Do a speed test? http://www.speedtest.net/ Maybe some network issues? I would defiantly update the firmware asap, should give you 1 or 2 more netcast channels, DviX TV and maybe Youtube? Not sure when that came out, as well as BD compatibility updates.

I have run a speedtest (speakeasy0 a few times and have never seen it drop below 12mb while running the test and it always averages out at about 15mb.

My home network is completely gigabit. I have a gigabit router, network switch and everything is hardwired on cat6

Obviously I need to try and update the firmware, which in all honestly should have been the first thing that I did. Problem is that every time I am using the player, it is to watch a movie or netflix with my wife and the last thing I want to do is start updating firmware only to have a problem. The wife rarely understands or appreciates technology issues.

I assume that this is a setting in the menu. I will give this a try too.

Assuming you've crossed that barrier (e.g.: created a smaller FAT32 partition), read the many posts above that say that the 550 doesn't play videos from a usb hard drive (and, confusingly, some that say it does!)

The 570 surely does, though formats such as mkv, divx, and avi would appear from the posts here to be pretty iffy. I use plain-ol-mpeg (1 and 2) and... LG (Life is Good). Try a simple .mpg on your 550, see what happens, and let us know.

I was able to make my 2TB formatted to FAT32 - and the drive loads onto the 550, I put some music on it, to make sure that the machine was reading the HDD - it was there when I plugged into the USB, I listened to a few songs to be sure, and then unmounted the HDD and plugged back into my macbook and put movies onto it.. then plugged back into the 550.. only the music showed up.

I'll try plan-ol-mpeg's when I get home tonight.
I really appreciate the help

if LG was competent enough to include a quality hdmi cable in the box, they could avoid having to deal with 1000's of returned units. Not everyone is going to have a bunch of hdmi cables at home to switch around. good luck to LG

There are seemingly different bd550 models on the market. The US models probably do not play back video files via USB, while European models do.

Best regards, maris

Could your provider be throttling your connection when streaming video?

I just got my BD570 few weeks ago at Best Buy, and from what I can tell it won't show captions on Netflix streaming, nor will it do 5.1 sound. Can anyone confirm this? or am I just watching the wrong movies?

Thanks.
Confirmed on all streaming players.

Are you saying that Netflix cannot stream 5.1 sound? Or streaming players cannot do 5.1 sound?

For me, would be one more reason not to join Netflix Canada

I played my 2nd movie yesterday. "Blue thunder" which is got form the library, it was playing fine for a while and then i had to pause it to attend to my kids. Then when i resumed it started giving problems like every few seconds or so it wold stop and then play. Tried all kinds of things from switching off the player and on, changing the out put display from 1080i to 1080p, changing to 60 hz. None of it made any improvements. I have two more blue rays to test, at this point i am totally frustrated, i have the latest updates from LG for the firm ware. please let me know what i am missing.

I resumed the same movie from Netflix it plays fine, and it also connects thru home link to my pc fine and plays anything i want. Just the BD disks it has issues with !!!!!!!!

RGds

Today i tried by connecting the player through a normal video cable instead of HDMI. Surprisingly it played fine for a long time and then it started the same issues again. No luck there.

Now i have connected the HDMI cable back but connecting to a different hdmi port on tv, will try that out tonight to see how it works.

Tried to play some dvds and i am getting Error and the disc is getting ejected. Tried two different disks 1) Transformers 2) Ice Age. for both discs the player did not even recognize the disk, just said error and ejected the disk !! any help on this is appreciated.

I am beginning to wonder do we have really go thru so much trouble, trial and error to make a Blue ray player work !! ? but this player has such good ratings, wonder what i am doing wrong.

Yes we are saying it is not possible at this time on any player, if you want 5.1 then you need to use Vudu HDX.
Netflix does provide CC on some shows when viewed on a PC, soft subtitles are trickier because LG uses Roku's API which doesn't support subtitles at this time.

I thought the PS3 was doing (or going to do soon) 5.1 on Netflix?

Edit: Confirmed here along with subtitle support for some titles.

What that means is the PS3 is 1080p/5.1 ready, for the time being it will scale and matrix 720p/2.0. AFAIK there's no content from Netflix in 1080p/5.1 yet.

Do you have the latest firmware on your player? I believe it's 323C.

Sometimes, even though you can't see the defects, disks can be dirty, scratched, etc, that can prevent them from playing properly. You can try to clean the disks and see if that helps.

Brand new bd 550 discs so far play ok. Vudu works, passed HDX test. Divxtv works fine, buffers every once in awhile but not a problem. But Netflix some movies play fine but others will load, play a few seconds and then bd 550 shuts down , off , ... Anybody ?

I have problems connecting to wifi after upgrading to 323C firmware. It used to work before, but now it keeps asking for WEP password and fails to connect. I did not change anything in my network and other devices work fine, only BD570 does not. Anyone experienced the same problem? Can I rollback the firmware to the previous version?

This is your first one correct? (you haven't already exchanged it) The LG BD5XX's are pretty good players, yes with a few somewhat minor issues that should have been addressed by now. My BD550 has been running fine for the most part, Netflix, Vudu and all, a couple BD's (Toy Story 3 and something else?) didn't like the 24Hz setting, but that's about it. I Think you just happened to get a dud, exchange it for another, but do give up on it yet.

I have had some Netflix content in Dolby Pro Logic, so if your receivers have that setting, give it a try, at least its some form of multi channel surround. It makes sense because Pro Logic is encoded into the two channel stereo signal, for the stuff that's not even in Pro Logic, I use a tweaked Studio setting on my Onkyo that sounds pretty good.

Have you updated to the latest firmware? If not give that a try, you might have gotten a dud as well. Sorry...

It's quite simple, download MKVToolnix 4.0.0 (or the newest 4.3.0 or something but that version has header compression on by default and you have to turn it every time you use the program). Start the program mkvmerge GUI, load the particular mkv file into it by clicking on the 'add' button. Then click on the 'start muxing' button. It will create a new file with a (1) suffix in the filename. That's it.

When you use version 4.3.0, make sure to set compression to 'none' in the format specific options tab for every stream listed in the main window (audio, video).

I'm also looking for a "write up" and how to make my existing MKV files (made with MakeMKV) play on my BD570 like they do on the WD HD Live.
The instructions above seem clear enough. I assume this converts the container to something the BD570 likes. Is there any loss in quality?

Also, for any new MKVs I'm going to create, is there something that can be done at the time the DVD is ripped to avoid the conversion step?

P.S. Using 4.40 of mkvmerge. In the options for the program, there is a "Disable header removal compression for audio and video tracks by default", which I checked. On the Format Specific tab, I see nothing related to compression, but in the Extra Options tab, I see compression and it is set to none. Still, the BD570 says the format is not supported playnig the converted MKV file.

I got my BD 570 just a week ago. I was watching The Half Blood Prince in Blu-Ray and need to stope it at the middle. When I restarted the player, it started playing the movie from the beginning, not from the scene where it was stopped. I tried a couple of other Blu-Ray Disks same thing happened. Is it normal?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

It depends on how the BluRay disc was authored. On a disc that resumes where you left off, you should see the pause and stop icon briefly on the home screen when you hit stop once while the movie is playing. If you hit stop again the disc will not resume and will restart when you try to play it again.
Also, some discs will allow you to place a bookmark at a particular scene. To use this function you will need to have a flash or hard drive attached to the USB port.

I didn't see much of this sort of information anywhere else on the web, so I figured I'd post it here so people might be able to find the answer if they themselves were asking the same question.

I had originally posted a question (details are in this thread as well) about whether it's possible for any Wi-Fi enabled devices to recognize an external hard drive connected via USB to an Airport Extreme Base Station. The answer, as defined in that thread, is yes. The next questions were whether the BD-570 would recognize the HD if it was formatted as HFS+, as this is not specified anywhere in LG's documentation and a thread by davige suggested that the drive must be formatted FAT32 (or 16). In a PM, he did say that HFS+ was supported, however, and on this information I purchased a BD-570 a few days ago. I'm happy to report that the 570 recognizes the external hard drive I have connected, which is formatter HFS+, and has played all the files that I've tried to play so far: Top Gear (series 3, avi files; season 15, mkv files); mkv videos; and mp4 videos. I think quality was a little degraded compared to hooking up my computer and outputting content to the TV directly, but given how far I sit (15' from a 46" set), I don't think the difference is noticeable. At closer distances, there may be some degradation.

I also ran into some issues when playing Planet Earth ("Pole to Pole") during the bird migration scenes -- I don't think the wireless network could handle that much data.

Either way, I'm pleased that I no longer need to bring my laptop to the TV to play video files on the external HD -- this also means I can use the laptop for other things while playing the file.

I just bought this unit, got the WiFi set up and then updated to the 323C firmware. I was able to access AccuWeather, the new Divx channel, etc., so it seems my connectivity was not impacted (I was not asked for my WEP password again). Just a data point for you.

That is incorrect the ps3 does do Netflix with D.D. 5.1 and 1080P, it is only on a few titles and this is only available with the PS3 at this time. I have a ps3 upstairs and just watched The Last Boyscout with DD 5.1, they do show which movies are 5.1 but do show which are 1080p. I am sure that other players will start including it in the next year but who knows if current players will ever be updated to it or if we will need to buy new players.
