Absolutely!

I figured that out long time ago, by preference of 1080i over 720 p in that debate

uh, no. Comcast. You must not be getting a good Netflix stream. I swear most people on here don't, because as videophile as I try to be, HD Netflix can look downright great at times.

Gotta go with b_scott here. The HD Netflix stuff looks better than my FiOS stations, for the most part. Some of that could be attributed to my local providers (my CBS in particular looks absolutely awful....I can barely stand watching it).

I prefer watching stuff on Netflix. Not only does it look better (in many cases) but there are no station logos or weather alerts or school closings or popups or messages telling me what I'm watching and what is coming up next or when something else is premiering. Quality aside, the clutter and constant annoyances they throw up on the screen have all but ruined broadcast TV for me.

Amen !

I can't tell the difference between netflix HD and cable HD. I prefer watching via netflix: no commercials to skip, no advertisement bugs that can't be skipped, etc.

For Halloween and Italian horror fans I watched "the New York Ripper" by Lucio Fulci and it is presented in HD (I was watching at 11 PM so it ran fine). I love 1970s and early 80s films and especially Italian horror. Of course even though shot in English always has the overdub or looped sound to it because Europeans seldom shot recording sound on the sets.

I've seen it and about everything else Neflix has WI of Argento and Fulci. Someday when I make it up to Seattle again I'm going to the public library downtown and look up the newspaper microfilm (or whatever they're using nowadays) for a movie that was a co-feature with "Carrie" circa 1977 at a downtown theater (possibly the Paramount). It was probably an Italian made film in English. Most of the audience laughed at it (as they probably would have with Argento and Fulci too) but it had some devices I hadn't seen used in horror film before. I haven't been able to figure it out through searches either.

"The Haunting of Winchester House" is one of these Asylum z-movies that some folks develop a taste for. As soon as I noticed it was an Asylum film I wondered how long I would actually watch it but I finished the thing. This film might be a good watch for directors of horror films that have no scare or creep factor. It's like the director focused on this like a study and there is a lot of creep factor. Looks more like a made for cable film and may have played on Syfy (in the middle of the night) since they do some of those Saturday films for Syfy (often some quite funny when they don't take themselves seriously). Presented in HD (and yes no drops).

Good super natural thriller. It would really benefit from 5.1 sound to make it more atmospheric. Kind of reminded me of The Others (not streamable).

I'll also recommend "The Church" a 1989 Michele Soavi horror film featuring a young Asia Argento.

For Bollywood fans "The Other Side of Bollywood" is a low-budget documentary I still found interesting and the Spanish director actually got some good interviews. It's not available WI yet and only on disc but I would bet they'll make more money WI.

Interesting they have it listed as being in Hindi since all interviews were in English.

The Girl Who Played With Fire .. part 2 of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy

Netflix had it the day of release on disk and stream ..

Perhaps not quite as good as The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but good none the less ..

I watched half of this last night, and I'm very pleased thus far. It is faster paced than its predecessor, but the plot is not nearly as tight. Nonetheless, Noomi somehow continues to beguile despite the fact I find just about everything about her character repugnant.

OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies I really enjoyed this spoof on spy movies. It is French, so subtitles are the order of the day, but I feel like I caught nearly all of the innuendos. The comedy is of the politically incorrect / culturally insensitive variety, and in places is actually insightful regarding Western / Near Eastern relations. (I know, I'm lumping Egypt in with the Near East - so sue me.) If you are like me and don't appreciate the slew of American comedies which seem based mostly around illicit drug abuse (the humor of which I mostly fail to comprehend), then this will be a breath of fresh air.

I find Noomi to be somehow a cross between vulnerable and tough as nails .. based on what we know of her backstory and history, repugnant would be the last on the list for me ..

one of my all time favorites, tho I haven't seen it in decades and not sure how it will hold up. Just checked and they are only streaming the trailer -- you have to get the disc for the full movie. It keeps dropping down my queue as I bump things up, so thanks for the reminder!

I'd add Black Sabbath to that as well .. IMO they have held up very well .. I still find the cinematography, story and B&W quality to just be excellent .. and how can you not like Barbara Steele ..

I forgot how fast they stream foreign films and ordered the disc ( still en route) which just serves as a reminder about how much I like streaming. I was hoping they'd stream the secret in their eyes quickly but so far, nada.

Re girl who played with fire, Salender didn't have as big a role in the second book so it'll be interesting to see how they adapted that for the movie. I'm enjoying book 3 more than 2 so I'm pretty sure dragon tattoo will be the best of the three movies. On Charlie rose the other night, noomi suggested the first was the most challenging and her favorite... If you haven't seen Dragon Tattoo yet, it's definitely worth seeing.

The only beef I had with the stream on Fire was it's subtitled .. I just don't care for subtitles .. Tattoo, on disc anyway, was dubbed English ..

I hope they do a dubbed version .. I'd watch it again and probably enjoy it more without the distraction of having to read it .. BTW, you get a little fooled into thinking it's dubbed at the start ..

oh, give yourself more credit than that. You're posting on an AVS forum on the net.

I think a lot of people half-watch the TV and do other things, which I can understand needing dubs for.

Yes, I'm just kidding, what ever way gives you the best chance at enjoying the film is the way you should do it, after all, that's the bottom line right?
I've actually found that focusing on the subtitles first eventually your eyes get used to reading them and then taking in the action. Shifting back and forth can be tiring. It's sort of like speed reading where you take in a paragraph at a time. I like original soundtracks as you get the better sound than the dubbed. However on a recent listened to commentary by George Romero he mentioned that many of the Italian horror films were dubbed even in Italian because they rarely recorded sound on the set.

I also watch "The Girl Who Played With Fire" last night. No drops on the HD stream. Would this movie made in English exactly the same way sell at all in the US? The film played at arthouses including the local one but they would probably feel they have to mess with it to dumb it down for American audiences as they do with Asian remakes for it to play the 'plexes.
