My mother is seeking to add a TV to her sewing room to watch TV/DVD/maybe Blue rays while sewing. I am in charge of purchase and wall mounting!

Size: 26-29inch
Budget: $250-$500. Less expensive is better.
Use: TV, DVD, netflix. Possibly may install blue ray player as well.
Room: Upstairs bedroom of midwestern house. One window. Will wall mount and have single person sitting 5-10 feet away.
What is important: Picture quality, sharpness, easy to wall mount. Also plan to have internet hookup so she can watch netflix movies downloaded from her computer. Looking for good bang for the buck.
Not important: No video games, no 3D.

I used this forum extensively when researching the purchase of my Samsung LN52A650 a few years ago--any advice on the current project would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Super- thanks for the reply. I'll now go reading about those TV's as a place to start. (Cool screen name, too- EscapeVelocity) And if anyone else has further suggestions, I'll look there as well.

As per the OP:

1. Budget:
$0-$2000, no 3D (not that it's in this price range anyways :P)

2. Seating distance
About 10', though it should be just as nice from 2' away as I'm visually impaired and sit close to the screen

3. Size/placement limitations
50-60", it's sitting on a long glass top dresser. No real limitations as there's nothing above the dresser.

4. Uses and sources
Uses will be movies, tv, and gaming. Xbox 360 or PS3, Apple TV or Boxee Box, etc. No HD cable/sat in the near future as far as I know.

5. Room lighting
The dresser happens to sit next to a large window, it's a standard bedroom window width wise, but double the height. It does have drapes over it but they don't completely block out all light. They definitely cut it down by 50-60% though.

It's more size then anything, with my vision we wanted to get something for the bedroom that I can actualy see without having to lie at the edge of the bed.

Yes some people would say "you're crazy" for putting a big TV in the bedroom like that, but we've got a 82" front projection setup in the living room, and the girlfriend has already approved the size stating "If we're going to bother putting a big TV in here, I want at least 50-55"".

Thanks guys and gals!

Looking into buying a new LCD HDTV and I'd really appreciate some recommendations/insight!

Budget - $800 max.
Size/placement limitations - No smaller than 46"
Uses and sources - Cable (HD) via HDMI, HTPC
Room lighting - Minimal.
Important: 1:1 Pixel Mapping in 1080p via HDMI for my HTPC, good colors/blacks/etc.
Prefer: I would prefer 120 Hz and support for 1080p24 input.

This is what I'm looking at now (Samsung LN46C630) but I'd appreciate any other advice/input! http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN46C6.../dp/B0036WT3RA

The LG is a good choice, and relatively inexpensive. But the 2 above will have better blacks and overall Picture Quality. Soap Opera Effect is caused by Frame Interpolation which can be toned down or turned off. I prefer Frame Interpolation myself.

Thank you Escape.

Wow I guess i'm just shocked that Vizio is such a contender nowadays. Last time I was in the market for a TV i felt like Vizio was real low end.

Is the c630 much better than the c6400? Because it isn't LED and I was rather impressed with the blacks. I haven't seen the c630 in person. Is it equally as good? I know its something like 100,000 vs 4,000,000 to 1.

With any of these tvs do I have to worry about this lottery thing? I guess if i get it from costco i can open and check the box before purchase if they let me. How do I check which panel it is?

Last thought... is it worth waiting for the 2011 line of tvs to come out? If I am able to wait that long.

Thank you very much for your replies.

It looks like the Sony KDL-40EX600 LED-LCD TV will just fit into my cabinet (with 1/16" to spare). This is a breakthrough in my search, as I thought I was going to be stuck with a 37" TV. Does Sony have the narrowest 40" TV on the market? I only have 37.5" wide slot to put the TV in, so it can't be any bigger that that. Most of the 40" sets I found have 38-39" widths. Any recommendations?

Hi All, thanks for the help in advance. I'm looking for a 55-60" LCD for my basement media room that is currently being constructed.

1. Budget: $2-$2.5k

2. Seating Distance: 7-8ft

3. Size/Placement: 55-60", wall mounted

4. Sources: HD Direct TV, PS3 for gaming and bluray, Xbox, Wii, streaming HD movies via Boxee

5. Room Lighting: Overhead recessed lighting as well as a few lamps, no big windows.

Right now I've kind of narrowed my search to the Samsung un55c6900/8000 (they're selling for roughly the same price online) and the Sony 60ex700/55nx800 (a local BB has the 55nx800 for under $2k). My girlfriend doesn't like the silver/titanium bezel on the Samsung 8000 series, otherwise I think that would be my choice. We're not actively looking for a 3D set, but with the prices nearly identical to the 2D, we're considering it.

Budget: $2000, but I'd like to go less than $1800
Seating Distance: 7-9ft
Size: 55", no placement limitations
Uses and sources: In order of importance
1. Gaming (mainly rhythm games like Rock Band, so input lag is a huge deal)
2. Blu-Ray Movies (through a PS3 or dedicated Blu-Ray player)
3. Streaming content
4. Broadcast/cable TV
Room lighting: Bay window above and to the right of the TV which shines fairly bright during the day, about 10 feet away. Otherwise completely artificial lighting. This will change soon as I'm moving in the summer.

Right now I've been leaning strongly towards the Samsung UN55C6800 or UN55C6900, as those were recommended to be good for gaming. However, I want to best TV I can possibly get, and I am willing to wait until late April at the latest to get the best deal.

Any reason the Sony KDL46EX710 doesn't get much mention? I hear a lot of mention for the Vizio XVT3SV, the Sony EX500 and the Samsung C630, but not too much for the EX710.

I know there may be a little bit of a price diff at the 46'' range, but televisioninfo seems to think the EX700(I'm assuming the 710 isn't much diff) is pretty good, while cnet has a less glowing opinion.

How does the EX710 stack up against those?
It suffers from backlight uniformity issues that all Edgle Lit LED sets suffer from.

Check out the HX701 though.
Need help. Think my final 2 choices are the 55hx800 and the un55c8000. Which should I go for? Im assuming the Sony is better for gaming but my main concern is the pq.

Size: 46"
Budget: Around $2000
Use: Watching Hockey, Football, PS3 Games, Xbox 360 and Blu-ray movies
Room: No Direct light, but the room is rather bright. Distance is about 10 feet away.
What is important: Picture quality, sharpness (no big surprise), no ghosting or blurring and able to keep up with fast moving images.
Not important: 3d but if it has it, it doesn't really matter or widgets

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
1. Budget: $800

2. Seating distance: 7-10 feet

3. Size/placement limitations: Going into a cabinet that is 40" wide by 25" tall.

4. Uses and sources:
Time Warner Cable box (can be upgraded to HD)
WDTV (HDMI or Composite)
Panasonic S35 DVD player (Component, Composite or SVideo)
Nintendo Wii
Sony SLVN71 VCR (Composite)

We currently have a 20" CRT and it's just too small to play multi-player Wii games or read subtitles from across the room.

We do have some kids' videos on VCR that we would prefer to continue playing, but I understand that may not be practical.

5. Room lighting
Recessed lighting in the ceiling. The cabinet is in the corner of the room, and on one opposite wall, we have the sliding glass doors to our backyard. Sunlight comes through, but the blinds can be closed.

Budget ~$650-$700. If a really killer deal came around for 750-800, I would consider it, but it'd have to be pretty incredible.

Seating distance ~7ft. I also like to watch from my computer desk, which is ~12ft away.

Size/placement limitations In principle, none. I feel like 40" is too small, but I think that going larger than 46"-47" would be tremendous overkill for the room.

Uses and sources - Xbox 360, whatever the HD set top box Verizon will provide for FiOS, a blu-ray player at some point, perhaps some RCA legacy stuff (PS2, etc.).

The TV will probably be used 70/30 TV+movies/gaming (SSF4, Rock Band). I'm probably not good enough to notice input lag in SSF4 but I can sniff out input lag in Rock Band/GH easily. I know the rhythm games have built-in calibrations, but I think we can all agree it'd be better for those corrections to be minimal.

Room lighting - moderate? The entire south wall of my living room is a sliding glass door, but it's well covered by drapes. I don't like watching TV or movies in total darkness (I know, I suck) so it's likely at least one incandescent light's gonna be on. That bias lighting stuff linked to in the first post is neato, though.

TVs I've considered so far:

-Sony 46EX500 - I suppose this would need to fall in price (I'd be happy paying 650-700 for it, not 800-900 though). Loved the look of this TV in stores. As I mentioned above I don't think a 40" would be enough.

-LG 47LD520 - The price is right. I'm sure I've seen it in stores, but I don't remember much about it

-Any number of Vizio TVs, as they seem to offer really great features at a good price, e.g. M470NV, E470VA, M420VT, SV422XVT. I've got concerns about the input lag, though.

-Panasonic TC-P(42|46)(G|GT)25 - Wrong forum, I know, please forgive me! Just wanted to mention the 42" GT25 has managed to sink into my price range and is an appealing option on the table for me.

I would stay away from the Vizio E470VA. I returned mine because of problems. I picked up the Samsung UN46C5000QF and am happy so far. It is a little over your budget at around $900.

Just an update here, in case it helps anyone

I went to a store to look at TV's. I found that it's difficult to compare or pick the best image quality when they are not playing the same signal, the signal is not the highest quality possible (e.g., BluRay), and all (or none) of the models that you want to see are not there. But I also understand that it would be impractically expensive for any store to do all that. Anyways.

The one TV that made me say wow! was a Samsung UN65C6500 playing a BluRay disc. Very impressive. It was the only one playing a BluRay disc, so it had the upper hand, I guess. But it's almost double my budget, so I'll stick to 60 TV's. The quite helpful guy at the store told me that the Samsung UN60C6300 should have, basically, the same picture quality. (True?) So that's a contender. We looked at a smaller 46C6500, which supposedly, would also be very similar to the UN60C6300 and it looked very good. Not as good as the UN65C6500 but it wasn't playing a BluRay disc, so that doesn't tell me too much.

There was a Sony EX700 which seemed a bit fuzzy. A Sharp 60LE810UN was OK, maybe a teeny bit better than the Sony but not as good as the Samsung. Although the Sony and Sharp were playing (HD?) TV feeds, not a BluRay disc, so it's also not much of a comparison. Anyways, in case this info helps anyone else out there.

It would be great if you folks could give me some directions to start looking in (and what to avoid or is not needed).

Size: 60 or larger
Budget: about $2500 but less would be great (of course)
Use: DVD's and BluRay only, about 200 hours per year
Room: No direct light. We'll sit about 14 feet from the TV

TV's tend to last for several years, right? Apparently, 4 years of use from our projector (650 hours total) is about typical.

Thanks, in advance, for the help!

Look for thin bezels. Others will probably fit the bill. I think that the Sony EX400 and EX500 have the same bezel as the EX600.

I recommend the EX500 over the EX600 (and the EX400)

Well I thought I was done with TVs for a while haha. I posted a "help me" thread in here about 6 weeks or so ago (thanks to Escape, Andrew and others who helped me out). I finally got burned out and decided to not get anything (not to mention tvs went off sale).

Anyway, the Sony 55ex710 is back on sale (at least at one major store). My local Costco will be getting some more Vizio XVT553SVs in tomorow. They are a couple of hundred $ more. I can get either or sit out the '10s. I haven't been able to see the Vizio much. I do like the 710 I must say. I never saw (in the showroom) the horrid off-angle views some have experienced.

Anyway, quick reccos? I know the Viz has the advantage with blacks and has local dimming. I also know that some view Sony as more reputable. Viz has built in wifi, Sony does not. Anyway, need to make a decision this week. Thanks guys!

Samsung C650, C650
Sony EX500

Vizio XVT**3SV, XVT**4SV, E320VL, E420VL, E470VL, plus the VA series
Panasonic 1080p sets
Sanyo 46" 47" 52" & 55"

The budget buyers list.

1. Budget: under $1200
2. Seating Distance: ~8 ft
3. Size/Placement: at least 42", on a stand
4. Source: HD Insight Digital Cable, PS3, Xbox360
5. Room Lighting: large window directly across the room from the tv. Sun does not set directly into the window tho, but still results in plenty of light, some glare (when open. i have some quality shades tho)

I am a heavy gamer. Plenty of time on ps3 or xbox. watch a ton of sports (nhl, nfl, mlb) and espn is routinely left on overnight.
With the window placement, id assume plasma would be out with the amount of glare. Mostly as of now im looking at the vizio xvt423sv. are there plasmas i should look at? any other recommendations? thanks!
Budget: $450 or less (Preferrably less)
Seating Distance: 2-4.5 ft
Size/Placement: 32" on a desk
Main Source(s): PC and XBox 360

-Will be used as a PC monitor mainly, so how text looks is really important. TV is over the internet, and movies are mostly from a hard drive, so I'm really looking for stellar performance (for the price) in the PC area. Don't game much on the PC, do most gaming on the XBOX 360.

-Main looks at the moment are:
Toshiba 32E200U (New)
LG 32LE5300 (Open box deal)
LG 32LD450

Any other recommendations? Any opinions on the sets mentioned above? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Thanks for the Sony 55EX500 recommendation, Escape Velocity. I was all but sure that I was going to go with the Vizio XVT553, but due to my hesitation towards LEDs (even though the Vizio appears to be a really nice LED) you threw the Sony into the mix for me and when it went on sale for less than $1400 I snatched one after a good deal of research. I was able to calibrate this past weekend and thus far it is a fantastic television. With the money I saved on the set I was able to grab some other tech goodies.

Anyway, I highly recommend considering the Sony if anyone is looking for a 55". So far, so good.

Budget: $1200 or less
Seating Distance: 6-10 ft
Size/Placement: 40+ on a table

Hello. I am looking for a TV that I can stream video content from the internet. I will also be using it to play video games and watch movies.

Thanks.

Budget: 650-750
Seating Distance: 7-9ft
Size: 40-46 looking at these 2 sets here: LG 42LD550 and Samsung LN40C630
Uses and sources:
1. Gaming: 360 via hdmi, ps3 via hdmi, also input lag shouldnt be much of a problem as use my 23 asus for fps, but i would want to use my new tv for rockband
2. Movies: HD streamed from PC directly connected via hdmi using XBMC and PS3 for blu ray discs
3. cable i dont watch much of it so not a big deal
Room lightingne window so its usually dark/darker

those are the 2 tv's ive been looking but if anyone has suggestions please let me know. thanks.

1. Budget:$1000 Max
2. Seating distance4-6 feet
3. Size/placement limitations40"-50", really prefer 47+ unless it's a really great tv
4. Uses and sources Gaming on both PS3/360. Blu-ray, and DVD watching. No cable TV in this room. Will hook up my Sony HTCT100 soundbar/sub to it.
5. Room lighting Small 8x10 room, middle of my house with one window. I don't have any way to control lighting other than keeping the curtains closed, lol.

It appears that the non-LED bezels are bigger. The EX500 has a 39 1/8" width (per Sony website). The EX600 has a 37.5" width (per specs, and measured myself in store).
I saw an article about an upcoming Samsung release that will have really small bezels... anyone know about those units?

hi, I am searching for a 37-42" TV, which will be used as monitor of my pc. I'll use it for everything I do in pc. I do not play Games much; but I want a low input lag model. Since I will use it for internet and office applications I want LCD. Plasma would be a problem. I won't be buying another one for at least 5 years. (My 22" lcd monitor is +5 years old) So I also think about 3d TV's. I found LG 42LX6500 as 3d TV; but could not find any info about its input lag. Some lag is not a problem for me. I'm not a hardcore player. As I learned, around 30ms, everything is ok. So I need a LCD which has at max around 30ms lag, and preferably has 3d feature. (As long as our graphics card can do it, with all 3d TVs we can send 3d signal from pc can't we?) I am in Europe, so some models are different here. But Can you help me out?
After reading through this thread it looks like it's coming down the the below choices for me with cost not being an issue.

All types of usage. PS3 - gaming, DVD/Bluray, Netflix. TV - HD & SD, a lot of hockey.

PQ would likely be my top requirement.

Sony 46EX500
Samsung LN46C630 (how noticeable is gaming lag?)
Vizio XVT473SV (black level/local dimming issues?)

Thanks is advance for any replies and thanks for all the posts (especially from EscapeVelocity) leading up to this.
