Im about to start my measurements.....Yep, I build it all first and finish then I measure it

Speakers are 16"x26"x13.5"

Both are using the QSC waveguide (14"x10") and the woofer is the TD12M (12" woofer)

One has the BMS4550 and the other has the Celestion 1425.

Build pics will be posted soon, when I find them. I have lost some pictures

Boards left to right are 8"x26", 6.5"x26", 6"x26", 6.5"x26",8"x26"

I use a 22.5" joint router bit for the back of the box, this creates 45" angles and nice joints for it all to go together. (http://www.amazon.com/22-5-Degree-Gl.../dp/B002VI90UK)

I believe the port is 3" x 3"

Dimensions of the speaker 26 H x 16" W x 13.5" D

I added to more braces once I figured out what CD I was using, I put a brace across the width that the CD can sit on.

painting expirements.

My temp wall to protect against wind and dust

Oil based paint, using rollers.

dry

sanded with 600

after several more coats and sanding (about 5 more times), this is my first buff/polish. All sides are great minus that ghosting on the back

Painting expirements exhausted. I will be puting a coat of polyurethane on it all anyways so here is box sanded so there is no gloss in the black and the veneer on the front.

Upclose shot of the corner, i had to cut and fold the veneer here. There is a small gap that I have sand over. Its about as good as I could get it.

Another pick off the coner with the front holes now cutout. I can live with that corner.

Mine modified stand for them, I had 16" stands still in boxes unused so I cut the middle pieces to 5" so I could have a 6" stand.

here they are in room

Here they are with all my other DIY speakers....lol, Im not sure having the other speakers there will be good for measurements.

Im using a taller stand for measuring and you can seen my 5" thick DIY acoustical panels on the floor and behind. They turned out great too!!

Beautiful veneer, Penn--as always.
Looking very nice! Looks like a fun build, can't wait to see more pics. I'd love to build something along those lines
post #12 of 258
holy crap penn! very nice work. (that doesn't even begin to describe it.)

are those td12m 'stubbies' an older version?

how did you get the veneer wrapped around the corners to look that nice?

your choice of colors is also awesome...performance meets luxury. i'm calling your speakers m5's. ;-)

Wow!
Very nice. Thats a veneer? Looks like solid wood. What are the dimensions of the drivers and cabs?
Look good Penn. Looks like you made them a little smaller than the "No Quarter". How big are they? Are these for 2-channel music?
Woah, very nice job on the finish !

Can't wait to hear what you think about them, and how they measure (using the BMS 4550 as well).
DAMN Penn!!!! Those look like they're going to sound GREAT!!! Good job!!!
Those look impressive Penngray. I can't wait to see the build pictures. Great looking speakers.

Very nice looking. Congratulations. Can't wait to hear your impressions. I find there is a huge amount of technical information around but very little subjective listening descriptions. The difference between the 2 CD's should be very interesting indeed. I wonder how the QSC 12" (celestion) would compare against your TD12's ?

Before I jump into the deep end with something similar I still wonder about 2150 clones 3 way's (Chucky's build) using better drivers? Imagine B&C 15's or even pairs of TD15"s with some sort of upgraded 6.5 mid & BMS 4555 up top. Any thoughts or advice? Again great looking speakers you have there.

If you soak the veneer with some softner stuff (from veneersupplies.com) it bends nicely.

I place blue painters tape along the since so I have a guide and the glue doesnt get on the painted sides. Then I trim using a veneer edging guide (from rockler), it trims to 3/4" in a straight line. I pull off the blue tape after that and I have a pretty nice and even edge.

I sand the edge down a little but in the end its still a little raised from the side. Its okay though, its very hard to see unless you put your finger on it.

Your speakers are looking really good, I hope mine turn out in the same zip code for quality. Thanks for updating the build photo's, I had not thought of using the router to make the angles, I was going to build the typical rectangular box but may alter after looking at your latest photos.

Such a cut little port

They look really good, did you go with the dcx cross over or did you go passive?

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Im nowhere near the quality of what some of the best do one here!!! Im very happy though since I do not have any professional tools in getting great finishes. I also sometimes move on and not worry about a flaw or two. I know where all the flaws are (small veneer cracks, gaps in the veneer and paint and so on)

The port was a funnying thing....I had to figure out how to get the hole cut and I realized I could just get a hole cutter.

Then, use a router bit to get the PVC pipe to fit snug with the wood. I think used a flush trim bit to route out the inside flush with the PVC.

I want to do passive in the end because I have never done a sucessful one but I will be starting with a DCX.

Thanks, I still wish I could do a professional paint job. Maybe this year I will buy some equipment.

The TD12Ms look normal to me, is there something different?

Cuts, sizes and everything updated above.

Looks good, Penn.

I know that you are primarily a HT guy and your objectives are efficiency with low distortion, but I have to ask, have you ever been tempted to take a shot on a stereo full range set with something like Scanspeak Revelator drivers? It would be interesting to see something like this with an active crossover design. (to me at least )
Penngray, I am impressed with the results.

That's quite a collection of speakers you have there.
