I've actually got it sorted out! Thanks to a helpful reply at RC forums, I learned that my cable remote was programmable and had the ability to get the codes I needed. I used those and learned them to my MX-500 and now I'm in business.

BTW, the MX-500 (which is going on 10 years old) is finally about to give up the ghost, so I'm ordering an URC r40 to replace it. I'm wanting to move all of my learned codes to the new remote before the MX-500 finally dies and these were the last 2 codes I needed.

Here are the EFC's for several discretes on the above RCA or any modern JP1 remote using TV setup code 0810. On a cable remote like the comcast 1067BX3 with red OK button, use TV 1317 instead. Use the manual 9xx programming instructions at the wiki link in my signature.

If you still prefer the 1994, you can at least use the RCA to teach it once you program the EFCs. You can test any of these code before programming them by simply tapping Setup followed quickly by the code. The command is sent when you press the last digit. Post back if you need any more codes or help.

(BS = Bravia Sync commands, all of which work on PS3 and other devices that work with HDMI-CEC)

Notice that BS Pause doesn't exist on the sony remote, but it does work.

Serialmike is finally on board with sharpness set at 3, was only a matter of time

I leave the sharpness setting on the TV at "0" and instead bump it up a couple notches on my Oppo. Looks a helluva lot better that way, IMHO.

Years ago I found MY TV looks better to MY eyes with +3 Sharpness setting at the distance we watch our TV.

I go between 2 and 3. 3 is where it starts to get over sharpened.

There is more to the setting than just turning sharpness up to 3.

The full explanation is this. LCD sets use interpolation to reduce sample and hold effect of LCD tech. The use of Motionflow at the level I use does not introduce soap opera effect. Motionflow or any interpolation does have another effect. This effect is noise in the image. Almost looks like low bandwidth cable. Its very slight and many do not notice it.

A way to remedy this is to turn on MPG noise reduction. This is a special filter that removes mosquito noise around the edges of objects that happens in compressed MPG signals. It also happens to fix the Noise created by interpolation as I have discovered. Once you turn on the MPG noise filter you counter this by turning sharpness up a little bit.

The results are much improved image quality.

Has anyone had an issue where you could not turn your 55ex500 OFF? I have this happen about once every 3 weeks or so. I have tried both my Logitech and the factory Sony remote, the power button on the tv itself, and the only thing that works is unplugging the TV from the wall. Has anyone run into this?

Just tried to update the firmware on my 60" but tv still wont recognize a usb stick. This is the 3rd usb stick I've tried. Anybody have any idea why my tv's usb port is not working?

Is the usb drive formatted correctly? Some items will only see Fat32 vs NTFS.....

Is there a firmware update that I'm unaware of?

Are you doing the firmware update or the software update? The firmware hasn't changed in over a year, and the software update listed on the support page doesn't apply to the EX series (it updates the internet apps our model doesn't have). In any case, the EX expects FAT32.

I dont game much at all on my ps3 its really a glorified bluray and media streamer for me. My ps3 I use the same settings as my tv viewing. Also of note, When I game I pretty much use the custom settings even on xbox. Mostly because I dont do any worse than usual when playing blops of mw. Not sucking, Try Harder makes up for much more than a little lag

serialmike: is the picture quality for video games better overall when using custom mode, compared to graphics mode? IE do video game graphics benefit from the extra processing on custom mode?

I haven't posted here for a long time, but I just bought a new Blu-ray player (Sony BDP-S790) and started fiddling with the settings again.
Simple question: Is there any point in me trying to improve the white balance without professional equipment, or am I just wasting time?

Sure...... just make a note of your original settings in case you want to return to where you started. As the saying goes...... "nothing ventured, nothing gained".

40ex500 here, curious if there is any true difference to the game-original and game-standard modes. Also does the 24hz movie/bluray mode work while in the game scene modes??
I actually like the clarity of the picture while even watching movies in this mode with all processing turned off. But I would like to know if 24hz mode still works while using it (and is there anything else against using game mode for movies)? Otherwise I'm going back to the cinema mode.

Also, does the ambient light sensor still work? I notice that turning it off really brightens the screen to a level I've not seen before, even with a room full of daylight. Sometimes it seems a little dark with ambient sensor on, as opposed to being off. Has anyone else seen this? And what is the recommended setting.

Does this set have the Motionflow "clear" setting?

curious if anyone here with a Playstation 3 can chime in the optimal settings for our set. The the two settings I'm curious about are: RGB Full Range (hdmi) which can be set to limited or full, and the next setting: bd/dvd video output format (hdmi) which can be set to auto, rgb or y pb/cb pr/cr.
now which would be the best choice for gaming and bluray watching.
