I think your 260 is old enough (and is a different chip) so it isn't affected by the fan speed and performance bug.

Yes thanks.. before installing the new card, I went thru the PPA updates to the latest (and of course rebooted into low graphics mode and had to remove all nvidia and re-install... the new driver works fine except it refuses to save any xorg.conf ANYWHERE.. even when I run as sudo, or try to save in $HOME... #$^%#%#$%# linux audio and video )

When you get that figured out, please post the solution !!!
