My thinking was that if it did not recognize any of the file types, it would not show up. I thought you also said it did see the drive - running twonky.

If it's not seeing the drive at all, and it has files that will work on the Sony, then in 'setup' do a search for it in the network section. I'm at work right now, so I can't look at the exact menu choices and walk you through it.

Sometimes I need to make it find my drive attached to my router too......

Yea, it is seeing the Twonky, but I don't use that. It is not seeing the entire drive, like my LG does. I have already downloads the updates and whatnot and rest the player a few times and I still can see it. It is a WD My Book World edition attached directly to my wireless router. How to you make it find the drive? I have tried to refresh and search for it under the network setting and all it sees is the Twonky media service running on the NAS, not the entire NAS.

Can you turn twonky off in your router settings? (BTW - you should be able to stream your files using twonky).

With my USB drive connected to my WNDR3700 (Netgear), I have to tell my router in it's setup screen which directories to open up on the NAS. Maybe you need to adjust something there before the Sony will see your folders.

Yeah, I did that too. I configured everything in the setup screen on both the router and the NAS to share all folders with NFS and every other protocol known to networking (SMP, FTP, UnP, etc). Everything is accessible to all my home computers and my LG Blu Ray player. The Sony is the only one that cannot access it. I can even access outside my LAN! All it can view is the damn Twonky service, that i cannot turn off without running some scripts.

The problem with Twonky on my NAS is that I can only share a few certain folders on my NAS. I want the whole drive accessible. I contacted Sony via web chat and they said that I would have to contact a higher level of tech support. This thing may get returned if i cannot figure this out. Any other ideas from anyone?

do you report any problems using these unit with bd-r ?
There are 3 screen settings on the Blu-Ray player and I'm not sure what to set them to. I don't think it matters, but the HDMI out from the Blu-Ray goes into my Denon 3808CI and then from there to the TV. I know the TV is 48Hz with Deep Color, but that doesn't help me with 2 of the settings below.

I'm afraid of using Auto since the signal is going through my Amp and not directly to my TV, it might confuse the player into picking the wrong signal with Auto. I doubt the handshaking goes through the Amp to the TV.

THANKS!

The Blu-Ray Screen Settings choices are:

BD/DVD-ROM 1080/24p output
Should I turn this OFF instead of AUTO since this TV only has 48Hz
and the picture flickers sometimes? Since the TV officially supports 24p(albeit poorly), I don't want the Blu-Ray to turn it on by itself.

YCbCr/RGB (HDMI)
What do I set this to? Choices are:
Auto
YCbCr 4:2:2
YCbCr 4:4:4
RGB

HDMI Deep Color Ouput:
I assume I should pick 12 bit or 10 bit but I don't know.
Auto
12 bit
10 bit
off
Since Blu-Ray is only 8 bit, what good does 10 or 12 bit do anyway?

don't know where to go from here, maybe someone else here does. Mine works just fine, so I know the Sony is capable.

Given that your other stuff works fine, it does point to your s570 as the culprit, though.

I have often wondered about 'deep colour' too. I believe that there iare currently no commercially available bluray titles which utilise the advanced colour format. But in the realms of camcorders and the AVCHD format this setting may prove useful.

Does your av amp allow the picture through without processing? ('HDMI thru') if so use that setting if you think the amp may upset the video signal.

I then select the auto settings to allow the bd player to correctly identify and select its settings accordingly.

Sorry if this is obvious!

So is this Sony 570 player worth buying as compared to the PS3 (ignoring games feature)? Anyone have any comments on the advantages or disadvantage of each?

Is the Wifi on this player a dude or does it work well?

Is this player able to stream via wifi DivX DVDs saved on a computer hard drive(PS3 does this no problem)?

I love Costco!

After Sony's update in July to make the player 3D capable, Sony introduced a bug that prevented the players to turn off the PIP feature in the movie Sunshine. There are other reports as well that in some other movies you can't even turn on the PIP feature. So Sony, jacked up the PIP function on this player with that update. Today, I went to Costco and returned my unit which I originally purchased back in May. Since Costco offer a lifetime return policy on BD players, I was able to return it without any hassle. I then bought the player again and made sure the box said: 3D feature will be available via firmware update to make sure the player did not come with that update already. I went home set up the player and turned off the automatic software notification from the player's menu so I don't get any notifications every time I turn the player on. The movie Sunshine now play flawlessly!

Very interesting. Great work.

Does that mean that you can not play 3D movies now?

Besides the PIP with Sunshine movie did this player have any other issues for you? Since you repurchased the same player I suppose you really like this player.

No, I can't play 3D movies now but I don't care at this point since I don't have a 3D capable TV at the moment. There was another movie in my collection that I couldn't turn on the PIP feature , but to be honest, I can't remember which one it was. But I love Sunshine and I couldn't watch it after Sony's last update.

And yes, I love this player, other than the PIP issue with some movies, it has been a solid player, very realiable, and I know Sony will correct the PIP problem with another firmware update.

Well I picked up the 570 today. So far seems to work very good.

I downloaded and updated the firmware via wireless connection and it worked like a charm.

I also tested the 570 using my wireless connection to access DVD movies saved on my PC's hard drive in DivX format and it played them very well.

So far this player looks like it will be a keeper.

the S570 is my first SACD player. How would people rate the sound quality on the S570 vs a midranger stand alone SACD player?

Thanks,
Just read in the 570 manual on page 33 that Divx feature is only available on Canadain models. Anyone know why they did this?

Has any one in the US tested a Divx coded movie on their 570?

Thanks,

I think this is going to be much more dependent on your DAC's in your Receiver than in the player itself. You're either going to be sending lossless PCM data or DSD data to your Receiver. I don't think the quality of the player is going to make much difference in reading the digital data.

A lot of brands don't do Divx in the US but do elsewhere. Licensing cost is the reason, I guess. Plus we get streaming services like netflix and other countries don't (yet). I've never had a sony that played Divx, so I wouldn't expect the 570 to be any different. LG is probably the only game in town for Divx. Insignia is close, as it does mkv, mts and xvid, but not divx. Oddly enough, Insignia does CinemaNow which is Divx, but won't play Divx files. In any case, it's my main box for file playback since my sony, panasonic, toshiba and samsung won't do it. My panny DVD recorder will play Divx, but it won't output HD.

EDIT: To clarify, I'm talking about standalone blu-ray players, not DVD players or gaming systems or PCs.

I've been playing with the menus and googling but I've not found a way to do this...

Is it possible to disable the sound output over hdmi from the BDP-S570?

I have it connected directly to my TV via hdmi for video, but the sound is routed to a preamp via digital coax. The problem is that when I switch to the BDP-S570, I get sound from both my surround system and the TV. Muting the TV is a no go because it throws up an on-screen graphic. I currently have a macro on my remote to lower the volume, but it is slow and so a far from ideal solution.

I suppose my other option is to use the component outs from the BDP-S570 for video. If I went this route would it adversely impact picture quality?

Thanks.

Instead of 'muting' your TV's sound and leaving the 'mute' indication on the screen go into your TV's setup.

Go to the audio section and choose AVR speakers or turn off TV speakers. What you will see depends on your brand of TV.

The idea is to turn the TV speakers off, or tell the TV you are using external ones.
... and you can sometimes even add a discrete command for the speaker toggle to your macros. That's what I do on my sony tv to avoid digging into the menus.

Hey, thanks for the quick replys!

The TV is a Samsung HL-R6768W. I found the option "Internal Mute" in the options, but unfortunately it only mutes all sources at once. Ideally I could selectively mute sources on a one-by-one basis. Alternately if this option could be turned on/off via a remote code that would work just as well. I'm off to look through the TV manual and the code database for my remote to see if the command is there.

I'll post back what I find.

Edited to Add...
I should have mentioned that the remote is a URC MX-980. Been looking through the available code lists but no luck so far...

I hope you find a way to make this work. I give you a 99% chance at failure. Audio choice by input would be nice. Never heard of it though. Why would you wish to use your TV's speakers anyhow?

I only use the TV's speakers for watching TV/Cable; don't really need stereo or digital for broadcast TV and it saves wear and tear on my equipment.

Anyway... SUCCESS!

I couldn't find a discrete for "Internal Mute", but I was able to write a macro to navigate the TV's menus and turn the option on/off that way. I was worried that it would run slow but that didn't turn out to be a problem; actually runs faster than the TV can negotiate the changed input.

Thanks for the replies and especially to you Athlon646464 for pointing me in the right direction.

Great that you found an answer. This forum is a goldmine. Yet, I feel bad that you don't get DD5.1 on HD for TV or at least DD2.0 for SD. Each to their own. As for wear & tear: my excuse to buy new stuff. As if I need one.

Okay, I spoke a little prematurely; the macros as written did not work reliably. I had to add a bunch of delays between commands to give the TV time to keep up and they now seem fairly robust, although they do run a little slower than I had hoped. I may try to clean them up a bit in the future, but for now they do the trick.

No more problem with DVD+R backups. S570 plays now flawlessly. Issu may be due to dust...

Anyway a great player, fast and reliable
