SVS Sealed Subs... - Page 21

Looks like the SB12nsd may have some stiff competition:

What do you guys think?

It looks better than the revised specs for the SB12 and is $50 cheaper. It is 9lbs heavier and extends a tad lower. We'll see! Their Ultra line was well received based on feedbacks here. I love competition.

the new emo looks good, spec wise, it's got lots of the dsp features that the more expensive sledge amps have, more power, and cheaper price.
That looks very nice. It could be the value leader in the compact sub department. Of course it will depend on how it sounds and tests, but I'd bet on it performing well. SVS should be concerned.

I would still bet that the Epik Legend smoke both of them.

And yet I'd still buy SVS for the customer support. Heck, I've got 5 e-mails from Ed just today to troubleshoot a setup problem (Audyssey is being a POS).

+1

I have received 5 E-mails from SVS regarding an issue as well. This all took place on a Sunday which is great . Also while the Legend may outperform the Emo Ref X 12, I don't see it smoking it. Also the SVS Sledge 400 has been rock solid with everything I've thrown at it. With twice the power and DSP features, this (Emo 12) may indeed be the go to sub in its price range...

And I LOVE my twin SB12nsd subs!

Actually, I think the Legend is a step above both. Also, all of us don't need our hands held when setting up our subs.

No one said anything about SVS holding our hands during setup of our equipment . The whole point was that SVS could be reached easily for tech support even on the weekend. The same can't be said for Epik according to owners though I will admit this is perhaps due to Epik being a smaller company.

As for which sub is a step above the other, I would leave those assumptions to those that have the means to test both of them thoroughly. In the mean time we could agree to disagree

Smoke them how? Personally, I was pretty disappointed the way the Empire measured. Sure it's got a decent amount of output for its price but it's far from a linear performer. Bsically the response starts rolling off below 90Hz and it's down -10dB at 20Hz. My old Energy sub from 15 years ago was flatter than that. Since the Legend is much smaller sibling, I'd be surprised if it doesn't even match SB12NSD's +/-3dB spec unless they also used a massive EQ boost the bottom end like the Empire. Looking at the old SB12, the SVS will work better with a satellite system it's likely going to be paired with since it's linear from mid-20's out to 200Hz.

If the Legend measures anything like the Empire, I'd take the SVS any day.

Well there are hardly many reviews on the Legend so how is one to know how it fairs?

pb12 nsd

But for a 10x12ft room, the sb12nsd haven't a good punch for movie?
I read that it is very good for music, but for movie the difference is so big between the pb and sb?
can you tell me anything about bk than svs?

The PB12 NSD will have a stronger bottom end, but in a small room like that, the SB12 might do just fine. It's just not going to match the PB12 in output.
I really don't know anything about the BK.
then the pb might be overkill for my room?
the SB will be fine to give a good punch with the movie?
I think it also will buy the DSPEAKER Anti-Mode 8033s
post #619 of 819
The SB12 will perform well for movies in your size room. The PB12 will have a lot more deep bass output but the SB is perfectly enjoyable for a small home theater room.
then the pb is for larger rooms or at least for those who want the best descent in bass and their power.
I would run the risk of getting many more rumble with bp than with sb ..
is that correct?
sorry for my english!
My room is less that 1000 cuft and I am thinking about an SB13+. I have had M&K subwoofers, Velodyne DD15 (which I wish I still had) and then on to a PB13 Ultra.

The 13 ultra was a monster but I need a smaller footprint and I prefer the overall control of the bass rather than out and out extension, although the SB13+ seems to still rock it a fair bit.

So the SB13+.....good choice?
what ever happened to the 16" sealed sub?

Wow now your talking

good choice if your room isn't too large and you don't mind losing a bit of extension below 25Hz.

project was curtailed due to skyrocketing cost of neo magnets

As I said less than 1000 cu ft so a small room ideal for a compact but powerful sealed sub
post #627 of 819
In less than 1000 cu ft you wont have to give up anything below 25 hz, in fact you may need to use room compensation to cut the low end if the room is also sealed.
That's the perfect room for this sub.

I have a question regarding this for those who may have some experience with building subs, particularly in regards to costs and weight. I recognize that a Neo magnet 16" driver would weigh a bunch less, making it more feasible for shipping.

But what about changing the box materials from 1" MDF with a 1.5" to 2" face to a 3/4" Baltic birch with a 1" Baltic birch face. Just doing a quick back of the envelope calculation, it almost looks like the weight difference is a wash. Comparing the TC Sounds LMS5400 18" driver (86.2 pounds) to the TC Sounds 5100 Neo 18" driver (53.4 pounds) there is a difference of ~38% or 32.8 lbs.

Baltic birch is approximately 70 lb's for a 48*96 sheet, and MDF is at least 96 lb's per sheet (based off of a quick internet search, but I'm sure their is a more complex variance between the two based off of material quality, brand, etc). So BB weighs ~ 73% of MDF, is less toxic, and is thinner (giving a tiny edge up in interior volume for the same exterior dimensions).

Couldn't a box of the size and bracing of say, a current gen PB13U make up the weight difference with the material swap? Sure BB costs more, but the price difference would be less than the cost of Neo.

Or am I missing something obvious here?
