Is there another tool? my projector shows as DVI, is that the problem?

hmm, extension flag is 0 so that Optoma definitely does not have an extension block (sorry about that, I should have checked before). But worse, I see no 16:9 or HD available resolution. Just googled and according to
this site the projector has these specs:
Specifications. 2300 ANSI lumens, 2000:1 contrast, native 4:3 full-frame
1024x768 XGA DLP chip with a 2x rotation speed, 5-segment color wheel.
So this is your issue, as no HD resolution means NO HD audio (HDMI 1.3a).
Now, there's a secondary video descriptor with 1080i timings, so I've put it first so that it gets precedence and added the extension block of the Onkyo 705. Maybe it works.
It it doesn't work your best bet is a Gefen Detective Plus connected to the Onkyo -> ATI HDMI chain, with the Optoma connected to the other HDMI ATI port (you'll need a native ATI DVI-HDMI adapter). The Gefen would be a "dummy' HD video device of course.
The Asus HDAV1.3 would be another choice (see tusharj posts in previous pages for details).
