3. Size/placement limitations - No real limitations other than the power cord being long enough.
4. Uses and sources - Watching TV. No DVD/Blu-Ray player hooked up currently.
5. Room lighting - Mostly dark.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Moderate to dark lighting would normally equal a Panasonic or Samsung plasma. But since this is an LCD forum, and you have a decent budget, then you may want to list the LCD's you are interested in because i don't imagine many of us knowing what they carry offhand. Here are links to Costco's and Sam's club.

With that budget, and especially that far viewing distance, i would recommend a 50" minimum, a 55" would be better imho. Even though it's a bedroom, TV's look small from 14ft away.

I would also check store return policies, i think Costco adds an additional 1 year to the MFR warranty (?)

The "46D550" would be in the model number. In North America it is the LN46D550, in the EU it is the LE46D550, and it was a good recommendation since the TV has great image quality in it's class. That model is a highly rated one in these forums.

1. Budget - $1000 (first TV purchase and more than this seems a lot to me)
2. Seating distance - Main TV in living room. 14 feet
3. Size/placement limitations - No real limitations
4. Uses and sources - Watching Movies and TV. I do not watch sports and I do not a gamer
5. Room lighting - Have 8 50W halogen recessed lights in 21X14 room. Usually only have 4 of them on so not that well lit. Good amount of light during the day with 3 windows.

In the future I would like to try giving up cable. I plan to do this with a combination of OTA (with some kind of DVR), streaming services (currently only signed up with Netflix) and playing video files I have (USB or streaming).

I currently have narrowed it down to two TV's. The Sony KDL46EX523 for $670 (basically same as KDL46EX520 and KDL46EX523) or the Samsung UN46D6000 for $820. Here is what I think I know.

Sony
- Can do Skype
- On screen OTA tv guide
- Is only a 60Hz set but apparently does a good job of signal processing and blur is not a big problem
- Can play very limited video file types over DNLA (no .mkv)

Samsung
- 120Hz set
- Can play .mkv video files over DNLA
- Does not have Amazon Instant Video App
- Complaints of clouding and flashlighting (may just be because more forum posts about them)

Right now I am leaning towards the Sony because it gets good reviews and does what I need and is $150 cheaper. Also the OTA tv guide may be useful in the future. My biggest concern is picture quality and that if playing .mkv video files becomes important to me (currently use my laptop) I will need to buy an external solution.

Are clouding and flashlighting as much of a concern with the Sony (same basic led edgelit technology)? Does anyone have direct experience with two similar models? Am I completely off track? Should I buy a tv that is not smart and get something like a Roku?

Thanks
Rupert

46" is very small for a 14 foot distance.
I have a 46" now and viewing from 7 feet and could go bigger!

I'd recommend at least a 55" if not bigger for 14feet.
FYI, the flashlighting and clouding are symptoms of LED edgelit displays, not a particular manufacturer.

If you want 46" you could go with a Samsung LCD with CCFL backlighting instead to avoid the flashlighting, the LN46D630 series has 120hz and the LN46D550 series is 60hz.
They have excellent USB and network video file format playback features and top rated picture quality superior to Sony in that class.
You could use a separate media player device for other streaming options if needed.

I picked up the Sharp 60" that BB had on sale as an open box special for $719. Add in the $199 PS3 combo for $119 and 8.25% sales tax in Texas and I'm at $996 with a few bucks to spare for an HDMI cable.

Over the last 10 years I've owned a 38" CRT HDTV, 26" CRT HDTV, 47" LCD, 50" Plasma and now a 60" LCD. I'm amazed at the size and quality of this screen ( backlight isn't perfect but very enjoyable ) and I don't see any need for 3D or Apps in my TV. The PS3 can do all the apps I need plus Blu-Ray and gaming to boot.

Just my two cents backed up my a thousand of my bucks worth of skin.

Agree with guy about. 46" too small for your room. Trust me.

Plus, if you're worried about playing your pirated / downloaded illegally matroska (you know, your .mkv files you keep speaking about) files, then invest in a media player

Keymastur, i just noticed nobody ever replied to your post, and you posted pics for us and everything . If you haven't already decided (?) then lets help you figure it out.

You didn't mention viewing distance. If it isn't too far, like 12ft or less, then maybe go for a smaller but higher quality 60" TV? If it's more like 14ft or more then you may be thinking straight with a decent quality 70" for more immersion.

Maybe it's just me but i would hang it a little lower than where you have it, mostly because closer to eye level tends to be more comfortable, and the picture can look better, it depends though.

thanks for the reply. i'm currently debating between the 60" 8000 and the 64" plasma 8000 model. been keeping up to date with both reviews. i've taken the sharp 70" out of the equation. it'll overpower the room too much. it's not a media room, just a living room in my townhouse. i'd say viewing distance 12-14 feet on the primary (the camera is where m head would be sitting on the couch)

NP,

Got it, you're almost in the final stretch with models and sizes.

I know store video feeds and torch mode isn't the greatest, but have you seen them in person yet?

Food for thought: room brightness and screen reflectivity. In other words, is the plasma bright enough for that spot and are those TV models matte or glossy?

And don't forget to set a little cash aside for an extended warranty (!)

Thanks everyone. I realize that 46" is small. The chart I looked at (Amazon) said the minimum size for 14' is 52" and the minimum size for 12' is 46". If I cannot find a 55" in my price range I can re-arrange the room to be about 11' from the screen.

I only have a handful of mkv files so right now it is not an issue. I like the idea of having a separate device like the ps3 and a dumb TV but don't know of any deals out there.

Does anyone have an opinion on the 2 TV's I have found decent deals on?

I just recently purchased a Vizio E470VA from Target. So far I really like it. I've owned a 37 inch Vizio for about 4 years without any issues.

I was thinking for awhile that my next TV would be a Samsung. But I came across the E470VA for $699 at Target, so I ended up getting that, being that I wanted a 120 hz TV. But now I see there is an E470VL at Walmart for the same price.

The main difference I see going from the VA to the VL is the VA is 50,000:1 Contrast Ratio and the VL is 100,000:1. I was curious if that would the really make much of a difference and reason enough to exchange the VA for the VL.

I am still considering maybe taking it back and getting a different brand name. There are some nice models from LG, Samsung and Sony. Although I have read a lot online about all brands, I still have no idea on what would be the best model to get. When you read forums and user reviews on various websites, there is always some people complain about a TV and others love them. So that's not really any help because every brand has people that either love or hate them.

I've read through various threads on this forum as well, and still not sure what TV I should really get.

I'm mainly looking for a 46 or 47 inch 120 hz LCD that can be bought from a main retailer. I have no interest in getting a TV shipped to me.

Any input would be very helpful.

1. Budget - $3000
2. Seating distance - Main TV in living room. 10-12 feet
3. Size/placement limitations - No real limitations but i am looking for 65"
4. Uses and sources - Watching Movies and TV and must be HTPC friendly. I watch quite a bit of sports.
5. Room lighting - Very low lighting. I keep the drapes closed most of the times.

I was looking at the Panasonic VIERA TC-P65VT30 which seems to be reviewed very highly but I am not totally sold on it and wanted to see what was similar on the LCD-LED side.

Thanks

Okay i won't be committed to the rules because my situation is a little bit unprecedented as i live in a town that doesn't have a lot of shops. Screens wise and shipment companies aren't too fond of delivering the product in one piece in my country.

So i've only two choices :

1- Sony 32CX520.
2- LG 32LW4500.

On paper and theoretically LW4500 is better in regard to specifications but many of my friends have bought CX520 and trying to convince me that each company has its own unique standards and that sony is better than LG even if it says High dynamic contrast ratio or massive response time despite not mentioning the actual numbers and so.

I'll be using this new screen for my xbox360 so basically it's for gaming and in my country it's really expensive due to the low value of our currency 1$=6 EGP as i live in egypt, its around 3500EGP and that's comparatively too much.

And i can't quite determine my budget because here there are no constants and products can go up high in the sky or down underneath the ground in a blink of an eye "unstable economy"

So any help will be extremely appreciated because i'm drowning in confusion, I Know that plasma is the best genre for gaming but it's around 15000 EGP here so bear with me. If there's a better screen around cx520 or lw4500 price i've to travel to another city if it's worthy.

In this case :

seating distance - around 4 - 6 ft. "very close to the screen"
size - 32.
use - Mainly for gaming.
lighting - Not orderly distributed, Two windows are slightly open at daytime and low lighting at night.

went today to BB to look in person. screens were pretty much the same glossy with slight reflection. but, i don't have any windows behind me (it's a fire wall). also took note of the off-center view. don't see an issue like a lot of people complain about.

So I got cold feet and didn't buy anything on cyber monday. Hopefully I didn't screw myself.

I have a budget around $1200 and am looking for a 55" 1080p TV. Mostly for watching tv and movies but I will play some games on it. I'd say my room is moderately bright but not a lot of natural light. There is really only one window which is usually closed but I have overhead lighting that I normally keep on unless watching a movie. I need a VGA input right now because my HTPC doesn't output hdmi. Also it wouldn't hurt if the sound on the tv didn't suck because I need to save up for a soundbar.

I really don't care about 3D or any of the internet stuff so if all possible I'd like to get a TV with better picture quality instead of paying for that other stuff although I doubt that is going to work out like I hope.

Honestly I'm not sure if I need an LCD or Plasma.

If all possible I'd like to take advantage of the holiday sales since I'm guessing that will result in a better tv. Thanks for the help.

Anyone own a E552vl vizio? Thoughts on the set?
1. Budget - ~$1000
2. Seating distance - Main TV in living room. 4.5-5.5 feet away
3. Size/placement limitations - None, really, something 40inches and above?
4. Uses and sources - Primary Use will be HDTV (Sports), Next, Competitive Gaming (XBOX360, want as little input lag as possible), BluRay/Netflix Streaming(PS3), I don't care about 3D nor aps, MAC DVI-HDMI web browsing occasionally, but rarely.
5. Room lighting - Can be made very low

Some Models I came across that I thought might suite my needs/wants:

Samsung UN40D6000SFXZA

Panasonic VIERA TC-L42E30

Sharp LC40LE830U

Thanks Guys. I love you all.

- With budget under 600$.
-Mostly use for watching television,
- Viewing distance very close to the screen (~3-6 ft)

I prefer led and Image Quality but won't mind if it's a good CCFL backlit. I have a few models in my mind:
- Sony Bravia EX520/EX420 : http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t....html?tag=rnav
- LG Lv3400 LED series : http://www.lg.com/us/tv-audio-video/...v-32LV3400.jsp
- Panasonic TH-L32E3V and TH-L32X30 - IPS LED Panel (I watched them at the store, Image Quality look very good) : http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/TC-L32E3
- Samsung series 5 LED edge-lit UN32D5000

So, please help me to choose which or any other models I should take a look b4 buying. Thanks in advance

Looking for a 60-65" tv that does the following -

Good PQ with no major screen issues (clouding/flashlighting)
4 HDMI ports
Games well with low lag (xbox 360)
Handles both natural and artificial lighting and glare/reflections well( If this wasn't a concern I would try out plasma)
Good customer support
I don't care if it does 3d or not.
Price under 2300 American dollars.

I watch sports/movies/shows, and play video games.

So far I have tried 3 sharp l60le832u all exhibit noticeable clouding (2 real bad 1 somewhat), then tried a sharp l70le632u which had horrible clouding. Point blank I hate visible clouding during playback.

I thought about the Sony ex720 but it seems it could have clouding issues, I then checked out the LG lineup but it seems they had gaming lag issues.

Please help me decide between the Sharp LC5283OUN and the Sony KDL-55HX820

The TV will be directly in across from two large windows. We get A LOT of light throughout the day but it nothing some curtains cant fix. The Sharp has a matte screen which would help with glare if there was any. The Sony i believe uses glossy gorilla glass.

Cnet didn't give the LC83OUN a good review but it looked great to me in person to me. Unfotunately the Bestbuy around me didn't have the HX820 on display so i wasn't be able to compare. I know both of these sets have their own problems but which is a better overall TV? Thanks in advance.

I have asked in the Sony ex720 thread a few times about clouding and PQ, so far very few answers to my posts but there are others in that thread mentioning clouding. I rather not take a chance on this without some more answers.

The LG line - only goes to 55" for most models and it seems at 55" they aren't ips panels and can experience severe lag in gaming though some people say there are some way to reduce it but not supported by LG and sometimes firmware updates cause the lag to go bad again.

Samsung - Only the 6000 seems to have a matte/semi matte screen and it appears to have screen issues such as clouding also.

Plasma - Doesn't work well for me in my viewing environment, too bad because they have great performance for the price.

Sharp - If my current Sharp didn't have clouding or at least it was in another spot on the screen I'd be happy overall with it, in fact I'm going to try it out tonight with some darker scenes and see if I can live with it.

Hey guys. I'm nearly making a decision about getting the LCD/LED UN46D7000 Samsung or the Samsung Plasma PN51D7000. For the LCD I heard problems arise with flash lighting and the sorts but I have seen this set a good amount of times and I have to say it looks stunning as far as picture quality and aesthetics. People swear that if not for the flaws, it'd be a killer set. And it seems to be coming down a lot in price. The UN46D7000 looks like a winner. But I really have a question on how does this set stack up on motion in fast movies/gaming like that of a plasma like the PN51D7000? The plasma would be a bigger size as well as deep blacks and killer response time (0.001ms).

What do you guys think?
My 7-8 year old 50" Pioneer (not Kuro) plasma is still great, but I want a bigger and hopefully better TV.

I'd like to go to 60-70 inch and I can spend up to $8000. The main requirement is absolutely the best picture quality for movies.

I am looking into Sony XBR, Samsung 8000 series plasma and LED, Sharp Elite, Panasonic plasma.

Any suggestions, please?
