Official Sony BDP-S570 Owners Thread - Page 52

I just purchased a BDP-S570 and am reporting a serious flaw: absolutely positively no audio over HDMI to my Marantz SR7001 receiver. Has anyone else experienced "absolutely no audio over HDMI"? I will probably return the player.

More details:
(1) Software version M04.R.577

(2) Tried all four HDMI inputs on the receiver

(3) Tried two HDMI cables, one from Monoprice ("3FT 28AWG High Speed HDMI Cable w/Ferrite Cores"), one that came with my Oppo DVH-980H player

(4) Tried turning the power off and on to the player and also to the receiver in various sequences (this sometimes resets a balky HDMI connection, didn't help in this case)

(5) Tried several types of disks, including BluRay, standard CD, and hybrid SACD

(6) HDMI audio to the receiver works fine from two "universal" players, Oppo DV-980H and Pioneeer DV-610AV, with the same HDMI cables (I believe this narrows the problem to the BDP-S570)

(7) Audio can be transmitted from BDP-S570 to receiver using a coax digital connection (I don't consider this an acceptable work-around because of limitations of SPDIF audio)

(8) While the HDMI audio doesn't work, the HDMI video path through the receiver to the display (Sony SXRD rear-projection set) works fine; the display shows that the player recognizes the audio tracks on CD and hybrid SACD

Did you try sending both decoded and bitstream audio? I'm not sure that your receiver will accept bitstream, so you will need to decode into LPCM at the player level. You might also try turning off some of the more advanced HDMI features (deep color, HDMICEC). Those can sometimes cause issues with older HDMI equipment that can't receive them.

It should be noted that Hulu Plus now works on the S570. Looks fabulous!

I was disappointed to discover just how many shows are NOT on Hulu Plus though.

You might be able to see videos from their free gallery without logging in (you can on the iPhone.) But you can't log in and see your queue I don't think.

Until I started to use the streaming options.

When I am steaming video from any service vie tried so far (amazon, netflix, etc). I get these two large rectangular bars on the screen near the top. They cover a good 40% of the screen real estate, and are there no matter whether my source is HD or SD. It is not there when i am in the various menus, only when streaming. I've tried switching video modes on my TV (a Samsung LN32B550), no luck. I've looked around in the DVD player menus, and I cant find anything about this. My player firmware is up to date, so i am at a loss to proceed. How do I get rid of these bars during streaming so that I can use these features? Also, what the heck ARE those bars? At first I thought they were really fat display blocks for closed captioning, but they're in the wrong place on the screen for that.

This sometimes happens during DVD playback too, but not every time (although mostly after I try a streaming option). This is fairly annoying, and id like to be able to use the player i bought without these kind of problems.

My player is a Sony BDP-S570/BM U2. Oh, I'm attaching a picture I took of the TV showing these two bars on the screen (man, taking a picture really makes the dust back there show up, I need to clean behind the TV!)

Really don't know where to go with this problem. Any ideas? I have contacted Sony support, but I'm not expecting much from them. Part of the problem is I don't know whether this issue is the blu-ray player or the TV. Not for sure anyway. I suspect it's the player, but I can't prove that.

I've just had the rectangular bar issue, but not with streaming. It was on a standard dvd of West Wing. Anyone else?

From the SonyStyle web site, it looks like the old Microsoft WebTV updated to 21st century. But I could have reached the wrong conclusion since the data is less than specific in some areas. Cost?

Not sure about how much it costs, i was mainly wondering if it's better then the S570 it has a slot loading blu-ray drive and it looks like it has tons more features with a remote with a keyboard on it. I just wondered if anyone jumped on board, as this is a sony fan thread

Have you not noticed the 11 page and counting thread devoted to that product? If you have questions about it, perhaps that thread would be the better place to ask.

Search for the avsforum Sony NSZ-GT1 and there is a ton of info on it. I currently own it and will be returning it tomorrow to go with a standard 3D BR player, most likely from Samsung. I am getting the Samsung and not the s570 or s770 due to HDMI 1.4 spec. I started this process with the s570, which is a great HDMI 1.3 spec BR player.

Thanks for the heads up, I know there is probably a thread for it but many people have multiple products as I do so just thought i'd ask. I got the sony and the panasonic players, I don't trust samsung quality wise i had two products fail within a year and their bd players have a lot of bad reviews and complaints. So do many of their TVs.

I would normally agree with you regarding Samsung quality. The Samsung BD-C6900 and C7900 have gotten some excellent reviews since it has been out for several months. They seemed to have nailed these products according to some of the more audiophile reviews. If Sony had a HDMI 1.4 spec BR player i would get this, but since they don't until q2 of next year, i will move on the Sammy. It also gives me the option to be able to access Vudu and Blockbudter internet apps, which are not available in the Bravia Internet Apps and Widgets I get through the TV. I own a new Sony NX810, which I will be attaching this BR player to.

I really wanted to like the Sony BR GoogleTV solution, but there are too many shortcomings which led me to choose to return it. Majority of the BR features are the same as the s570, but but it was slower on start up and I felt the standard up conversion from DVD to 1080P was a little soft. Beyond that the BR portion was the same PQ wise. The main shortcomings I could not overcome were that the unit could only be controlled with the included remote and audio output when watching live or recorded TV.

I love my harmony one remote and the ability to program and use macros has been a god send. I could control some functions due to the HDMI CEC functions, but not fluidly. The included remote was great when used searching the Web or navigating the various menus, but was very cumbersome for most other things because it was not programable, no macro support, and usually took multiple key clicks or function key pushes to accomplish the most simplest task.

The other deal breaker was that the box did not do audio passthrough when watching live TV and would downgrade everything to 2 Channel 48hz PCM audio. There is a supposed fix coming, but no confirmation regarding this from Sony, only a Google PM on this Forum. BR played in DD or DTS surround sound, but everything else was in 2 Channel audio.

There are other things, but these are the main ones which led me to my ultimate decision. I will most likely pick up my new BR player and maybe the Logitech Revue GoogleTV solution during some Black Friday sale in a couple of weeks. I can hold off on the GTV for now, but I do think it will be a greAt platform once they fix these problems and unblock NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, and Hulu.

Great info, I have the sony s570 for the secondary player my primary player is the panasonic BD85k It has many video features that come close to the oppo players for it's price range plus it just feels solid. it does sound like the google tv will be a good future product once the bugs are fixed.

Not at this time. Rumors, but nothing official from Sony. I don't want to hijack the s570 thread, so I suggest if you are interested in learning more, then please see the GTV or Sony GTV thread.

How do you remove the online media content you don't want to weed through (e.g. Michael Jackson Video)?

Turn BD-Live off.

BDLive has nothing to do with the options in the cross media bar. In fact those options aren't even connected to blu-ray or disc play back. There are no ways to remove the media content in the cross media bar that I'm aware of.

It should, it's the same unit as the BDP-S570 except it comes with an HDMI cable and it's only sold at cosco as far as I know.

Thanks, Actually, I saw it at Sam's, so either way plenty of time to return.

Hi,

I am considering buying a 570, for use beyond Blu-ray playback. I would like to use the BDP and my TV to navigate through the folder hierarchy of my stereo music collection. I would connect a FAT32 USB drive with my full 250GB of .wav files to the 570's USB port. The collection consists of EAC ripped .wav files arranged by artist then album.

Then I would use the digital audio output to connect to my external DAC and stereo system. In effect the 570 acts as a juke box, but crucially outputting .wav, not MP3 format music.

My question is if will it allow me to carry out the above operation?

Thanks in anticipation

I have a BDP-BX57 (bought it a BJ's) and was watching the sample videos on Hulu+ last night. Hulu+/Sony are offering a free 2 month trial period for Hulu+. I still haven't decided if I'm going to try the free 2 month trial or not. Maybe if Hulu+ was without comercials I might consider it.

I'm alost sure this player will do what you want, the only thing I'm not sure if it supports wav format. I know it supports AAC and Mp3 I think WMA for audio, anyone know if it supports wav? I typically don't use wav for music.

Paul, you seem to know more about formats than I do. I do have a USB memory stick (Sony 2gb). I placed a folder on the stick with some .WAV files. I then plugged it into the S570 and it displayed the USB device and I could send the audio out the coax port (even though I also have DHMI connected).

The output of the S570 was PCM at 44.1khz 2 channel. That was probably the method used to make the .WAV files. It did not change the .WAV to .MP3 if that's what you are worried about. I don't think that's possible, but I could be wrong. As for the HDMI, it can send out the same audio file at 1.4mbs with LPCM from the USB device. The device also contained some .MP3 files that were sent out at 192kbs, which is how I stored them with Nero 10. Hope this helps.

The above bit rates, etc., were observed on a Yamaha RX-V867 and a Sony 32EX700 TV. Check page 33 of the manual for help on various playable formats.

Joe,

I could not ask for more. You've not only answered my question, but demonstrated through a trial that it works as you describe.

Your assumption on the .wav file being preserved is spot on.

Brilliant

Many thanks
Paul

So still no ntfs support? That was one thing (along with divx) I was hoping for.
