"El secreto de sus ojos" (The Secret in Their Eyes) - "Recently retired Benjamin (Darin), a former criminal-court employee, has decided to write a novel based on a rape and murder that occurred 20 years ago -- a crime he believes has never been solved.
"The story, set in 1999, is told in flashback form: in June 1974 a federal justice agent, BenjamÃ*n Espósito, becomes spellbound by and subsequently entangled in the investigation of the crime of a young woman, brutally raped and murdered inside her house in a Buenos Aires neighbourhood. Her widowed husband, bank employee Ricardo Morales, is shocked by the news; Espósito vows to find the killer and bring him to justice. In his ordeal he is aided by his alcoholic assistent Pablo Sandoval and a newcomer, the upper class lawyer Irene Menéndez-Hastings, who takes over as department chief."
What a wonderful, entertaining film "El secreto de sus ojos" is; superb cinematography, excellent performances and a great script result in a mesmerizing blend of tragedy, love, violence and humour.
Presented in an interwoven series of flashbacks which, from the opening scene, pull you into this perfectly paced and engaging mystery/thriller; the more than two hour runtime seems to fly by.
Ricardo DarÃ*n turns in fantastic performance as BenjamÃ*n Esposito, a Buenos Aires court employee.
Although Carla Quevedo's screen time as Liliana Coloto (the young girl who is raped and murdered) was limited, when she was on screen I could not take my eyes off of her.
Nominated for the 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language Film in 2010
Highly Recommended!
