Push the mute button on your TV's remote and fire up your receiver. That's the way I do it, since my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs/outputs and I use its optical connection.

I used a 2GB thumbdrive. I would think 8GB would/should work as well.

You should be able to burn a data disc and do the update as well ... but the UDB option should work. For whatever reason, I couldn't get it to work until I reformatted my USB thumbdrive FAT32 and copied the files ... it should have worked, but it didn't ...

Got it to work would not work with usb. so burned to a cdr and worked right away.

However with one of my vob movies which has subtitles it will not display them nor are they listed when i press the info button. however when i play the movie with vlc media player it works fine. How can that be fixed. Not sure if there hard coded or not its a direct rip with a dvd I own.

Since I now own both the LG and Samsung, I can continue to monitor their support for local streaming of HD media files as the firmware is updated.

This was most helpful! Thank you. I currently have a Samsung BD-C5500 that continually loses its Netflix activation. I am planning on returning it and the LG BD-570/590 we being considered as replacements as was the Sony S570. I think I shall give the LG a try.

It seems that the audio from a bluray disc is much lower coming out of the BD570 for me. I have to jack the volume up on my TV pretty high. But the audio level is fine when I'm playing files off my usb drive.

In my experience, playing the VOB files directly is pretty weak compared to playing DVD files properly. I think what you have is probably about as good as it is going to get.

The only real long term solution is to rip everything in a supported format - probably MP4. It kind of sucks since the ripped DVDs I have are all legal and I'd like to be able to just play them, but the HTPC was a pain for the family to use, so the 570 still works out better even with the issues.

Hello all. Just picked up the BD590 and hooked it up wireless to my home network. I have a HR21 Directv hd dvr that i see on the network. I downloaded from Directv the Directv2pc software to run movies off of the reciever to my computer. Works great. My lg bd590 see's the dvr on the network. I try to connect with it and i can even see the content that is saved on the dvr. When i attempt to play the movies and such on the dvr the bd590 start's trying to access but suddenly shut's down and i have to restart the lg. Has anyone successfully connected through there lg's to a directv hddvr?

Has anyone figured out a way to do this? Manual shows how you can control volume on TV, but not volume controlled by an AV receiver.

This kind of thing usually requires that the devices support HDMI-CEC (aka VieraLink, BraviaSync, AnyNet, etc.). So make sure HDMI-CEC is enabled on your receiver, assuming it supports it. It can sometimes be tricky to get to work right. You may need to power down all devices, then power them up in a certain order before it starts working the way you want.

An alternative is to use something like a Harmony remote.

Yeh, good point on using the Harmony remote...I have a H1, will use it for this requirement, thanks!

Before I buy the 570, I have a concern...

I have collections of TV shows on my PC that are from torrents. Most are avi, some are mkv...Will the 570 stream these? I'll use tversity if needed.

Yes. I stream mkv's and avi's on my 590 with Tversity all the time. It works flawlessly.

sigmaace01,

This machine has played all my files - most of them are downloaded avi's and mkv's. It will even play flawlessly 1080p rips. The question you should ask though, isn't whether it would play your files, but if it can stream your files (read: if it's gonna "like" your other devices consisting your network), which is a complete different story... The way this function is gonna be implemented for your setup may vary from what you are expecting... (but, on the other hand, you may just be lucky and have everything working as advertised)

Hey guys,

Has anyone had a problem keeping this thing connected on a constant basis with the wireless connection? I can't seem for the life of me to get this thing to hold a connection. I have to keep trying and trying. It connects to my wireless dsl but it won't connect to the internet.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

YES, I'm having intermittent audio drops with Pandora also, wired LAN Ethernet connection also (10 Mb/s download, business class). Called both Pandora and LG support -they pointed the finger at each other. Has somebody found a resolution to this problem?

No Pandora problems here. Time Warner Turbo Roadrunner. Usually get around 6-8 mbs.

same like ps3, but u can not dload mkv onto ps3 hard drive, not compatible.

but if u attach a usb storage device to 390, or 50, how is mkv, and high def audio handled?

Actually if u can use mkv2vob to fool the ps3 to play mkv with dts audio. After u do that on ur pc u can copy the mkv to the ps3. I use my 590 for this because no conversion is needed it plays it straight up.

Thanks! but I do not understand if mk2vob works like tversity and would let me stream and dload on ps3 and it will play with high def audio? If it would do by cheating by all means, I will love too..lol

I bought the Oppo BDP-83 mainly based on reviews and I find that expect for speed, it's picture and audio quality is no better than the Pioneer 51FD I sold for cheap. SD DVD playback is better on the Oppo however. So I am planning to return it since $499 is a lot to pay for just speed, since the Oppo doesn't have any extra features. My question is if I don't need Wi-Fi and 250 GB space, is there point to pay more for the 590 over the 570 or even the 550. I am only interested in picture and audio quality and my Internet connection will be hard wired. Are the three palyer identical except for the Wi-fi and storage ? THANKS.

I had to make the same decision and finally bought a 550. Very happy but I wish I had gone with the 570. I have a fairly extensive home network, servers etc and I think I would like to be able to stream some stuff. At this time I really don't think I would spend the money for a 590 just to have another HD (assuming the network access works right)
At the time I bought it I was being conservative with the cash. I have access to my music on the servers since I have a whole house audio system.
Maybe I will move the 550 to my office and try a 570 if the price is right.

For anyone interested I hooked up my BD570 and was able to stream AV files directly off an AirPort Extreme AirDisk USB attached hard drive with no special settings or software. Drive must be formatted Fat32 and AirDisk Windows sharing must be turned on. No need to attach drives directly to BD570 if you have an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

Mkv2vob does not work like tversity. It's just used for the ps3 to fool it to play mkv with dts audio. You still need tversity to stream it to the ps3 after mkv2vob conversion. The lg 570 or 590 does not need the extra step. It streams mkv's with tversity just fine.

Ah I see! an extra step to convert first I am fed up of streaming incompatibilities and looking for some thing( player) that could play mkv , ts, m2ts, xvid hd etc with high def audio. Streaming works with my ps3 though.
thanks

Going from the Oppo to the LG you might be disappointed with the DVD video quality.
I upgraded from the LG 370 to the 570. With Netflix HD titles on the 370, a HD logo would pop up when I started a HD title. If my connection speed was too low, a warning would pop up, too. With the 570, I haven't seen this. Should there be an indication of HD? The PQ is nice.
