Which to get for HTPC? Ati HD 5450 or 5570

Thread Starter
I know there is a lot of new things coming out and companies are finally starting to offer bit-streaming . That being said I know it is in its infancy still but with the release of the 5xxx series ATI cards I have been pretty antsy to build a new HTPC. I have been running a popcorn hour A-110 for over a year and although it has its minor drawbacks, it plays blu ray like a champ for me.

All that aside. I am putting together a new build with HTPC in mind only. I already have gaming PCs and purchased the Zotac GF9300 board with the silverstone mini-ITX case. My question is what card would be the best in the long run? I have read all the reviews on the 5450 and 5570 and know they still have deinterlacing issues and what not but figure at least they can bit-stream and maybe it will get better.

So tell me what you think. I know that many people don't have them yet, but I would like to get one soon and figure they will get better over time, but which one will be best over time? Tell me what you would get or not get and why. I am keeping it to these two cards mainly because of power and heat concerns. I want this to be as low profile as possible.

I mainly play blu rays and have it hooked up to a Pioneer VSX-1019. I also have an antenna up that I watch all the major network channels with.

I would recommend the 5670. I have one already and just ordered another (canceled my 5450 after reading reviews). Assuming you need a low profile card based on your mini-itx build I would probably choose the 5450 over the 5570 as right now it appears you will pay $20+ for the 5570 with no benefits and the same issues.

I am just setting up a new HTPC build and got a MSI 5450. I played back a little of the blu-ray "300" last night and it looked good from my view. I haven't played blu-rays at home yet so I don't have anything to compare other than cable and OTA HD broadcasts.

I would like to eventually upgrade to a silent 5670 but they don't exist yet.

What do you mean by silent, passive cooled? The Sapphire 5670 I cannot hear. I just got the HIS as well, of which many people say is silent as well.

I have the HIS 5670 and could not hear any noise increase when adding it to my HTPC. I was previously using the passively cooled Geforce 8300 IGP.

I have the XFX 5670 which is inauduble in my system and has the added benefit of being single slot.

the Sapphire 5670 makes a high pitch noise that I can't stand,
I replaced the fan with the old and trusty Zalman VF900.

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 desktop case so I am limited to what full-size cards I can put in. I can't put any double-slot cards in and any card with a fan would be installed upside-down due to the way the PCI slot cage is oriented.

Ideally, I would like a 5670 with a Zalman fanless cooler like: http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-450.shtml

Really, I have no issues. I have an extra Zalman that I was ready to use to replace the stock cooler but was surprised at how quiet. Still have the alman handy incase things take a turn for the worse!

I'd see how the 5550 tests. They are popping up today in Europe and on some manufacturer sites like Powercolor now.

It should have a power boost over the 5450 but run cooler than the 5570 so that fanless versions will be practical. It's DDR2 but that shouldn't make much of a difference for HTPC applications.

Another vote for the HIS HD5670.

I'm currently testing a 5450 in an HTPC and I am seriously impressed with it. Of course I do no gaming at all.

Since I replaced my old 3650, my system temperature has dropped 12C at load! Being fanless, the noise has declined as well (the sapphire 3650 had one of the most annoying fans I ever heard).

The new options for vector adaptive deinterlacing, edge enhancement, video output levels, dynamic contrast and gamma etc all work great and deliver a massive improvement over the UVD 1.0 capabilities of the 3650. Blurays work wonderfully with hardware acceleration too.

By the way the de-interlacing issues only apply to resolutions above 1920x1200 so unless you're plugging your HTPC into a 27"+ monitor you have nothing to worry about. HDTV's are fine. I think the 5450 will peak out at 1080i deinterlacing and have no GPU capacity left for post-processing so if that's important to you, go for the 5570.
