Official LG BD550/BD560/BD570/BD590 Owners Thread - Page 61

Got my BD570 today from Amazon Warehouse Deals! This is to replace a Toshiba BDX2700 that was defective & returned, so essentially it is my second BDP I have owned.

After getting the wi-fi connected, I checked for FW updates. The FW that the 570 shipped with was .254 and now with the new FW update, it is at .283 and 'Napster' was added to the Network apps.

Haven't tried a BD yet but SDVD looks very good. The You Tube app is excellent. The remote commands are very responsive. I like that the blu-ray symbol on the front isn't blaringly bright and that it doesn't even lite up, but rather has lights on either side of it instead. I have it connected in my bedroom to my 51" Toshiba CRT HD RPTV and the picture is excellent. So far I like it far better than the other BDP I returned; more apps, remote commands are more responsive, just a better looking/functioning machine all around. ANd I am sure BDs will be amazing looking, at least as good as my HD DVDs look on my A35.

I am hoping it will last and that LG keeps adding apps via FW updates. I have other LG products in my home, and have been very pleased with the performance of those so I feel the BD570 will be equally as satisfying. Not sure I will use all features this player offers, such as an external HDD or any USB device for that matter. So all this talk about using HDD these last few pages is a moot point (at least at this time) to me.

SO I am off to scan thru some more of this thread, but is there anything specific I should be aware of and looking at in this thread that I may miss in 60 pages of posts?

gordita, you say, "I would connect the 570 to a 50" plasma via hdmi and optical to my HT receiver for sound."

My question is, why not connect the 570 directly to the HT receiver by HDMI and the HT receiver to your Plasma by HDMI?

You would save having to use an extra cable and it is my understanding that no depreciation in visual quality would result in this cabling.

I'm way over the 30 days return period and stuck now... Playing DivX from USB/Disc was/is very critical to me...

Is there any work around? Like putting different firmware - may be from Europe model (they support video)...?

The firmware is exactly same for 550 & 570, so guess it is theoretically possible to alter the firmware to enable this missing feature... This is sad that code is already there in firmware but they have disabled the feature...

Hello - I am trying to stream videos from Synology NAS 209 to BD570 player over wi-fi. NAS is connected wired to router Netgear Rangemax WNR3500L 'n' and 570 is on wi-fi. 570 is able to detect the NAS in two ways, one is DLNA and second is regular CIFS folder sharing.

When I tried to play m2ts video via DLNA its not all playing. Just the first frame of video appears and it stops. When I tried to play the same file via regular CIFS share, it could able to play the file but completely stuttering.

But I could able to stream avi and other files without any issue at all.

Also able to stream vudu, netflix, cinemanow movies without any issues at all.

Appreciate any ideas on how I can stream the files from NAS. thanks.

I'm not really sure who you're responding to, but its possible that person's receiver does not have HDMI inputs (such as mine).
Even if my receiver did have HDMI inputs I may be weary of connecting everything through the receiver because I would be afraid of PQ loss.
I guess I'm just old school and like to connect my devices directly to the display.

I am considering either buying the older LG BD390 or the newer LG BD570 or 590. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on which way to go?
Im planning on using an external hard drive so really dont need internal hard drive built into the player.

Can't comment on other AVR but with my Denon 789 there is ZERO PQ loss. No reason not to connect to AVR first via HDMI if ones AVR has at minimum 1.3a HDMI capability.

Both are New. BD570 is model without internal HD and BD590 is with internal HD.

If there is no Video processor on the AV , there will be ZERO PQ loss since HDMI is PURE DIGITAL SIGNAL.

My Denon 789 has video processing capabilities. But HDMI is feed-thru untouched. Not any AVRs on the market today that I am aware of that are HDMI capable and no video processing on board.

That being said, currently I have my BD570 connected via component cables directly to the TV which is a CRT HD RPTV in my bedroom with only DVI. WHen I use a HDMI>DVI cable the picture cycles off/on/off/on. Same thing happened with my Toshiba BDX2700 so I'm not sure if the reason is because of the java, that BDP's don't convert well, or the wrong cable is being used or what. I know the cable & TV didn't have any problems when I used the cable to connect my Denon 789 to the CRT HD RPTV before I got a different TV. No problems at all.

OK, please be gentle, I am not a pro LOL! 570 attached to a SONY STR-DG810 AND one attached to SONY STR-DG820. Both are HDMI. The audio settings are both set to PASS-THRU. Using a Blu-ray with a picture in picture commentary (such as Dawn of the Dead), I lose both audio and menu sound effects. If I change both settings to DTS RE-ENCODE, I get them both back, but lose full DTS on the STR-DG820.

Am I doing something wrong?
Why is this happening?
Why can't the bozos at customer support understand English?

I thank you all in advance for your help...
So the 570 is connected via HDMI to both AVRS? Or do you have 2 different 570 units?
Two 570s...Two different rooms....two different set-ups.
Go to your BD570 manual and look at page 84. Your answer is in *1 at the bottom of the page.
Thanks Splicer, the answer to my second question is on page 85, second bullet from the bottom. However, there doesn't seem to be any solutions, other than selecting DTS-Re-encode, which limits the audio to DTS 5.1 output. That actually works for the downstairs setup, which is the 810. it only has 5.1 anyway.

I wish there was another answer in the manual other than "this is what MAY happen", such as IF THIS HAPPENS, DO THAT.

Side question: what is the difference between plain old DTS and DTS HD? or will I need upper end sound equipment to hear the difference? And I apologize if this question belongs in another forum...

The BD550 I ordered for my den-office arrived from Walmart yesterday. It is just what I wanted for my den-office (adequate features, small size and modest cost).

It is cabled by HDMI to a Pioneer AV receiver and by Ethernet to a Linksys router. For my first check, I loaded discs of AVATAR and LEGENDS OF JAZZ. The audio and visual qualities of the BD550 provided excellent viewing and listening pleasure.

I was pleased to find that it also connected immediately and without difficulty to the internet where I downloaded and installed a software update.

For a secondary or small office environment, I heartily recommend this LG Blu-ray player. It is an excellent entry level unit at a very appealing rate of cost.

I recently picked up the 570 and am very pleased with it. Downloaded the latest firmware and so far plays just about everything. Having some issue with mkv files that I created, but I'm sure I'll figure that out. One thing I want to comment is that I am able to stream VOB files with the latest firmware. I know someone mentioned they could not but it works for me. I do need to select the individual vobs to play but it works. 2 questions I have are:

1. Is there are way to have the player automatically play all the movie files? For a number of my ripped movies, I have them in multiple parts with same name but .part1.avi/mpeg etc. Would be great if the player would automatically switch to the next part. Granted I haven't tried it yet but am curious.

2. Is there a way for the system to display the movie art? I have a jpg in each of the folders however it seems to only work for those movies where I have a single file. If the movie has several part as I listed above it will not display the jpg. Thought?

Thanks

Are you streaming straight from a network share, or are you using a server like Nero or WMP?

I am streaming straight from network share. I have a ReadyNas Pro which provides DLNA services. However as mentioned I need to select each individual vob file that I want to play. I am hoping there is a way to have it automatically play all in order.
Interesting. Every time I try to load a VOB file it just says that it's an unsupported format. I never got around to renaming them .mpeg which I've heard still works. Maybe I'll try it again this evening. Thanks for the heads up!

-- apology up front for the long drawn out story but i am trying to vent a little before i explode.

I got my new 570 the other day from newegg. So the first thing i do on the way home was buy Avatar. I finally get the player all hooked up which was a breeze, wifi and all. I then do the check for a FW update and of course there was one. It downloaded and installed.

I started Avatar everything was going super until about 30mins in then the thing started to stutter and the time line bar would pop up. this lasted for a minute before it finally got unwatchable. leading up to that point i did notice a time or two where the sound did drop out for a split secound.

I jumped on the internet to do i little research. going to lg web site i found another update. If i remember correctly the one that the played updated to was .283 the one lg listed is .288C. so i burned it to a disc and ran that update. I unplugged the player for a few mins and started again. This time i made it almost all the way through to the end I think i have about 20mins left. But again it has started to stall. I did notice more stalling though out the movie maybe once every 10mins but not terrible. towards the end it just stalled and locked up. I could go back a chapter and it would work but as soon as i get to the point the air war is about to start it stall and locks up.

I then put the DVD in and the DVD is just completely glitchy and pix-elated or artifacting. Not sure if that is the correct term, but there are small colored squares all over the screen in a random mess. the sound is there but you only can make every other word out, if that. I tried several DVD all the same result

so any suggestions. Should i call LG or just return it to newegg for a replacement. I am even thinking about getting hit with the 15% restocking fee and getting another brand I am getting a little Leary about this thing. Has anyone every had luck with getting newegg to wave the restocking fee if they where to buy a different product?

thanks guys
Michael

scheetz83, I would definitely exchange it for another one. Avatar was one of the movies I used to test out the unit. For me it played flawlessly right thru to the end. I did not experience any of the issues you mentioned. To me it sounds like you have a bad unit.

my yamaha receiver does not do hdmi pass thru so dvd to pana via hdmi and dvd to receiver via optical for sound is the only way to do it.

I'm really torn between getting a wdtv live plus and this LG bd570.
I know for a fact that i will be occasionally watching blu ray movies but most of the time, I will be streaming netflix and playing mkv files from my DLNA capable synology NAS.
question is, can someone confirm with authority that playing mkv files (i understand mkv is a container and the ability of bd570 to play this mkv depends on the codec of the video file) are streamable through bd570?
I have a large BD and regular SD dvd collection that I will rip to my NAS.
Then, I want either the wdtv or lg to stream it to my tv.
this is all I really care about.
occasionally, I would like the device to stream some jpg's and gif's as well...

so what will suit my needs?
I don't care about the $$ delta....I'm indifferent towards it..

I connect bd-570 to Denon avr-2809i and there is no lost at all. About the HD power connection to USB like everyone else said "we should power OFF then unplug" or vise versa. I have no problem with it.
I have seen quite a few problems so far with my player is that ..
1/. Fail to recognize 1 DVD. Work fine with all other players.
2/. Won't turn on seperate .srt subtitle.
3/. Fail to consistently playing home network with 1 AVI video like slow to down load some more before it could continue playing.
4/. After upgrade firmware. When turn it on, no display. I have to leave a disk on then press "Play". Now I can see the LG signal.

Gordita,
I own the BD570 and the WD TV Live Plus. Other than the capability to play Blu-Ray disks, the WD TV Live Plus beats it hands down in every other category. The UI is much faster and more user friendly. It also allows you to play ripped DVD's with menu support. It also does a much better job playing music and photos.

I still think the BD570 is a very nice player and on its own offers a lot of great features for the money. However, if your primary goal is to stream media from a network share, the WD TV Live Plus does a much better job. However, I suspect that your problem streaming MKV files may be a bandwidth issue. My Dad has the BD570 on a wireless 'n' connection and can't stream any MKV files. If he copies the files to a USB drive and connects it directly to the player then the files play with no problems. Both of my players are connected to a hard wired gigabit homerun so I don't have any problems. However, I wasn't able recently to play VOB files on the 570 but I may have to update the firmware.

Also, streaming from a network share as apposed to a DLNA server is the best option to avoid file format issues. Any time you stream using a DLNA server, you are subject to the file format restrictions of the server. Most DLNA servers such as Nero and WMP don't support MKV or m2ts files.

I always got the same thing before I rolled back to a previous firmware that allows VOBs to be played.
To my understanding, the ability to play VOBs has been removed from current firmwares due to legal/copyright issues.

excellent response daytrader. you've saved me from a lot of potential headaches. I've sent you a PM with some additional questions, if you can spare some time!
Thanks again
After a few days with the 570 (and still yet to play a BD) I am very pleased so far with the performance and capabilities of this unit. I have yet to have any issue with the 570 connecting wirelessly to my 'N' router, have had only 1 'rebuffering' during NF playback and the only SDVD I have tried played flawlessly, minus the fact that during the previews in the beginning I can't by-pass and for some reason I lose lip sync when the campaign for not smoking comes on, but then returns for the actual movie. I presume this is a compatibility issue with the disc since when I play the disc on my A35 HD DVD player, there is no problem at all, lip sync is never lost.

Last night I finally looked into, and signed up for Pandora Internet Radio and I absolutely love it! This may be the one feature I needed to get back into music again.

The only other issue I have, and it is a semi-important issue, is the remote function. At first I thought the intermittent command reception was due to the factory remote, but after I programmed my Harmony remote, while the problem improved, it still was flakey. However, once I tried the remote with the 'door' on the 570 opened, the unit had no problem receiving each and every command. No longer does the remote need to be pointed directly at the 570 but then the aesthetic value of the 570 goes way down as does the protection from dust/dirt getting into the disc drive.

But at the end of the day, I feel that I got my monies worth with the 570, certainly better than the Toshiba BDX2700 that I first had as there are more than twice the amount of apps the 570 has, and there have been multiple complaints of the Toshiba models "locking up" requiring a reset before operating again. So I feel that buying this open box 570 was the right thing for me.
