VIZIO INTERNET APPS (VIA) Enabled LCD's Thread - Page 20

OK, so I just wanted to give any folks also having trouble with FLINGO a "heads up" so they don't go thru what I just went thru. After noting somebody in the 554 thread talking about using "Flingo to watch YouTube" my jaw dropped. Really? No more waiting? Yep, really! It's not Vizio but at least SOMEBODY came to the table.

#1.) *I* could not get Flingo to work properly with IE8. Try as I might, it just wasn't happening. You were supposed to just right-click & add the "fling" favorite to your favorites folder, but it no workee.

#2.) After gnashing of teeth, I noticed all instructions were using Google Chrome. Voila!! Success!! All works as easily as you see it on the video. If you want to play with Flingo, just download Google Chrome & be done with it.

Now I ask you..........Why can't Flingo just put that on the website? In their forum? On the fine print you get when IE8 fails? WTF is the matter with people making such neat stuff, only to fail so miserably on the most basic of communication skills as to forget that the MOST WIDELY USED BROWSER ON THE PLANET DOES NOT SUPPORT THEIR PRODUCT??????

(Insert smiley smashing Ferrari Enzo windshield with a baseball bat here)

Sad that Vizio can't simply get an app going, but still neat that it can be so easily done with Flingo.......(well, once you figure out for yourself how to do it)
Only problem with Flingo is once you play something, it gets deleted. It'd be nice to be able to store favorites there forever and delete them manually if you want.
Yes, that too!! I haven't played enough yet but wondering if there's a way to save them in that "favorites" option???

For any fellow fans of SEC college sports out there, check out the logos on the lower half of page at this link below. Not expecting any live games, of course. Would be pretty sweet if we got highlights and game replays, though.

Nope, I don't think so. Notice the big GoogleTV logo on top of all that stuff. Vizio's new TVs seem to have GoogleTV on them instead of Yahoo now. I wouldn't be surprised if we dont see any more support at all from Vizio on new apps.

Maybe I'm hopeful, but if it was completely Google-centric we wouldn't see Boxee and Roku on there. We just got a bunch of new apps this month. I don't think Vizio would stop adding Yahoo Connected TV apps as third-parties create them. At least I hope not.

The XVT32SV was going to be my purchase for a smaller room where we want to use it for mostly Netflix and other netcast providers. However, the lack of closed captioning support has held me back from the purchase. Now that Netflix is making strides to improve their support of closed captioning (my iPad supports it) and the far-worse TV choice (the Sony NSX-series Google TV models) supports it, the question is when will Vizio offer support of this invaluable feature (I watch just about every DVD with English subtitles on, especially those with non-US English accents like that of the Brits)? Anybody's guess about this (and if they will offer it as a firmware upgrade to the XVT series or will they only support it on future products)?

Is there a way to watch Vimeo videos not in the (very small) list of pre-selected clips?

Hi, I'm new here!

Got me a Vizio XVT553 a couple weeks ago. My, giant box, 11 year old, Mitsubishi 55" HD rear projection set convergence chip finally bit the dust. It served me well, but it was time to upgrade.

I'm very happy with the 553. Looked at the 554, but I'm almost blind in one eye, so 3D doesn't do anything for me. IMHO, the 553 is an outstanding TV, and great computer monitor!

I've been a hard core nerd for 43 years. Got started on the IBM System/360 mainframe. I still spend most of my time today working with a big IBM z, but I've also been messing with small computers since the 6502, aka before the first IBM PC. I suppose I'm almost an "expert" on the x86 these days. I'm a former net admin, I joke that I was a CNE before Novell invented the term. Computers have been both my job, and my #1 hobby for my entire adult life.

So I'm wondering, why doesn't Vizio have a VIA Widget for general "web browsing"? I can't think of any technical reason. Surfing is pretty basic these days. There are several "lite weight" programs available, I mean we're down to the smart phone level.

Can we expect a "VIA Browser" any time soon, or is there "some other reason" why not...

.

I can't imagine why they would. The trend in web browsing devices is getting smaller, not larger. Tablets, netbooks, phones etc. IMO most would pass on an app like this if it were available.

Besides, I can't imagine trying to browse the web using the Vizio remote....that would be frustrating to say the least.

A USB Keyboard would solve that. Many of the media players out there can use them. But personally, I don't think I would use it much. I still prefer my PC and 24" monitor.

Unfortunately general "web browsing" does not exist. Think of all of the plugins that you download for web videos alone. You need an operating system, processor and memory robust enough to handle them. Displaying a quality image on a 55" screen is far more difficult then on a 4" PDA. There are all of the issues of being able to maintain compatibility over the lifetime of the TV. Current TV's are updated (firmware and apps) infrequently. Can you imagine the number of updates that have to be validated an applied just for a web browser? Today I have a Java, shockwave and flash updates pending on my PC (no Flash update on my IPhone (LOL)).
Apps or Widgets, by design, are usually single purpose and targeted. This allows them to be isolated from the operating system. Web browsers are multipurpose and heavily integrated.

BTW I had a DISH network STB with a web browser that lasted a few months before Microsoft gave up on it and an RCA DLP that you could not navigate off the home page without a problem.

Good point about plugins. But I think "general surfing" does exist. Take any browser "out of the box", and it works just fine. Sure, you won't get the fancy flash vids, and you won't be able to run Java, but you can "surf". Heck, many of us run Firefox with NoScript, so we don't do any Flash or Java for most sites anyway.

"Basic browsing" really isn't all that complex. Look at Firefox, sure, today 4.0 has become bloated, like most maturing software. But things like Firefox 1.0 were very "lite weight" programs.

Seems to me we've already got it. VIA Netflix etc. works pretty well.

This isn't a big deal, I've got more computers around here than I can count. And I am using the XVT VGA port (on it now with PIP). Crank up the font size etc, and it looks pretty good at 1920x1080.

But a VIA browsser just seems "so obvious" to me. Most of the "parts" seem to already be in place...

I often hang out at tech sites like a Yahoo Group, or a vBulletin forum, just like this one. It would be kool if I could "check the front page" via VIA, instead of having to wake up the whole 'puter...

We do have a bunch of Yahoo apps already, maybe they'll add Groups. The WWW one step at a time, perhaps?

Later.

You and I are from the "green screen" era and our expectations are a lot lower then the the target demographics for a feature rich TV. The average buyer will expect the full web experience from a web browser no matter how you qualify it. As I stated; the apps (Netflix) are dedicated and directly access the Vizio video engine. You can't re-size, window, switch to another app or do anything else while it is running.

When you connect your PC, the TV is nothing more then a monitor. If you are displaying a 1920x1080 @ 60 fps you have a fairly decent cpu and video, far better then what is in the TV.

Anyone can download the open source Yahoo SDK for most of the Vizio sets. All it takes is time and desire to write your own app. It may be relatively easy to read the Yahoo groups but posting a message will be another story.

I have a 10" netbook (and bifocals) on all of the time for the quick surf and E-Mail. I am happier with that then having to bring up a browser on the TV.

I think true PC's or tablets are replacing TV's smaller the 25". We are not far away from having streamed video as being our primary source and at that time the TV will truly be replaced with with a PC with full web and gesture capabilities

BTW did all of the 360 people share one blue suit or did IBM write a spec?

The Netflix app for the Yahoo-enabled TV's needs fixing, because it appears to have a 100 episode limit. Ever since Netflix started combining multi-season shows into one listing, the app doesn't list all the episodes, if there are more than 100.

Netflix app now gone? Anyone know what happened?

I just installed in from the Widget Gallery.
Just reinstalled it as well. Odd, seems to have disappeared on its own and I had to put it back on. Hopefully it was some kind of update.
Has anyone checked out the Widget Gallery? I went from 9 pages of Widgets to 1 1/2 pages. What's going on here.

Never Mind, I had it Feature Apps not All Apps.
I had to run home to my other house for the weekend and I have the 553 there. The Netflix app didn't dissappear on that set but I noticed that it does have a later version of Netflix on it. It shows a lot more movies on the preview screen and the layout it different.

I wonder why they don't update the 554. It's much easier finding movies on the newer version.

Does anyone know if this is just an app update or would this come in with a FW update.

My 554 still has the original FW on it since I got it. XP1.21.2.1. Has anyone recieved an update higher that this. I heard that later sets being sold had a higher FW on them.

Just got a XVT3D474SV.

Everything that is there works fine, but I am missing some apps. Most important, Hulu Plus and Blockbuster.

I'm running Yahoo Widget Gallery 1.3.22
And firmware version VIZIO_XP1.28.0.2

Hulu and Blockbuster are no where to be found. Please help!

I don't have one, but I read in several places that you need to let the TV update its firmware. It updates automatically when it is turned off, but may take a little while.

My 554 doesn't have Hulu or Blockbuster. Are you sure they are supposed to have them. I don't remeber ever seeing them. I'm not sure if my 553 has them, it's at my other house but don't remember seeing them on there either. The only app I use is Netflix but that will be ending soon with their new pricing policy.
My 553 has those, but I don't use Blockbuster since they can't deliver movies in 5.1 sound- Vudu does. I tried Hulu and immediately cancelled it because all the current TV shows have network logos overlayed on the screen (if you use Hulu Desktop on a computer, they aren't there) and I refuse to pay for commercials as well- Hulu runs a ton of them.

Isn't that the truth. I am so sick of these channels putting overlays on the screen. I was watching a movie on Showtime the other day and they did it. It had an ad of an upcoming movie. If these pay channels start it i'm cancelling them too.

I don't know why the 554 hasn't been updated, it even has the old style Netflix on it. The FW hasn't been updated yet, it still has the original FW on it since the set came out.

Okay... so according to complaints (and replies from Vizio reps) on Vizio's facebook page, none of their 3d models have received updates/new apps, to include Hulu, Blockbuster, Etc.

link

No ETA on new apps for 3d tvs, according to update from last week. And today they promised a youtube app by end of summer on ALL VIA tvs to include 3d models...

I wouldn't hold your breath on that. Vizio has promised for the past 3 model years to activate the usb ports for Video and Audio playback. 2 Years ago they said something great was coming, well we are still waiting to see what it is.

I like Vizio TVs and have quite a few of them but I use a Media Player (PopcornHour) for all my media playback so the USB ports aren't important to me. However, I know they are for many.

They have also been promising a FW update for the Random Reboots. I wonder when/if that will come. It's been 2 models now. What if it never comes, people are stuck with these sets.

I recommend Vizio to friends but tell them that if Media Playback is important to them and it doesn't support it when you buy the set then don't buy it and expect it on a FW upgrade. Once you are beyond the return period you are screwed.

I think Vizio needs to step up and start making good on their promises and not drop support on a TV shortly after launch.

I decided I'm going to return this set (XVT3D474SV) and get a panasonic plasma. The 2d picture quality is great, but the 3d is complete garbage. HORRIBLE ghosting/crosstalk. I paid "extra" for the 3d version of this TV... only to find out it has less features (missing VIA apps) and a 3d mode I will NEVER use. I would still recommend this set for a 2d monitor, its a great bargain, but not what I'm looking for
