FYI: the Samsung B650 PDP does have PIP.

First of all, the figure is 0.08, not 0.008, and 0.11 not 0.011. They gave the measurements in candelas, not ftL. The figure did not sound right, so I checked, and their measurements were done with local dimming off. With the "Smart LED" local-dimming engaged (which everyone uses), the Samsung B8500 measured 0.02 cd/m2, which is approx 0.0058 ftL or about 8G Kuro levels.

Setting "Auto Contrast Enhancer" to "off" should do the trick.

anyone think the 60" will fit inside a minivan or SUV?

i took home the 60" in a honda crv...i put the back seats down and slid it in flat for a 10 min soft slow ride...no ill effects....i believe the box is 39" wide and 60"long...it's a nicely packaged box and i'd have been more concerned if it was a plasma or an lcd with a heavy glass front...the weight is favorable also at 60lbs without the stand...i use a peerless sf660 wall mount...works nicely


i feel that the combination of a "good" picture,price,size and 3yr included warranty is an excellent value for this type of tv

I had the box measured at a Sony Store. It's a little under 40 inches high. That will certainly stand up in any normal minivan, but may need to be tilted to get in which is no big deal. I anticipate no problems with my 2008 Grand Caravan.

You're talking about the LCD, not the Plasma, right? Per the Samsung website the PNxxB650 doesn't have PIP, but the LN does.

fyi---i rented out some streaming video (standard movies,so far) from amazon..

works seamlessly. starts quickly and no buffering or any type of interruptions

Nice video! Is the camera making the picture have such a blue tint to it or do you like your color temp cool?

How is screen uniformity? I returned my Samsung 55B7000 edge lit LCD because it was terrible. You could see areas of the back light that were lighter and darker around the edges.

Alas..The EX700 series does indeed have some backlight bleed. The array is located on top and bottom on these sets and during bright white scenes, you can clearly see the LED's. It's the nature of the beast. There is also some flashlighting in the corners.

I saw a bunch of new CCFL Sony panels yesterday at BB in Rochester, MI but could not locate any LED versions - new Samsungs weren't in yet. Pardon me if I don't reference a the code number panels as it's become a pain trying to recall this new alpha/numeric system.

I saw two 60" panels and the cheaper one actually looked better than the higher end being sold at MSRP of $2499 and $2999 but I'd attribute that to poor calibration by the jockeys that placed them on the walls and no remotes to be found. All the CCFL's with the exception of one were identified as 150K:1 Dynamic contrast ratio by BB - the more expensive Sony 60" had no CR listed.

Saw some smaller units and they all seemed to have the dark gray bottom panel.

They all looked very good and the blacks were quite good for CCFL's but I'm holding out for an LED version and I prefer bigger than 60". It's amazing how small 60" panels look when up on those walls because you know they seem huge when you take them home but I need more than 3" increase over my current panel to be worthy of an upgrade after waiting nearly 4 years.

I think many people will be happy with these but BB audition material isn't all that great to actually judge the experience. Good Luck guys!

That's disappointing considering my EX400 (lowest of low-end) doesn't have any corner flashlighting, even when backlight is at 9. Looks like it's still a luck of draw with flashlighting and clouding.

The blue is from the camera. The color temp of a TV and normal indoor lighting is not the same so either one is right or the other. I guess I should have adjusted for the TV.

My screen is more than acceptable. On a pure color screen you can see some very mild areas of brightness but while watching a movie or TV it is a non issue.

FYI, cnet has their review for the NX800 posted. It should have at least a little better PQ than the EX700 (but I'm betting they are pretty similar)

The NX800 uses the same panel and LED backlight array as the EX 700 series.

Cnet generally gives 4+ star reviews only to plasmas. I wonder how many poor saps bought plasmas with "infinite blacks" based on Cnet's reviews only to have the blacks after 600 hours look worse than a 5 year old Acer monitor. Cnet does a huge disservice to consumers by using these jacked up plasmas as benchmarks for other TVs.

Those Panasonic plasmas were rated Editor's Choice by Cnet with 4.5+ stars. Little did consumers know that their "fantastic picture quality" lasts less than a year and will steadily deteriorate, the blacks looking grey and purple. Panasonic has responded that they would do nothing about it. Knowing this now, does Cnet change their inflated ratings for the plasmas? Nope. What a bunch of crooks.

one thing i noticed that is interesting to me, I noticed in one of MetalAlien's close up photo's of his EX701 that the pixel structure is very abnormal looking for an LCD, Could you get a closer macro shot of the pixel structure for those who are curious like myself?

the one i looked at in frys appeared to have a staggered sub pixel layout rather than in line like every LCD that has ever been made is, unless S-LCD made some major changes to the S-PVA design i have a feeling this model may be using the new quad color Sharp panels with UV2A, it would explain why the pixels are staggered like a normal shadow mask CRT pixel structure perhaps

just for an example for those who do not understand what i'm talking about heres why a normal non-trinitron CRT looks like at the pixel level

thanks, i see why i thought that though, that panel is not a PVA or MVA design i've ever seen before, i still think it may be Sharps new panel's

the sub pixels in VA LCD's start to brighten at the center and then move outward from the center as they get brighter, the ones in your photo appear to be starting in the top left corner when they are dim, never seen that on an LCD before

That was with the camera pressed against the TV... that is as close as I can get it. They definitely have four subpixel thingies, they are not the slanted sub pixels of the older panel you posted.

Here I took another picture and tried to get better focus. You can clearly see the four quads of each pixel and how they dim one quad at a time. Looks exactly like the new panel example you posted if you ask me.

yeah looks better, definately not an S-PVA panel unless they made some major changes but it does match UV2A aka Sharp X-Gen panel sub pixel layout, very cool

how are the black levels (without autodimming turned on) and viewing angles on it?

when I look at something like XDcam footage using HDMI it blows my old XBR1 away. Looks like a window. the other night I was checking out Alien using that motionflow tech (which I love BTW) When I left the room and cam back I did notice a little off angle browning of the borders above and below the picture but only because you guys were asking me to check. I would never have spotted that before.

I have zero complaints about the image. My two minors complaints about the TV are the lack of a true matte screen although this one is certainly good enough, and the menu reacts slow. My old XBR1 was very speedy in selections and favorites.

...and I'd still trade all the internet crap for good old PIP.

Something else on the black level. When watching 4.3 images and you can even see this in the video I posted. The borders go to nearly true black. Super black. Way darker than the XBR1.

EDIT: rocketjoe the full pixel settings are in the home menu under picture & display. Very cool if you want to run a computer to the TV using component.

sounds pretty good, its hard to judge viewing angles and black levels in a store but the EX700 i saw today did look very good for an LCD

good to see sony's bringing their A game this year because last year was a disappointment and S-PVA panels had some major problems with screen uniformity but were otherwise pretty good in every other respect outside of gaming performance but i won't get into that unless you want me to
