Panasonic DMP-BD65 - Page 14

thanks! When I setup my BD65 on Saturday, it did a firmware upgrade on the spot, but I guess this one is new.

Do we get prompted to do the firmware updates, or do we have to manually do it?

(sorry for the newb questions..)
Holy Crap, without having done another firmware upgrade the entire Vieracast page has changed and now includes Pandora and Twitter among others. Not only that, but the interface is improved and in the Veriacast settings, you can customize your pages so that the apps you want appear on the first page and you can push unwanted or less used apps to the second or third page.

FYI if you are connected to the network, by default it should prompt you when there is a new version available, but you can also try to do a manual upgrade if you wish in which case it will go out and check and let you know if there is a new version available and give you the option to upgrade.

Unfortunately the Netflix interface appears unchanged. i.e. no searching, just selecting shows in your current queue.

Overall though, my BD65 just got a whole lot better!

thx

I think it is silly as well. I have a Wii and I'm able to at least browse through its Netflix streaming. However, the quality of NF streaming on the BD65 is much better. My plan is to add movies to my queue through my Netflix iPhone app and do it that way instead of using my regular laptop. I almost always have my phone near me.

Sweet. Now that Pandora is officially on VieraCast, it's time to sell my Panny BD35 on Craigslist.

Why isn't Pandora showing up on my BD65? I have the latest firmware loaded.

I don't have a BD65 yet. I would assume you should try to update your player again. Or press the VieraCast button

It didn't show up on mine right away after updating the firmware. A couple of days later when I went to the Network function I had an all new VieraCast with the new apps. Maybe rebooting will force it?

Panasonic changed the VieraCast interface and requires a new firmware in order to see the new content (it happened a few times in the past). Typically, Panasonic will release a new firmware first (via internet auto-download or Panasonic Global website, not Panasonic US site. US site usually is very slow to post new firmware versions). A week later, they flip the switch on VieraCast server and the new content will be available on your player assume you already updated the firmware.

As far as the Netflix UI goes, you can only stream from your queue? Or can you select movies by search (like the free stuff)?

Is there a way to get rid of the annoying "ding" while surfing Vieracast? I couldn't find it under the BD settings menu.

I believe that there is a setting for the Viera Cast that you can select the ding on or off. Just find the square in the Viera Cast that says settings.

Ok, I've got a question: I've got a three or four week old BD655 (costco version) and two or three times now it's locked up towards the end a BD movie. No forward, no back buttons do anything, all I can do is stop, return to the beginnning, and forward back to the spot it locked up. Once it played thru it, once I restarted and FF thru it and play continued and once it just skipped to the end of the movie after hitting the same spot where it locked up before. I've had some BD and DVD's play fine. So does this sound like something is wrong with the media (Netflix rental) or do you think the player has an alignment issue or something? I tend to think it's the media but at this point I'm not sure. BTW: the player runs hotter than heck, it's on an open shelf.

As of now, you can only view movies already in your instant queue. Hopefully they change this soon.

Sounds atypical to me. I'd exchange it for the same model and see if you can repeat the experience using the same disc(s). I haven't had any issues like this with mine in the couple of months I've been using it, and my main source of Blu rays is Netflix.

just bought a BD655P-K from costco for 130 bucks after a 30 dollar instant rebate.

Excited to set it up next week

So I finally broke down and bought one of these on Amazon tonight after realizing that my HTPC is on its last leg and seeing that it was on sale. This device claims to be DLNA compliant. Has anyone tried it out with the MediaMall PlayOn service? One of the great things about having a HTPC is that I can run a full-featured system like Boxee that gets me everything, but I don't get that with VieraCast; at least not for free content anyway.

UPDATE: After reading this thread a little more throughly, I see that DLNA is not supported in the US version (for some dumb reason). Either way, I've it's either TotalMedia Theatre screwing up or my GGC-H20L that is finally dying (it's probably time to let my HD-DVDs go anyway, lol). For replacing my Blu-ray capabilities this should be good and then I'll keep my HTPC around until the Boxee Box comes out in November (since that's all I'll be using my HTPC for after getting this).

Will costco refund me $30 with the coupon in this months ad even though I bought the player months ago? By the way, I have no complaints with the 655. Only problem I had was with a scratched netflix rental that I doubt any player could play it.

Not sure about the costco refund but I'll be finding out, I'm going there in a few minutes to return this unit for another. Did the player lock up on that scratched disk (see my post up five or so).
EDIT: OK, I returned the unit for in store credit, then bought the same unit for $30 less. Now I'll have to see if I have any more lockups or not.

I'm very interested in this player, but I have an issue with my current setup. My display has only 1 component input and 1 dvi/hdmi input. It is a panasonic broadcast model, which i can get another input if I purchase a videocard but Im trying not to if I can get away with it.

I use the dvi/hdmi input currently with my laptop.

I run the component input via a Rotel processor which, i'm not sure does 1080p pass through. It passes 100mhz component signals...

My questions are: will this player pass 1080p via its component outputs? (my display is 1080p compatible)

does anyone know if 100mhz is an acceptable bandwidth limit for 1080p pass-thru?

thanks

All Blu-ray players pass 1080p over component.

oh really? thats wonderful to know. Do you have an answer for my other question? do you think the Rotel will have any issue passing the 1080p signal to my display? I went ahead and ordered the player. Amazon had a fabulous deal on it today. I just hope I have no issues with Netflix HD streaming that I read on some of the comments on there/here.

Are you sure? I'm no expert but:
"the licenses governing BD-ROM A/V do NOT allow 1080p outputs on analog connectors. The maximum permissible output resolution is 1080i60. This has nothing to do with the ICT flag btw, so it doesn't matter if ICT=0 or ICT=1."

Just chiming in:
Received my DMP-BD65 along with a Sony KDL-55HX701. This player operates beautifully with the HX701. Connected via HDMI, it upscales beautifully and, in fact, with some DVDs, I cannot believe the quality. Some, such as The Incredibles, Gran Torino, Avatar and others display such quality that I would be hard pressed to tell that they aren't BluRay. Cheap, works great! Again, using HDMI and configured settings for the input and the player at 1080p.

Im a bit confused, but just to clarify, has anyone been able to send 1080p via component out?

According to the manual, Component will only output at up to 1080i.
oh ok. that sucks, that means i have to buy a new hdmi terminal board for my display...

one more question: I'd like my Rotel SSP to do the audio signal processing, but it does not support the new high resolution audio formats. Ideally I'd like to use the DACs in the rotel vs the ones in the Panasonic. Will this player convert DolbyTruHD or DTS-HD to its Dolby Digital and DTS via the optical path? or am I complicating things too much and should just go with the analog out for left and right channels? (I have two full range speakers and a subwoofer).

Or nothing at all next year when select output is implemented to shut off all analog outputs.

So, let me get it straight, you want to convert the hi-res lossless TrueHD and DTS-HD MA to lossy crappy DTS or DD so that you can use the superior DAC in the Rotel to process the already messed up audio?

You should have bought the BD85 to have 7.1 analog output to your receiver. Yes, you can use the L/R output of the 65 to try reprocess the 5.1 out of it. It will be no better than you going with DD or DTS via optical.
