"El secreto de sus ojos" (The Secret in Their Eyes) - "Recently retired Benjamin (Darin), a former criminal-court employee, has decided to write a novel based on a rape and murder that occurred 20 years ago -- a crime he believes has never been solved.

"The story, set in 1999, is told in flashback form: in June 1974 a federal justice agent, BenjamÃ*n Espósito, becomes spellbound by and subsequently entangled in the investigation of the crime of a young woman, brutally raped and murdered inside her house in a Buenos Aires neighbourhood. Her widowed husband, bank employee Ricardo Morales, is shocked by the news; Espósito vows to find the killer and bring him to justice. In his ordeal he is aided by his alcoholic assistent Pablo Sandoval and a newcomer, the upper class lawyer Irene Menéndez-Hastings, who takes over as department chief."

What a wonderful, entertaining film "El secreto de sus ojos" is; superb cinematography, excellent performances and a great script result in a mesmerizing blend of tragedy, love, violence and humour.

Presented in an interwoven series of flashbacks which, from the opening scene, pull you into this perfectly paced and engaging mystery/thriller; the more than two hour runtime seems to fly by.

Ricardo DarÃ*n turns in fantastic performance as BenjamÃ*n Esposito, a Buenos Aires court employee.

Although Carla Quevedo's screen time as Liliana Coloto (the young girl who is raped and murdered) was limited, when she was on screen I could not take my eyes off of her.

Nominated for the 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language Film in 2010

Highly Recommended!

Excellent choice from Argentina.

I have been watching foreign film all my life, so sub-titles never bothered me. It's well worth the hours. A definite rental if not a keeper. The actor is very credible.

REALLY enjoyed this film!

Watched the BD and was completely dazzled.

Starts a little slow, but hang with it...you won't be sorry.

The cinematography is absolutely superb.
Beautifully shot film.

The writing is just about as good as it gets.
The "mystery" will keep you guessing all the way thru.
One of the finest films of the year....

Stunning, engaging, moving, rewarding film. Some of the best cinematography around, and that stadium shot is one of the best, ever. The 2 leads are flawless, as is the pacing. Superb film, highly recommended.

Chewbacco.. unfortunately Hollywood is skipping the note taking and instead is asking for the whole script. Yes, this film is yet another in the growing trend of being remade within 1-3 years of its release. They already have a director..

This is truly heartbreaking. I wonder if it's because you have to read!! ..
It doesn't need a remake, it a wonderful film on its own..too bad.

With DW in the lead, they are going to have to change the Argentinian backdrop to something else.
What to....I don't know.

Therein lies the problem..just leave it alone..but, since new ideas and creativity are not well received by the muckity-mucks, I'll wait for the dvd if then.

Remake of foreign films to our taste is called Hollywood Imperialism.

Watched this movie tonight and all I can say is....WOW!

Someone mentioned this movie in the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy BD thread and after reading about it on imdb I gave it a go.
Without a doubt one of the best movies I've seen in years and I'm really glad someone brought it to my attention.
