Sony SXRD Past & Present Owner's Poll

Thread Starter
Hi. I'm a long time reader here. I have used AVSFORUM to help me make all of my Audio Video decisions. I would like to start a Stats Poll on the Sony SXRD line so that some of us could go to one place to tally the obivious OB problems with the various models. Perhaps it could help all of us in fighting with Sony if necessary or our attorney's if we choose to go that route.

1. Model #: XBR2 70"

2. Build Date & Software Version: January 2007 SP3

3. Date Purchased: 08/06/07

4. How Many Hours on Set: 7720

5. How Many Bulb Changes & Brand: 1; XL-5300 supplied by Sony

6. How Many OB Replacements: 0

7. Date Ext Wtty Expires if applicable: 08/06/11 with BB

8. Location and Environment: USA, FL 1 story home; AC kept 74

Thank you if you choose to participate. Please just leave a post of 1 thru 7 with your answers and any additional comments you have. I love my XBR2 70". I can not find any other set I like as well for the money. I will hate to lose the 70" screen.

Great Idea. I will add mine soon once I get the build date of the back of TV.

One suggestion, in your first post maybe link to the post that shows how to determine the hours, this way people who don't know will be more inclined to post and then include this info.

Short version below (Full version):
1. With the set OFF, grab your remote and enter the following within 1 sec of the previous button:
2. DISPLAY - 5 - VOLUME DOWN - TV POWER
3. You'll see a screen overlay. Last 5 digits on the bottom right is the bulb hours.
4. Hit POWER again to EXIT this mode and shut off the set.

Is this thread for LCD, RP, FP? If so you might want folks to specify this. While it could be determined by model, it would be easier just to have this compiled here.

Also it would be great if folks could list the replacement bulbs they used - brand (osram, philips), online site purchase from, hours on tv that replacement occurred, and any issues with bulb. This way we can also see from this tally what the best bulbs are as I know a batch coming from somewhere is having flickering issues.

And since heat seems to play an issue, maybe Location and environment description.

Examples:
USA, IL, 2 story home on lower level, AC kept low around 68, winters cold
USA, TX, 1 level home TV in basement, AC kept medium, basement always cool
USA, FL, 1 level home TV, AC kept around 75

dm145....Some models of SXRD's do not have class action suits filed yet. They are newer models and do not have the hours on the set, but they soon will.

Also, the suit is pending if I read correctly on the XBR2's.

Hello,
1. Model KDS-55A3000

2. Build Date & Software Version: August 2007 (Cnet Update)

3. Date Purchased: 07/24/08

4. How Many Hours on Set: 11,000 (BB Floor Model)

5. How Many Bulb Changes & Brand: 2 (Sony XL-5200) I sweet talked Sony into sending me 2 free bulbs. One after the warranty lapsed. I have never had a bulb go out, I just wanted the newest bulb possible. I still have 1 Replacement Bulb available from my BB PSP.

6. How Many OB Replacements: 1 (2/15/10)

7. Date Ext Wtty Expires if applicable: 07/24/11 with BB

8. Location and Environment: USA, FL 1 story home; AC kept 72

I was shocked that my OB failed as the A3000's have seemed less prone to OB failures, but since the replacement it looks better than it ever has.

Thank you. I just got my OB replaced today on my Sony SXRD (50"). I bought it in December of 2006. Also I have replaced the bulb/lamp once over a year ago.

Note to all: My repair man said the one main cause of the OB going bad is because of heat. He has replaced many of them because of this. He stated that dust build up will cause it to over heat and anyone who owns this type of set should take off the plastic back plate and vacum it to get all of the dust out at least once a year. He has the same set I have (60" though) and has never had a problem because he vacums the dust out of the vent and fans.

Hello,
Marine Cop, good advice about vacuuming the rear panel. Today, I called BB Extended Warranty Dept and got another XL-5200 mailed out.

I did this just in case the bulbs become scarce in the future. I just replaced my bulb 3 months ago thanks to the kindness of Sony giving me one for free 3 Months after my Warranty lapsed. The one that had been in it had been replaced within a week of purchase due to buying a Store Display.

Very stoked that I managed to get two free bulbs and a free Remote Control (BB gave me a Remote from another Model) from Sony since purchasing in June 2008. And I guess (unfortunately) an Optical Block too.

So now, I will have 3 XL-5200's. One with 5 thousand hours, one with 2 thousand hours (current one) , and a Brand New XL-5200.
Cheers,
AD

1. Model #: KDS-60A2000

2. Build Date & Software Version: January 2007 SP3

3. Date Purchased: 03/03/07

4. How Many Hours on Set: a mere 2000!!!

5. How Many Bulb Changes & Brand: 1; XL-5200 supplied by Vann's

6. How Many OB Replacements: 0

7. Date Ext Wtty Expires if applicable: n/a

8. Location and Environment: USA, Illinois, set diagonally in our walk-out basement family room, temps kept around 70 deg.

Replaced lamp upon Sony's suggestion when TV began to shut itself off, then restart on its own back in Dec. 2009. Lamp made no difference, but kept it in anyway. TV showed error code that neither Sears nor Sony is sure what it means. Replaced 2 circuit boards (A1 and QM). Presently waiting to try a 3rd A1 circuit board, believed to be the one to fire up the lamp. TV has been unoperational since we turned it on to watch the Super Bowl. No OB issues as yet.

Model SXRD55A200

Build Date :UNK

Purchased 07/2006

Hours on set I would guess 8000 or so

Bulb replaced 3X

OB replaced 5X

Extended Warrantee exp 07/09

Location main TV in Family Room

Sony never admitted any issues with the TV even though the OB was replaced over and over again but a Sony certified repair tech. Finally ABT Electronics took the TV back and sold me a Samsung UN55B6000 for $1060 out the door last summer and took the Sony back. Then 2 weeks later Sony called offering to replace the set. Filed with the BBB and the Attorney General's Office but Sony never replied.

This TV and my PS3 are the worst pieces of electronics I have ever owned.

Where are you getting 65" from?

These are all 50" and 60" TVs. The measurement is in the model name...
  • KDS-50A2000
  • KDS-60A2000
  • KDS-60A3000

50" and 60" are the measurements of the screen. The A3000 and A2000 are the series.

Don't exaggerate.

I own the KDS-60A3000 myself and I'm listed further up on this page.

Going throught the process of getting the replacement TV. Opted for the 55EX710 for $425+ tax. Getting all the information mailed to them in 1 week is a pain. Three different sale reps told me 3 different ways of taking the picture. Got all the stuff ready, then I got the e-mail on how to do it. But I already did it with the ref# on top instead of on the bottom of the tv. I hope they don't complain. I think Sony needs to train their employee's better.

Well my TV died out again. This time it is once again the lamp. This will be my 3rd lamp replacement since 2006. Thank god it is not the OB again. I don't understand, the TV is watched maybe 3 hours a day and some time less. Overall this 50" SXRD has cost me over $3,500.00 since I bought it with all of the repairs over the years. This TV is just a non-stop money pit in the long run. I am poor right now though so I am stuck with it. Any advice on where to get a cheap lamp for it?
