Netflix Watch Instantly: Gems and Finds - Page 91

I'd never heard of Europa Report but when I added it to My List I noticed that they had The Host. I mention it because it was a moderately big release, starring Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, Atonement both much better films) and William Hurt. It's a not particularly good science fiction romance aimed at a young adult audience, adapted from a Stephenie Meyer novel (the Twilight author).

+1 for Europa Report

We rented it (from iTunes I think - but maybe Vudu) a couple of months ago when it was still in theaters.

Should have waited and seen it on Netflix.

(likewise when I bought Season 1 of Arrow on Blu-Ray a couple of months ago and then it appeared on Netflix - need to learn patience.....)

007 in Skyfall, just added today. Again, no previous word that it would be added to Instant Watch.

Didn't NF stop giving out release dates and what not a while back .. ?? It seemed like Instantwatcher.com had some article on that .. ??

Yes, they did halt releasing upcoming and expiring title data to third party websites, but some sources continue to recieve word on upcoming films and series. How, I don't quite know. feedfliks.com was barren for several months, but now, in the last 3 weeks, has fully populated Upcoming and Expiring Soon columns back to their previous selves. And the ''Instant Watch Browser for Netflix'' app available on the Roku, continued to list titles in both sections.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to give feedfliks.com a try .. I've always disliked the fact that NF does not make it easy to find what's coming up in the next month or two .. it's not like they don't know ..

If you click "Latest Netflix Movies" at TVandMoviesNow.com (AVS forum member RangerOne's site) it will give you a list of movies sorted by descending released-to-Netflix date; this has never stopped working. For some reason it only shows the latest 729. The page is updated nightly so you won't see things added today. Sadly his page can no longer determine whether Netflix titles are HD or not; I have informed him.

Skyfall is SuperHD but does not have DD+ 5.1 sound, a crime for an action adventure. No doubt they'll add it at some point. I really enjoyed the movie when I streamed it from VUDU.

As bad as Netflix is Amazon is worse. You reeeaallly have to work to mine that service unless it's a new release/rental.

TVandMoviesNow can also give you a list of "Latest Amazon Prime Movies". (Wow--Amazon now has a series of Calculus Tutor films; gotta get those on my WatchList biggrin.gif)!

EDIT: Sorry--the list does not appear to be accurate.

I noticed Flight also does not have 5.1

No, it does not, though Flight only has one action scene. Dredd also lacks 5.1 sound, though it started as 720p-only and is now Super HD. These things slowly get features added. I think that The Hunger Games, for instance, started as 720p-only with no 5.1 sound and is now Super HD w/DD+. Lots of others have experienced similar transformations (including Transformers: Dark of the Moon, pun intended biggrin.gif).

At this point I'd love an option to block certain networks programming from showing up.

When I watched Dredd I'm fairly sure it was in 5.1, but that was a while back; I usually don't bother with a film like that on Netflix unless it's in 5.1 as that's a good part of why I'll watch it. I've wondered why some films they will show in HD but not 5.1. I'd saved Flight without noticing it wasn't 5.1, so might hold off on re-watching that....

It is Original Aspect Ratio though - so better than some of the premium cable companies (HBO yes I am talking about you).

I agree I have watched a number of movies on Netflix where 5.1 audio was added later - seems a shame though as many will watch the movie when it is first on Netflix.

Yet another show added where I bought the Blu-Ray earlier this year - I do need patience.

I really buy/rent very little - maybe 6 -8 titles this year and Netflix has already added 50% of them (a good sign really)

Dredd was 2.0 when I watched it just after it became available on Netflix.

If it was in 5.1 when you watched it was only for a limited period of time or only for you smile.gif. It was 720p-only, stereo only when it was added; as I stated above, it has since become Super HD but is still stereo-only.

Flight really isn't an action adventure. There's just that one sequence where digital 5.1 sound can be appreciated; the bulk of the film is about Denzel's character's drinking problem and the legal trouble he's in despite having saved the lives of his crew and passengers.

Pro Logic matrix surround survives in the stereo mixes so they're not horrible to listen to.

It's possible I'm wrong on Dredd but I don't think so; I will usually not watch anything but the 5.1 offerings (if I don't see HD/5.1 I generally don't bother at all). I have seen the offerings vary, though, over time. I just wondeer the rhyme/reason Netflix uses for this, bandwidth I suppose to an extent, perhaps some demand algorithm, but there are films with even less interesting action/soundtrack than Flight they'll provide in 5.1 (altho it seems that more is now in 5.1 generally; I've seen Flight already on BD, am aware of what is in it, thanks).

Watched Dead Man Down tonight, good flick....

Watched "Europa Report" yesterday. Very good and realistic. It streamed the whole time in full 1080HD, with clean buffering visible on the Ethernet switch (about 1 sec of activity every 3-4 seconds). I then tried to watch and episode "Star Trek: Enterprise" immediately after. It would barely stream at 240SD, with continuous buffering! WTF???

I watched Europa last night based on the earlier recommendation .. I had never heard of this film and I must say, it was a very good movie, showed what a low budget feature could be when done right, had excellent PQ even at 120", some of it looked like it was filmed with a GoPro cam but it all worked ...

It beats out many of the bigger budget stuff .. kept me engaged throughout ..

Highest recommendation on this one ... smile.gif

Interesting cast...added!

I watched Europa Report too last night. Most of it was clean SuperHD. I have to do some research but they seem to be using a different encoding scheme when the stream drops down in bitrate which gives a grainy effect instead of blurring. "Zombie Massacre" that I watched the other night was entirely clean but then it was also scope so would not need the high bitrate of a 16:9 movie.

I just finished Europa Report; that was impressive. I see that it featured Michael Nyqvist, who played Mikael Blomkvist in the original Millennium trilogy (aka "Dragon Tattoo") Swedish miniseries. I also recognized the stunning woman who played Katya from somewhere; looking at her filmography I realized that it was from her six episodes on House, MD in which she portrayed Dominika, an illegal immigrant Ukrainian massage therapist whom House married to help her gain citizenship in return for her services cooking and cleaning.

Apparently its box office gross was $125K (if the info at IMDb is to be believed it was never on more than 10 screens nationwide); that can't have paid any significant portion of its production costs. It's been recently released to cable VOD, Google Play Movies, iTunes and now Netflix; it's also a full price rental on VUDU and Amazon Instant Video ($6 for HDX); hopefully they're making some cash now.

Also caught my eye were Sharlto Copley from District 9, and A-Team and Dan Fogler from Balls of Fury, Kung Fu Panda (among others).

As posted above I donated my ~$5.99 a couple of months ago - I think it was an iTunes rental (but could have been Vudu HDX).

It is hard to find movies that both my wife and early twenties sons will watch when they are home - but this was one of them.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is up, the first of that series and by far my favorite. It appears to be 720p-only at this time, but has DD+ 5.1 sound.

EDIT: I'm wrong--it's one of those strange titles which is 720p-only in the Win8 app and Silverlight player, SD-only in the HTML5 player and Super HD in all other platforms (except, of course, those which are hard-coded 720p only like the Xbox 360).

I keep seeing Sunshine come up in reviews of Europa Report. I think I'll dust off Sunshine and then try Europa Report.
Just finished Europa Report and it's easily 2001 level sci fi. Quite good for genre fans. It won't be for everybody though. No boobs, no blurry cgi cartoons, "no if it bleeds we can kill it", or space marines.

That interface I've been seeing for weeks. Maybe SF Bay Area folks were unwitting beta testers? I thought others here commented on an interface change a while back?
