Well, it works fine for Netflix, Amazon, and streaming my MediaCenter and PlayOn DLNA content fine. That covers a fair chunk of the market. The rest of the streaming stuff is just taking up space in my view. I agree, I'd like to be able to remove most of it from the UI .

I think it was said best elsewhere: if streaming is your PRIMARY focus, get a dedicated streaming box like a Roku, or a full-on MediaCenter PC that will do just about everything. If you want a Blu-Ray player that will also stream Netflix or Amazon (or Pandora for music), this works great, as will some other Blu-Ray players, just not necessarily at this price point for quality Blu-Ray playback.

Also note that you can use PlayOn as kind of the back door to a lot of other streaming support.

This player is actually on my Christmas List

I'm hoping to get it anyway.

I would primarily be using it for netflix, and PlayOn media streaming, and the occasional Blu-Ray. Thanks to everyone for very informative reviews and input!

Using PlayOn via a Wireless computer, how difficult is using this media software? Can someone not network savvy be able to set up and then explain to his even less tech savvy wife how to use it? I'm really interested in streaming my home movies and pictures, and music. Thanks everyone!!

I don't do wireless at all at home, so I can't comment on that part of the setup. Setting up on a computer requires making sure you've got some hard drive room for the video transcoding bits, installing PlayOn, selecting your streaming sources (which may include entering userids/passwords if the web sites require them), and letting it run. It's fairly automated so you shouldn't have too much trouble. On the Blu-Ray player it will show up in the Video section just above the current disc. The latter part is of primary interest to your wife, she just scrolls up to it, selects it, and browses for what she wants to watch.

I am researching Blu rays and want to buy one as a gift with good internet apps for my kid to use in a second room. Panasonic Viera not so hot with respect to choices and I am leaning toward the Sammy C5500 and the Sony S370. They both seem to have their issues but I seem to hear less issues with Sony other than this vibration issue and the Sony proprietary annoyance. Would owners give one as a gift?

I'm giving the Sammy c6500 as a gift primarily because of the way their netflix menus work. I like Sony because it has slacker and and you can't beat the slacker and pandora screensavers. The Sammy just shows the Sammy logo as a screensaver. The dlna on the Sammy is more compatible. I can't get the Sony to play my videos via dlna but no big deal. I can always burn then to DVD if I really need to watch it on the Sony.

I'm convinced that no reviewer actually bothered to try the streaming services this thing claims to support. Example, blip.tv's diggnation feed's newest entry is from 2008. This player was released in 2010. Most of the feeds this thing has built into it, which aren't editable, are behind or not updating with no obvious way to refresh the content.

Yeah, I noticed this with Wired content, as well. Pretty lame.

That said, I don't think all the content is like that. I have been enjoying Crackle and those titles seem to revolve slowly. Some will age off and others will appear. Of course on Crackle *ALL* the titles are OLD!

So you have to click the item you want again and then wait for it to go through seemingly the exact same process before you can finally launch whatever it is you want. Like Netflix.

Agreed with this criticism. In addition, sometimes it will not connect to the internet at all when I ask for streaming content. When it does this, I have been finding that if I go and ask it for an update it will *always* connect. Then I can go to any of the streaming apps and they will work correctly.

I don't think you are missing anything. It is what it is. What doesn't make ANY sense is showing two-year-old content on "news" sites! Not cool!

I actually wish there was a way to turn this off. I don't like the fade-out effect because I often look to see what is playing when it happens to be "faded out". Also, half the time it is positioned such that the text is off the screen.

I also find the "Checking Internet Connection" message very annoying. Just connect and don't tell me about it and for goodness sake don't make me select "close" after you've established connection!

Some of these things were not designed very well and I'm afraid we won't be getting any updates to address these items since I'm sure they are moving on to their new generation of players.

Lol. They have to shift the image around so it doesn't burn in plasmas. I like the Sammy pandora functionality because you can back up and look for other channels w/o stopping the current song that is playing. With the Sony, it stops the current song when you return to the menu. Guess there are pros/cons to both players. I just wish Sony would fix the dlna issue with video.

I have an S470.

Anyone been able to get Amazon Video On Demand to output 5.1?

I've tried and tried and am only getting 2 channel sterio. I send the the stream from my s470 to a denon 4308 via hdmi.

Not here. I also have the S470. I read about that issue on an Amazon review and then I tried it on mine. Two channels is all I get over coax digital audio into my receiver.

It appears one has to to press "Home" to get to the XMB, make your changes . . . but then you can't return directly back to where you were in disc play?

Speaking to my own query, I was correct/you can't return to where you were in disc play. You can with SA-CDs (and probably CDs; will check DVDs at some later point). I suspect this is a BD-Java issue. Not unlike not being able to use 'resume play' (press "Stop" once and go back to where you were by simply pressing "Play") on any BD that uses Java, I think any disc with Java-powered menus precludes you from being able to access basic settings and then return to disc playback where you left off. But this is a more player-specific implementation example because the Oppo BDP-83, for example, permitted you to access the Setup menu on the fly.

I got it to play 5.1 last night BUT it only played multi channel input on the receiver and didn't offload the 5.1 decoding to the receiver. Is this just how it works or can you have amazon vod playback offload the decoding to the receiver? My DVD/blurays offload to the receiver since I have " mix" set to off.

Sad to say that after getting the 370 on Black Friday it died last night.Failed to read ALL media I loaded. I played maybe 6 BD 4 DVD and 3SACD.
Best Buy exchanged it for me luckily.

That's good news, but I'm not sure I understand how you did it. Can you please tell us the setup that works properly for you? Both your cabling (HDMI, digital optical, etc.) and settings would be helpful. Thanks!

Hdmi from the s470 to the receiver then hdmi to the tv. Most settings are default except for bd mix which I turned off to let the receiver do the audio decoding but this seems to only be working for bluray/DVDs. The receiver is saying that it is receiving Multi Channel Input which says to me that the s470 is doing the audio decoding internally. Also there were two versions of the movie to choose from in the amazon menu: HD and SD. I watched HD.
i have the same settings, but my denon 4308 said it was receiving sterio 2 channel for the amazon on-demand hd movie.

Hmmm. I have a 4308ci hooked up to a bdp-s570 upstairs. When i get home in a few hours I will test it out to see what the 4308 says.

It looks like once you rent a movie from amazon, you can't transfer it to another device. Hopefully there is a free demo video with 5.1. I'll post the results when I get home.

There is a free demo of Superman in HD. It says that it includes 5.1 audio.

Wow on not being able to see what CD/SACD track number you're on from the player display/without having to look at the television. Unless I'm missing something, this is lame.

I have one small issue with my BDP-S370. If I playback a DVD in it once in a while it stutters, pauses and sounds like it's trying to access the disc but can't. During which time no matter what buttons you push nothing happens. If you hit "Home" it still takes a little while but will go to the home screen. Reloading the DVD it works OK. This has happened 3 different times. Once with a DVD-9 and twice including today with a DVD-5, so I know it's not a layer change error. Any ideas? Strangely enough, it has never done that on any Blu-ray disc or playing media off the USB port.

Ok. I gotta say that I am impressed with Amazon VOD. It let me select the movie I watched last night from my video library and play it on my s570. The 4308ci displays "Multi CH IN" and I can see that 5.1 speaker inputs on the left of the display which is then outputing 5.1 speaker inputs on the right of the display (on the 4308). I just hooked up the 570 last week and all I did was turn off BD MIX, turn off deep color, and hook up wifi. all other setting are default.... The 570 is hooked up the 4308 via HDMI.

any recommendations on good SACDs? I was looking dark side of the moon and Norah Jones but was disturbed by the bad reviews on amazon. I want a SACD that exemplifies all that SACD has to offer.

Better to pose this query here than additionally task this player thread with software-exclusive discussion:
