Does anyone have an opinion as to the best software to use for streaming media to the BDP-S570? I'm running Windows 7 and have used the Homegroup feature of Windows Media Player but for some reason not all subfolders of the main folders I have shared show up on the Sony. I installed TVersity last night but it doesn't even show up on the Sony device as an option.

Thanks.

I use PlayOn along with their 'localfiles' plugin (it works better for me than the built in media share beta that comes with it).

I've never tried Twonky, but others do like it. They both have free trials, so give them a spin.

I just picked one of these up from Costco a couple weeks ago for around $180. What is the general consensus on this player? I've still got some time to decide if I want to keep it or take it back. How do you guys feel the overall picture quality is?

How about the DVD upconversion? Is there a better buy for the money?

I wish I could...haha. It's a rental house so to hook it up by wire I'd need to go buy at least 50 feet of cable. If I could just go through the wall I'd need like 10 feet. I'll hope that a firmware update improves things, but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed.

Wireless rarely runs at it's rated speed. Couple that idea with the need for your device (the s570) to have a consistent speed as well, and it doesn't take much to experience problems when streaming high quality video.

Netflix needs high speed broadband, but even more so, it needs a consistently fast connection - not one that varies a lot.

Inconsistency is okay for data, but not for streaming. If it works hard wired, then you can start by tweaking your router. Perhaps increasing it's signal strength for example.

But, check your connection first if you can by wiring it. Your download connection may not be as good as you think.

Have anyone else have that problem? Or more importantly, anyone have an idea how I can fix it.

Hi,

I am having the same issue too after installing the latest update version (M04.R.708) . There are no audio when streaming Netflix SD contents. But is OK when streaming HD content. Very strange. Anyone have a fix ???

Has anyone got divx support working with a workaround in the US?
I love the player minus that and this is making the PS3 a tempting alternative.
I've searched the thread to see if anyone else has posted this issue and couldn't find anything. I have my 570 connected by HDMI to a Yam RX-V665 then HDMI to a 50" Panasonic (1080i max). I have the Yam set to pass through video (no upscale). I've played a number dvds, blurays, streamed wireless, etc with no problems, but last night I received an SACD that I purchased (my first). When I started playing the disc the sound was flawless (and quite awesome), but the screen constantly flickered like a refresh issue or something. The Yam displays DSD for the media content, which is correct. I'm not sure if this is an issue with by br player, my avr, or the SACD. I did try the following with no fix: 1) changed my AVRs video output settings, 2) Restarted all three components, 3) replaced SACD with blu ray and then back. Any Suggestions???

And by the way, I've been using my Sony for a little over a month, and this thing is flat awesome. There may be other players that stream Netflix better, some that have better blu-ray dvd imaging, or some that have better sound processing, but I don't think anyone will find a similarly priced player that can handle all three of these as good as the Sony.

It definitely works for me on the Cdn version. Can you not return your US version and buy a Cdn version? Although it will most likely cost more.

One advantage of the 570 over the PS3 Slim (I have heard the fat is worse) is that the 570's fan is farily silent as compared to the noisier PS3's fan, if that make a difference to you.
I keep debating going over the border but of it cost too much more it is real close to PS3 territory. I have read around and some people state that they renamed them mpg and they worked. just have not tested myself yet.
Their are some pluses to the s570 that the ps3 does not have but this is a huge feature for me.
It seems crazy to have DNLA tech in the box and not have this capability.

I don't know about anyone else, but I haven't had any such problem since the update. Still get audio from Netflix content.

I don't agree. The s570 iS much better, blasting away the PS3 in PQ and audio.

While this is, of course a matter of subjective opinion, I have to say that so far the streaming on the S570 is impressive. With exactly the same network and wireless setup, the S570 streams the Netflix HD content at 1080i (or at least upconverts it to that automatically while streaming). The PS3 would only do 720P.

Again a disclaimer - it is possible that the S570 is taking the same 720p stream and upconverting it to 1080i - Can someone confirm that the HD stream from Netflix does not exceed 720p?

Anyway, I am very happy with the streaming PQ of the S570.

Contacted Sony Canada about when the ability to stream Netflix.ca would come on the 570 and here was the chat ....

Problem : Was wondering when there would be firmware upgrade to enable S570 users to access netflix.ca in Canada?

Valerie_ > Hi Steve. Welcome to Sony Online Support. I'm Valerie. Please allow me a moment to review your concern.

Valerie_ > Thank you for waiting, Steve. I'll be glad to assist you with the information about the Firmware update for using the Netflix videos.

Steve > Thank you

Valerie_ > Please give me a moment while I get this information for you.

Valerie_ > Thanks for waiting, Steve.

Valerie_ > Steve, I've Checked the information available online, there is no Firmware update is available for Streaming the Netflix.

Valerie_ > However, the Player is compatible to stream the Netflix videos without the Firmware upgrade.

Steve > How is this done?

Valerie_ > Steve, I'm really sorry we currently do not have the Steps to use the Netflix with the Blu-ray player.

Valerie_ > However, I suggest that you contact back us within few days, we will be glad to assist you with this.

Steve > Next week?

Valerie_ > Yes, Steve.

Valerie_ > You are correct.

Does anyone know if it's possible, without a firmware up grade, to stream netflix on a CDN unit? Couldn't tell if she was saying "yes there is a way to do it, but we just don't have the steps here at customer service" sort of thing, or if there simply is no way to do it without a firmware upgrade?

I would have called sony, the web chat is pretty useless. I haven't gotten much help from their online chat. I found phone support to be better.

I got rid of my slip and went to the S570 since I didn't game on it at all (I love my 360 Slim). So far, it was the right choice. Load times are way better. No frickin' irritating fan noise. I'm a silent PC freak and the PS3's fan was driving me insane when watching a movie. I never streamed with my PS3 so I can't speak to that, but I am using DLNA with the S570 and it works great. The picture quality is better to my eyes. Not a huge leap, but noticable.

Yay! Just joined! First post!

I have a BDP-S570 and read through most of the pages of this forum yesterday. I am aiming to start moving my DVD's onto something to play directly in my living room. I have used thumb drives to show pictures and play music but this was my first foray into video. After reading as much as I could here, I dug through my crap and found an old 250G hard drive in an external enclosure that I reformatted into Fat32 using FAT32FORMAT. I ripped a DVD (multiple episodes of a series) onto it (VOB style using DVDfab) and then hooked it up via USB to the front of the DVD player and gave it a whirl. It found the folder and was able to open the files. It went to the menu but it just scrolled through all the options and then started on its own. It then started in the middle of tracks (episodes). I think those problems are more my inexperience with ripping DVDs.

I was excited just to get it to play any video! Now to experiment on being able to get it to play properly.

I appreciate everyone who has posted useful info in this thread!

Welcome aboard.

I use DVD shrink and "re-author" my discs. I use 'no compression' and allow it to create 'unlimited' size VOB's, so that they are not broken up into 1meg size files.

Well, I finally decided to go with then s570 as my upgrade to the bedroom. I wasn't sure I wanted to pay $250 for it again but i found it at walmart on rollback for $198, i couldn't pass that up I think that's large savings

If you got it you are lucky. It unrolled and is back to $250. The web site is being worked on. It also has two listings for the S570. Amazon shows it at $208 (however how long it lasts).

Well, I don't think walmart is in sync as a company the site and store items sale etc vary greatly, I saw it on the site today for $250. Originally I was going to buy the S-270 for $150 but when I got to the store they were out of those, was going to buy the LG BD550 but wasn't sure of it's reliability and noticed the S570 was really down in price for a rollback. So i only ened up paying about $40 bucks more then i would have for the other two.

Not long ago walmart.com was not even a real part of walmart. They are still trying to integrate things. It's better, but they have a way to go. I love my S570 and use it daily for CD playback. It replaced an S360. My space is small, so the WiFi signal is not a problem.

Question, when I'm listening to Pandora, is there a way for me to approve or thumbs up a song? I can do it online and on my blackberry, but I haven't seen a way to do it with the blu-ray player?

while in pandora click the tools button on the remote, or, I think it's options on this model. You'll have options in the side menu that pops up.

The S570 seems to be very sensitive when it comes to wireless. I was using a D-Link DIR-825 and was able to connect and stream fine. Unfortunately, it was extremely flakey with the internet connection. I swapped it out for a Netgear WNR-3500L and struggled to keep the blu ray player connected. I couldn't even bring up the first screen of Netflix. All my other devices on the network have an improved signal.

A 50-70% connection with the Netgear wouldn't work, but a 7% signal with the D-Link would. As a temporary solution, I hooked the D-Link up as an access point for 5ghz for the BDP-S570, and it works fine. Hopefully they fix this in the firmware before its discontinued.

I'm curious to why more people don't use an airport extreme? A mac isn't required and they're rock solid when it comes to device and network support, as far as I've seen, I've had mine for at least 3 years now and it's solid. Every other router brand i've tried buffalo, dlink, belkin, netgear, linksys have all fallen short in build quality in comparison as well as network reliability. I've done business with Apple since the early 90's and used their hardware even before that in school.
