There is also the stated difference in contrast ratio but those numbers are BS anyways. As of right now he is leaning towards picking up a 46EX400 model as he can get a fantastic deal on it (less than a 40EX500). I'm just curious if there are any real differences between the two models that aren't apparent on paper (ie. does the EX400 model use an inferior panel)?
We've played with both the 400 and 500 models in the store, right next to each other in fact, and when the settings are identical and 120hz mode is turned off on the 500 the two sets literally look exactly the same albeit this is under store lighting conditions. I really wonder if the only difference between the two models is a couple of bytes in the firmware (to enable the 120hz interpolation) and a higher price tag on the 500 series...
I too am very interested in any information that could be of help to discern the differences in the two sets. I am also looking at either a 40EX500 or a 46EX400. The motionflow would be nice, but it's not necessary. I mostly watch HD Cable (Comcast), some Blu-Ray, and PS3 demos (for now at least ;-) ). I've looked at both sets in a Bestbuy and at a Sony Style store and could note really tell any difference (to my eyes with store settings).
Initially in this thread there was talk that the panel in the EX500 and EX700 had the same panel and were almost identical barring the BE3 and LED edge lit lighting. Other threads have put forth that the EX400 is similar to last year's S series which from what I have read, wasn't that great of a tv.
The crux of question is, how similar are the EX400 and EX500 models in PQ, panel type, and overall build.
I'm upgrading from a 32L4000 (budget of the budget 2 years ago lol) so most anything should be a step above. Internet features are cool, but not important as I am looking to get a Boxee Box and I have a PS3.
