to the grid view) or I'd do a screen capture and post it.

I can no longer see or search the Netflix libraries in other regions from the web site, period. I killed my browser and tried again (with region set to "Brazil")--no dice. I can see the library of other regions in the Win8 app, Roku 3 and presumably other embedded players. (The experiment did show me that Beautiful Creatures, Parker and Side Effects are available in the Brazil region, so it wasn't a total waste biggrin.gif. Also Olympus Has Fallen and The Call, though I've seen them. Of course, you have to watch them with either Brazilian Portuguese or Spanish subs).

EDIT: Now I can suddenly see the Brazilian area library in the web site browser and play titles from there, but it's like before--there's no option to view "My List" or to add anything to it. I can still get things listed in "Recently Watched" when using that region by playing them for a minute or so.

Abduction of Eden is an excellent film based on a true story about a girl who was abducted and forced into slavery as a prostitute. Funny thing was that I was thinking it was filmed probably in the Mojave and didn't recognize my native Eastern Washington until the end when I thought the "lake" at the end looked like one of the "lakes" on the Columbia River. The whole film was shot in Washington state.

Using the Netflix app on my Android tablet, I can add titles to My list (seriously, not a very cool name to rebrand Queue) while visiting other regions. But they haven't yet enabled Profiles on Android yet-at least, not on my Acer 500 tab, so all titles will only be added to the primary account profile, and My List will display on the app, when in alternate regions. Titles in your queue in your home region, will be present if  they are  also available in another.

I see that the 2012 version of Dredd with Karl Urban and Lena Headey is available. No 5.1 sound and it's the rare 720p-only HD title that's not "Available in HD on your TV"; it's 720p in PC players as well.

Good flick--not to be confused with Judge Dredd (1995), the horrible Sylvester Stallone mess.

If I'm not mistaken, when I rented the BD, it wasn't in lossless audio, just lossy 5.1 DD. So I'm not surprised that they watered down the streaming version. even further.

According to the HighDefDigest.com review the audio on the BD was 7.1 channel DTS-HD MA; they gave it 5 out of 5 stars for audio quality. I just watched the first 20 minutes; the Pro Logic encoding isn't bad.

These things have a weird way of gradually upgrading. I wouldn't be surprised to see it get Super HD video encodes and a DD+ track. I'll bet that it has them already in other Netflix regions. (EDIT: I was wrong about that last--it's not available in any other Netflix regions).

I was referring to the rental version, not a retail copy.

No extras on a rental BD I can understand but skimping on the soundtrack? That doesn't make much sense.

It's not that uncommon at all, I've had several BD rentals that were lacking the retail quality soundtracks.
I rented the Dredd BD at Redbox. It was not a special rental disc and had extras. I don't think Lions Gate does rental editions and neither does Sony. Thats just some silliness mainly of FOX (for most films), Universal and Warner Brothers.

Yeah, it depends on the studio, with those you mentioned usually being the biggest offenders.
