Has anyone found a way to get the DLNA function not to skip? I notice that if I pause playback it seems good for a few seconds, but then it starts to stutter again. It's like it is playing the video just a bit quicker than it is actually requesting from the network.

Are you using a wired network or wireless?
I just put the content on a USB memory. Makes things easyer. Even plays AVCHD home made videos that way.

Funny you should ask because everyone at work is giving me hell today because my home has a wired gigabit network and I'm out of ports between my 8 port and 5 port gigabit switches. Anyway, the 370 is hard wired to the network. I'd really prefer being able to stream recorded shows directly off my Mac mini

Just got done chatting with Sony support. Maybe this is well known (I'm new to this thing) but Windows Media Player 11 is the only supported DLNA server option for the BDP-S370. Lame.

Yeah, sucks, but no surprise really. It does work well if you don't care about video quality

Best video quality I've found is using PlayOn. Just wish they would focus on improving trick play.

I just got the S370 yesterday. I've noticed that HD Netflix video appears to be choppy/jumpy, it's especially noticeable when the camera pans or there is a lot of full frame motion. Dropping frames? The quality of the picture is GREAT, just choppy movement. So far I've watched a couple of episodes of Weeds and the movie Food, Inc. (particularly bad) and both had the issue. SD video looks fine. Is this a known problem? I watched the HD sample on Amazon on demand and it looks flawless, perfect motion. It just seems like the player is really struggling to decode the HD Netflix video. For example while watching the video if I try to bring up the display/progress bar it kind of stutters into the place vs smoothly sliding upward. My firmware is updated, but I'm still having the problem no matter what troubleshooting steps I take.

My intuition is that this isn't a network/data problem, it appears more like a video processing issue.

Here's my setup: Comcast 20Mbit service (consistently 12+ on speedtest), Apple airport extreme router, the S370 is connected via ethernet to the router, 46" Z4100 Sony, everything is HDMI through my Denon receiver. Plugging directly into the cable modem didn't help.

Got this to replace my Sony BX1 blu-ray player specifically for Netflix...but if that doesn't work I might as well return and maybe get a Roku HD?

If other people with the 370/470 watch HD content (specifically Weeds, Food Inc.) are you getting nice smooth camera pans or is the image 'jumpy/jerky' like I'm getting? Why does Amazon HD work fine?

I think this is an issue with Netflix specifically. I see the exact same behavior across all of my devices, Wii, Mac and Windows

Well, I fixed my own problem! I googled like crazy and found tons of people complaining about this problem, but no solutions. I finally stumbled on the solution while trying every setting on my TV and Player. Turn off "Cinemotion" 3:2 pulldown!! No more choppyness to the video!

Would you mind sharing how you turn of "Cinemotion" Is that a setting on the TV or blu-ray? I see choppyness on my nextflix with 20Mb comcast also but I'm using an Olevia TV.

It is a setting on the TV. Look for something called "3:2 pulldown" or check in your manual. Cinemotion is a proprietary name Sony has given their 3:2 pulldown technology so it won't be called that on your TV. I won't guarantee this will solve your problem, but it made mine go away.

So I got an HDMI cable for HD. If I leave the video settings at auto will that still upscale or do I have to manually pick a setting to make it upscale DVDs? Also in your opinions is 780p or 1080i better? I've done some searching and some say 780p is better and some say 1080i is better. Unfortunatly, TV does not support 1080p. Thanks

Progressive all the way, using interlacing introduces two completely unnecessary steps.

Is anyone successfully streaming 1080p MKV files (8GB+) from a DLNA NAS box to this player (S370/470/570)?

I thought I read somewhere that the player is very picky when it comes to DLNA servers.

Trying to decide between this and the Sony Netbox SMP-N100. Feature set on both is similar but the netbox doesn't have a blu-ray player which I don't need as bad as I need DLNA, MKV, Netflix, Pandora, and (upcoming) Hulu Plus.

Is your TV a 1080p set?

If it is 1080p, set the BD player to 1080i, since you will not lose any picture information, as 1080p24 can be sent complete as 1080i60. If you have a 720p TV, set the player to 720p.

If your TV is 768p (as most "720p" plasmas are), I would try both 1080i and 720p and see if you can tell the difference. If you can't, I'd set it to 1080i.

Thanks for the responses. What about the upscaling question? Can I leave at auto or do I have to manually select an output mode to upscale a DVD?

Depends on the quality of each component and who has the better upscaling chip. The TV is going to upscale to its panel size, so just test to see what way looks best to you.

Since you won't be using the "Original Output Resolution" setting (which would output 480i/p for DVD's), DVD's will be scaled/deinterlaced to whichever output resolution you choose, 1080i or 720p (the same as the resolution for BDs).

With the "Auto" setting, the player just sets its output resolution automatically (via HDMI communication) to the maximum your TV will accept.

Do any of you have problems getting Netflix or Slacker to load? I can get the programs booted up but whenever I try to select a movie or get a genre of music to play, it wont stream! Just says network down after awhile. Youtube, Pandora, and the other programs still work.

When watching Netflix, do you have to add movies to your instant que on your computer? Or can you access the entire Netflix library from the blu ray?

You need the PC. The Netflix implementation on this player is very basic, probably the worst. Nothing close to the PS3, probably the best.

Yes, I absolutely hate Sony's implementation of Netflix. Tiny little images, and they are not circular, once you get to the end, I have 120 moves in my instant queue, you have to scroll back through all of them to get to the beginning, and same to get to the end - a real pain. My Samsung has large easy to see movie info and at the end it just starts over, no need to go back through all of the list. One of the main reasons my Sony is now sitting in a secondary system.

Is there talk of Sony adding support for online TV such as CBS.com and ESPN3?

You can also scroll up and down instead of just left/right.

I purchased a Sony S370 last month - and tonight noticed the green bar at the bottom of the screen during DVD replay (using the S370 to upscale to 1080p). I checked it on a DV Essentials disc - and it is particularly noticeable on magenta and blue colour bars and colour fields. (This is on 576/50i content output at 1080/50p)

Has anyone fixed this - short of running with the player in native resolution mode?

Has there been any response from Sony? It is quite subtle - but when you notice it, you notice it. I find it most obvious on slightly noisy, quite dark scenes...

Here's a quick screen-shot I took of a full-frame green from a test DVD - stripe clearly visible in the lower portion of the screen (though not on thumbnail).

Yes, but when you get to the end you have to go back through everything you just went through. If it were circular after the last movie in the instant queue you would come to the first. Not a problem is you only have a few movies in the list but once you reach 25, 30 and beyond it's irritating, at least for me.

Both of my older dvd players when you put in a dvd you did not finish always went back to where you left off... this one does not do it. Am I missing something to make that happen.
Thanks

It'll work with DVDs. But, no Blu-ray players resume on BDs with Java encoding, which is most of them. Players have some bookmark functions, but they don't work nearly as well as the resume feature we learned to love with DVD.

FYI, my sister and I both bought a S470 about the same time, about 3 months ago. Hers is now stuck with a Loading message when she puts any disc in it. I hope these things do not have a high failure rate. She is phoning Sony about it.
