Official LG BD550/BD560/BD570/BD590 Owners Thread - Page 23

Noticed the firmware update is ava to stream to the player as of last night. I haven't had the chapter skipping problem others have experienced with the BD "Up" (was always viewing at 1080i/60), although the disc freezes constantly when I try to view the movie with the enhanced video commentary. mkv files have locked up on occasion as well, but not consistently at the 40 min mark as others have experienced.

So I'm sorta wary of doing the upgrade if it is not reversible. I haven't seen the original firmware anywhere to downgrade it if this new firmware screws up something else. Can folks confirm mkv playback and whether it has been impacted +/- by this new firmware? Could someone also please check the Up BD with the enhanced video commentary?

Thanks in advance. . .

Well going to exchange my 590 for another. It works fine except for the error message that keeps popping up The device cannot be operated. Please check the connection. CEC100. I thought maybe it might be my onkyo causing the issue but connected player directly to the plasma and got the same message. Curiously my wife said she got the same message when she just turned the plasma on without the blu ray or onkyo on. I hope it is just this player. LG wanted me to send it in to be looked at. Never had an issue with my bd 390. Other than the main menu of the 590 it worked well on streaming and playig discs. Up did not skip at all. Picks up network well and can play music off computer fine.

ok exchanged unit and still get that error message. It appears to be upon powering on, powering off and when the screen changes from one activity to the next. It then disappears. Once I am in netflix or VUDU it does not appear to give me the error message. Very strange I wonder if its really an issue with the pioneer plasma and the HDMI connection with the player. I have an LG plasma upstairs that i can try it on and see if get the same message which would definately mean it is an LG issue. If not will call Pioneer.

The error is probably referring to the CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) feature of HDMI, which allows one piece of gear to control another. (E.g., turning off TV automatically turns off blu-ray, etc.) Manufacturers refer to it with different names. Pioneer calls it KuroLink. LG says SimpLink. Onkyo calls it RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI). Try turning it off on all your devices.

I will give that a shot later. I have turned it off on the TV and onkyo seperatly but never together. Will this have an effect on using my harmony remote to control all the components? Also why would this be a problem with the 590 but not the 390. I am going to try and hook it to a diiferent tv and see what happens. So would a firmware update correct this and if so would it be from LG's end or Pioneer which does not make tv anymore.

Hooked up 590 to my lG plasma upstairs and no error message. It did recognize plaayer with simple link. So it appears to be an issue with the Pioneer plasma and the LG. Even when going thru Onkyo receiver get error. I turned of HDMI control on both plasma and receiver but still get error. It would appear that LG has HDMI control turned on in the player but no way to access it to turn it off. I am going to call LG again just to let them know but doubt anything will be done. Its amazing that the 390 had no issues yet this has an issue. Will also call pioneer and ask them if it can be fixed.

i absolutely love my 570 things works great bottom-line not on problem with it.
that being said convinced my brother to get one and he has problems with his. it keeps dropping his connection to his router. i read through this entire thread but dont really see a remedy or anything to tell him to do.

how do you check when it was manufactured? is there a problem with Jan builds?

or could it be his router not working with the unit?

thanks for any help!

it's probably a router issue, if you do a search on this thread with the keyword "router", there are a bunch of people with routers dropping connections, etc. i have a jan build and other than the skipping issue at 24Hz which was fixed by the latest firmware, everything works well. i have an ATT Uverse 2Wire router connected wirelessly.

I read on cnet that the 570 won't stream MKV. I have some x264 files...Will the 570 work with TVersity to stream those?

My 570 works great with Tversity and I can stream .MKV files. I would like to upgrade Tversity so that I can stream hulu but don't want to pay till I'm sure it will work !

Nice. I often download missed shows via utorrent. I have a bunch of x264 files of a show that play great on my PC, but want to stream them to my HT. I'm hoping the 570 will solve my dilemma.

Thanks for trying to help me! I did the search "router" but didnt really find anything to try to fix the issue.

using a netgear N router and the connection drops. what can we do to have it not drop?

thanks

I wouldn't think so. Should be more predictable with CEC off.

I'm sure this could be fixed with a firmware update. LG and Pioneer are likely to blame each other, though. And, as you say, Pio won't be doing any more updates.

This link may help to turn off KuroLink. Do you still get the message when there's a disk in the player? You can try hooking up the LG to the Pio via a non-HDMI input, just to verify CEC is at fault, but all signs point to yes.

I picked up the 550 model last night to replace my old DVD player. The device I replaced was cheaper and could play .avi files straight off the USB flash drive. Imagine my surprise when I found out LG had nerfed their new BluRay player so it couldn't do something an older, less advanced player could! Turning off the ability to playback certain filetypes, (and make no mistake, it is turned off; the movie icon has a USB option. How stupid!) is the kind of behavior that will turn me off to this brand for quite a while. Unless there is a firmware upgrade to fix this issue before I unplug what should have been my new favorite toy to return it, it's prettymuch gone.

hello guy,
just got a bd570c and while all setup was a breeze, wifi was so easy and all, but when i try to play mkv's from the computer through network the bluray either freezes or restarts... any idea whats is causing that?
btw, as soon as the player went online it updated twice

The 570 cannot stream MKVs through the network. Try a flash drive and see if it works then.

quite a few users mentioned that mkv streaming was fine on the 570...
edit: and the same thing happens with avi's

570 plays mkv files via streaming. i have tried with tversity and the nero media server shipped along with the 570. Try updating your firmware.

I've never tried with TVersity, but I can't get it to play MKVs via a share drive on the network. The CNet review mentioned as well that it can't stream MKVs as well. I assume with extra software on the PC side perhaps it can, but again with just a shared drive it has never worked for me.
Anyone have some example tools/formats they have used that allow the 570 to fast foward and rewind when going against a shared drive (i.e. not using TVersity or another DLNA server)?

I concur with other posters that MKV (created via MakeMKV) will not work from a shared drive (it did work streaming via TVersity, but FF/RW were not reliable).

I have ripped DVDs with DVDShrink (main movie only no separate AUDIO/VIDEO folders) and can play via a shared drive, but FF/RW are not supported (get the pop-up icon with a line through it when I press any of the FF/RW or chapter skip buttons).

firmware is latest as of 4/13/2010.

isorry if it was mentioned, i am using upnp software, tried all 3: nero media, tversity and ps3mediaserver(used that one on the xbox). it doesnt play mks or avi's or any video format, the player just freezes or turns off, the software is updated with latest firmware(CONFIRMED)
i might go back and exchange it.
oh, and the main menun is so slow, like a slideshow almost, tried different hdmi cables one from monoprice($5) and one that was offered when i bought my tv(retail for $70)

For what it's worth, I noticed that the latest firmware allowed me to fast forward / rewind on MP4s streamed from a shared drive. I'm pretty sure I wasn't able to do that before. I had to let the video play for a few seconds, presumably to allow some buffer to fill before it would work.

VOBs and other formats stil don't work for me for FF / RW, and no form of chapter skipping has worked.
ok, now im going crazy. just replaced the bd570 with another unit. previous couldnt read avi's or mkv's, with new one, i am able to read avi's but not mkv's through network using 3 different dlna services... getting frustrating.
anybody has any idea?

I've tried everything I can think of, and I can't get TVersity to stream Hulu to my 570. The menu/folder structure displays fine, but I always get a "Network Congestion" error when I try to play anything from Hulu.

I can play files off my drive and Youtube through TVersity - just not Hulu.

Playon also chokes, but it just hangs.

Does anyone have any luck with Hulu and the 570?

Thanks,
-Jim

I've streamed Hulu successfully through TVersity to my 570, wirelessly even, although I haven't done it in the last couple of weeks. I'll try it again later and see if I get any issues. The only thing that I can't seem to get to work is the Hulu playlist.

Haven't tried MKV files unfortunately. So I can't really answer that question.
