It seems like a black version is available for the EX700

Is the NX series 10-bit?
How about the EX?

Sony specifications don't say anything about the bit processing anymore. Weird.
I believe that both the EX and NX panels are 8 Bit.

There is no pip on the ex700. I do believe it has the same feature though for splitting between a PC input like the ex500.
Thanks. Wow that completely sucks.

Can anyone say which Sony models (last year or this) actually have the traditional Sony PIP? By this I mean the following attributes:

a) it's actually twin view, where the pics are next to each other as opposed to one on top of the other;

b) at least one of the pics can be component (or better yet hdmi) and show HD;

c) you can adjust the sizes (same size or one is big and the other tiny).

It just seems so ridiculous to me that now that all the TVs are so big there's no PIP anymore.
PIP must be an expensive feature as in the last 3 years competition on TV price's is at its fullest and manufacturers are dumping the PIP feature.

That stinks.. with the price range of the NX series ($1500+) one would expect it to be a 10-bit panel. In addition to banding removal, there is a noticeable difference between 8-bit and 10-bit panels when viewing any source that has to be rescaled up (480p, 720p, 1080i), since you can divide into the 10-bit more precisely without rounding. Broadcast 1080i which has to be de-interlaced looks much better on 10-bit panels than on 8-bits.

I guess the only 10-bits are LX and HX?

Tell me about it... It's like the split-screen on video games too. They are so much more fun and social than LAN since friends or family are playing together in the same room. Lots of hilarity. But now that screens are finally big enough to play comfortably, strangely fewer and fewer games are offering split-screen multiplayer modes.

I called Sony support and they told me the ex700 was a 10 bit panel

Interesting...They told me 8 Bit

Yep...you just can't buy it at most stores. It's the "house" model for Costco, BestBuy, etc.

Here in Canada, Futureshop has it as the EX703.

doesn't surprise me one bit - I wish someone would take apart their set and tell us all the technical specs of the panel inside!

Yeah I don't think that's gonna happen
yea it has happened many times before by members on this forum and several review sites

Ha got one. 52ex701. I turned down the 60, I have a projo in the same room so 52 is plenty. I will have many pictures later tonight. No sliver bar this one is black.

I saw this one at Costco yesterday and actually preferred the bezel over the 700 at Best Buy. The Best Buy 700 model had a gun-metal looking gray strip below the screen as part of the frame where at Costco the whole frame was black, including the bottom which blended in better IMHO. Still considering the 60" version. Good luck with the set and please give us your feedback once you play with it for awhile!

Ok out of the box I see some nice deep blacks. Upscaling old video was a little wonky. I could see some jaggies but nothing too bad. I tried one over the cable digital channel, ABC I think. I don't know what resolution they broadcast at but it looked nice to me. I have nothing to compare it too my last TV did not get those channels.

The screen is definitely semi matte, I can just make out some slight reflections. Overall I would say better picture than my XB1 but I need to play with it more. Perfectly acceptable but I have to admit I am not NEARLY as picky as some of the guys on here.

I also tried out some XDcam footage. I have a PMW-EX3. Full HD professional video camera. VERY nice. I could see a lot more detail and the color looks better than my XBR1. The pictures below are showing a XDcam clip.

As a matter of fact, using that same camera I will be posting a 1080p youtube demo of the TV. Maybe tomorrow. The youtube feature is kinda cool but since my computer is hooked up to the TV it is useless for me.

excellent pics. Convinced to me get one too. 52ex700

I've been checking this tv out in my local Yodobashi Camera store in Yokohama and I love how it looks.

I can get the 40" EX700 for about 103,000yen (about ($1,160), how does that compare with prices in the U.S. or Europe?

I had been trying to decide between this TV and the Viera G2 42", but having seen some pretty bad I.R. in the 2009 Viera V1 (I could actually read the product details and price for something which had been displayed on a shopping channel sometime earlier that day), it swung my choice towards the Bravia. (well, that and a nagging missus, lol) Both the 40" EX700 and the 42" Bravia G2 can be had for exactly the same price here in Yokohama.

Are there any proper reviews out yet?

I read one at the link posted earlier in this thread, but would never base my final purchase on one review, especially from a source I've never heard of before.

This TV looks real nice in the store, both in terms of design and picture quality.

would you say you are pretty pleased with the PQ? How is it hooked up to a PC? Is text pretty sharp or REALLY sharp? I am coming from a kds-60a2000 (similar to your XBR1)

by the way, I love the ending of your demo on youtube. awesome.

That's a pretty sweet room! Do you have pictures of the rest of the room? My gf is obsessed with Alien, she thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Metalalien...How much adjusting did you do to the "out of box" settings before you made the video?
Metalalien thanks for that video and the pictures. The off-angle view that you showed looked pretty good without much of a reduction in picture quality. Do you find the off-angle viewing acceptable?

It looks like its in torch mode
Text looks more solid than my XBR1, still not as good as a true monitor but definitely better. I had both sets hooked up the same way. DVI to HDMI adapter. This set does let me run at a higher refresh rate than the XBR1 and you can tell. Very smooth scrolling.

There are some old pictures of the media room before and after it was painted black in the AVS archive. We use to get galleries.

Out of the box it asks you if this is for a home or showroom, I selected home so I don't think it is in torch mode. I just fiddled with the contrast and brightness a little before making the video. I will continue to play with it. The XDcam video looks markedly better on this set than my XBR1. The harshness of the youtube video could be because of the XDcam, it is very sensitive.

Overall I would say this is easily better than my XBR1. I have just been watching some DVDs and that motion flow 120hz stuff is amazing! Makes old movies you've seen a 1000 times look like they are suddenly 60fps video.

Yes I am very happy with the picture, I like this TV.

EDIT: oh and off angle looks fine to me. Plenty wide enough viewing area for me.
