This is the beauty of large format transferred to video. Fine grain structure and detail i'm seeing. Can't wait to watch this weekend.

Agree. I have the laserdisc, and had to wait 20 years for a better release! I like how they kept the directionality for the music segments. This is worth every penny. Now only one more release (Jurassic Park), and I can sell my laserdisc player.

BTW, this is the only movie where I have to buy a screen specifically for it. The image is too tall for a 2.35, and way too short for a 1.85, so it looks like I have to custom order a 2.20. If only I can get roll-ups with masking.

Just posted some more screenshots here:

The Sound of Music - Screenshot gallery

This is a truly remarkable release that puts 'efforts' like BTTF to shame.

Great screenshots! I watched Toy Story 3 last night, so I only had a chance to scan through the disc, but what I saw truly blew me away! There is something magical about 70mm films and this one is no exception. Just a gorgeous transfer that must be seen to be believed!

Robert A. Harris was right....I only meant to preview a few minutes of the BD last ev'g, but the A/V presentation (and the content) was so hypnotic & potent (not unlike trying to avert one's gaze from Medusa) that I ended up watching the first half til' the intermission

Again, here's RAH's thoughts on TSOM...

I'm 52 years old. At various times in my life, I've had a knife pulled on me, I've been shot at, I've crashed a small airplane, I've been decked (multiple times) by sucker punches from jealous boyfriends and I've had cancer surgery that removed a significant portion of my innards.

By now, I should be pretty damn tough.

So why does this movie make me misty-eyed at least a dozen times? I'm almost afraid to watch it with other people because I'm afraid I'll start crying during that scene when the captain first hears the children singing.

This is a truly great disc. It may be the most film-like presentation I've yet seen on home video.

Just got it! It is pretty nice. There is definitely a lot of grain in many scenes. The average bitrate is 22Mbps but some scenes are as high as 32.4Mbps. The 2.20:1 aspect ratio is really interesting. The sound volume level is lower than most newer movies. This brings back so many memories. Enjoy guys.

Funny though, that the opening of the film always reminds me of 'The Shining'.

Kinda hard to pick screens since pretty much every shot looks amazing, but here's some anyway:

Blu-ray | HDTV (upscaled I think)

Watched this today and it looks great!

Relieved to know that I'm not the only one who's experienced this involuntary physiological response....except I actually have tears streaming down my cheeks. That's one benefit of watching this on a front pj setup -- no one can see u tear up

+1 on the 'film-like' comment....this is hands-down my favorite 4K catalog release so far -- at least until 'LOA' arrives

That 4th screenshot in eric.exe's post is sensational looking. Check out the minute detail on the wall behind the paintings.

1930's Austria certainly had some modern architecture.

Love the screenshots. I need to get this. There's hope for Patton yet
And IMO it pretty much confirms that all the talk about Baraka suffering from an 8K scan or whatever was complete bunk. This film is 30 years older and, dare i say, reveals finer detail and texture.

I bought the Target Special Edition with the free 24pp. book and the discs in slots, rather than the standard blue Blu-Ray case. I was afraid the packaging wouldn't be the best for the discs, and I was right - they slide out too easily. Oh, well....

Coupons.com w/$2 coupon made it $17.99.

It looks quite nice - probably as good as people say; I can't wait to get a new TV in the next few months that will really show off this Blu-Ray as well as my other movies and TV.

Just watched The Sound of Music. There were three audible "wows"....... before the first screen credits were through rolling! They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

And for all you sniveling he-men out there..... man up! Ah, excuse me for a second, while I blow my nose. Now where is that darn handkerchief.......

What an absolute travesty, they totally missed the director's intent and the original look of the film. They are perpetuating old, inaccurate, color balances that are meant for ancient CRTs and it obviously was supposed to look like this:

...

Its a beautiful transfer, look at all of that texture, color, and fidelity! Love it.

48 year old, raised in projects with 4 brothers & 20 year Air Force vet......I weep like a baby at that scene every time & my kids take great pleasure in pointing out that fact :-)

Screens look amazing... One small thing though.. The contrast appears to be boosted a bit... If you look at the 7th pic down (boy holding ball), if you look to the right of that, there are some trees that appear to have some black crush effect.... Minor gripe, but figured I'd mention it

Uhh, yeah...right. Excellent work, Clouseau. In fact, I think I'll return my copy tomorrow. This outrage will not stand!

I've seen shadow details get clipped many times and I have no idea what stumlad is talking about.

Looks pretty good for its age. Of course we can do better in the future but that is for another day I suppose. No doubt this is on the whole a bit better than GWTW imo. I can only wonder what this will look like lossless with uncompressed color. It boggles my mind. I would think it would almost be as if you were watching them through a very clear window in your home.

Baraka, South Pacific and The Sound of Music were all 8k scans from wetgate IP's and they were all done by Fotokem. From what I can see on the Blu-Rays they are constantly improving on their previous work and I applaud them for it.

So you don't see it in that pic when comparing to the "HDTV" caps? Just to be defensive, I'm not criticizing this relase.. in fact, based on the screens, it's been purchased and I'm awaiting delivery... I was just pointing out that minor thing... but.. it is there
post #116 of 180
Great transfer! My only small gripe is how dark it was...I had to go to two Targets to find this title. First one sold out of their `exclusive' set in 20 minutes!

The word "grain" gets used a lot on this site. One poster above says, "There is definitely a lot of grain in many scenes." Ralph Pott's review today says, "Grain is intact across the board." Yet I've also heard that 70MM film has very little grain or perhaps what grain may be there is beyond the resolution of 1080p TVs. So are people really seeing grain or is it something else in the film texture that they are misinterpreting as grain? Can a Blu-ray appear "film-like" without grain?
Of course you can see grain in 70mm film on Blu-ray actually Baraka didn't have
very good encoding and the grain doesn't really resolve I actually think Baraka could have been done much better but anyway that is neither here nor there.
So yes it is grain we are seeing and if the movie was filmed with film there should be grain present so if the movie was shot on film and shows no grain it has been tampered with and is ugly. Movies shot on HD cameras can have no grain and so can CGI movies. Grain is where the Silver grains were present in the film and received enough photons and so grain is inherent
to film.
