Hi i just hooked this player up and im finding out what it can do, or rather what it cant. By the looks of things the USB drive is useless as its only Fat32, doesnt play AVI or MKV's and cant even seem to play MP3's

Ive connected it to my windows7 laptop and managed to finally play a WMV which seemed to work ok but then nothing I have is wmv, it also played the sample mpeg windows videos, although they seem to have vanished and I cant find them any more.

So maybe this player is not for me since it wont pay anything I throw at it currently, or am I missing something here?

Many thanks in advance

Well Mp3's should play off a disc, or usb drive. It's true usb connected devices have to be fat 32. As far as Streaming, I've recommended isedora ( dlan server package) several times on this thread. It will take any video file you have on the hard disc and transcode it to something the player can understand. Also, the same goes for audio. While via streaming mp3 is the native support isedora will take other files and transcode them through pcm. By the way it's not a free server it costs $25 for a single license, but it's free to try. The demo will run for an hour at a time. It's the best solution for mac users and DLNA. I tried PS3 Server, but it doesn't seem to work as well.

With Isedora on my macbook i can play aac files mp3 etc for music. for video i can play mp4 mkv etc via transcoding.. Check out www.isedora.com for details. It's for both mac and windows computers.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info, I downloaded and installed the free version and although it finds the server and folders it keeps coming up with the error, there is no playable file.

I checked the always transcode video option and no joy

finally managed to find the files after turning off and back on and resetting the server.

Only issue is that playing an HD video over the wireless seems to be jerky and unwatchable. When the file loads it says im getting about 350kbps which im guessing isnt enough.

Would hard wireing it into using a network cable help?

Just bought mine last week and getting used to all of the features.

Has anyone streamed from a networked media server such as a WD My Book Live Home Network Drive? Was thinking about getting one of these so I don't have to leave my PC on all the time to stream content when I want to - lots of movies and music on there. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Also, are you streaming Netflix in HD or just SD to this player?

Well, just got my 570 as well, and am not terribly happy with it compared to my PS3. These are some initial problems, anyone know of a solution to these?

- Netflix won't do DD5.1 I can get DD5.1 e.g. from Monk Season 8 on Netflix on my PS3. But not on the 570, it's only stereo.

- No subtitles/closed captions from Hulu or Netflix; I can get CC from both on the PS3.

- The most annoying thing, to me, is that I can't play SACD without turning on the TV! It appears, from what I can tell on my processor (Onkyo 885) that it won't sync up the HDMI connection unless the TV is on. Argh, this is one of the reasons I got a standalone player, to listen to music with a quieter component than my noisy old-model PS3.

Are there solutions to any of these, esp. the last? Thanks for any help!

When it comes to dlna hardwire if possible ALWAYs, i've had nothing but crabby ness with wifi and dlna. Also make sure the TV system in isedora is NTSC or video playback won't work right. it defaults to PAL.

As far as the netflix and other streaming services, if you wanted DD 5.1 and subtitles you should have just stuck with the ps3 as those options are only currently available on game consoles, the wii the ps3 and the xbox. I don't know much about sacd, I don't use that feature, as I don't even own any.

Hope this helps!

I'll try and find a cable and test it. I have a WD media center at home and it works with everything under the sun, its a shame this player doesnt have NTFS and more filetype options.

I first hooked mine up by wireless and had no issue. But I had an extra 50 ethernet and ran it under my kitchen floor thru my basement to the S570 in living room, just for the sake of knowing I'm always getting a consistent signal.

If you don't have a cable to test it out to see if it solves your issue go to Home Depot, get the cable and run it across the floor to try an isolate your problem.

For the $159 I paid for this unit, which I picked up last Sat, you can't beat it!
I've already streamed and watched 6 movies from Netflix already. Better than standing in line waiting for someone to scan through all the movies at my local Redbox! Worse yet when I'm just trying to return a DVD.

5.1 through Netflix can't be that far off too.

When it comes to internet streaming, wifi works fine for me, for the most part anyway, it's only DLNA and local network streaming that has actually crashed the wireless drivers on the sony. I have isolated this by testing internet which works fine, and then streaming via dlna which crashed after a while, switching to wired did not yield the same crash.

I can try to help with the SACD issue. My subject disk is The Moody Blues Seventh Sojourn. My S570 is connected to a Yamaha RX-V867 via HDMI1. I have a TV connected with HDMI control off. When playing a SACD, the front panel display always has a blank track number after the "T". I do not need to turn on the TV to play an SACD. If I do, the AVR Info display indicates 5.1 is being received. When I power on the TV to check there is a moment of silence before the S570 output continues. The V867 supports DSD over HDMI (which is why I bought it). I'll guess you can still get SACD to output over a 2ch RW if you disable DSD. I could. I can also see that DD Prologic II on my S570 stops when the DSD causes "Straight" to be displayed on my AVR. I have sent the SACD out HDMI via LPCM. The receiver doesn't care.

I don't know if this helps, but I hope you can find a solution to your problem. Perhaps a different HDMI cable will change things? Just a guess. HDMI can be one strange animal. Too bad S/PDIF can't be used.

Found a cable, plugged it in, went through the wired setup up, dropped internet which was expected as I dont have ICS set up on my laptop. It eventually found the files but then it wouldnt read them. So I give up.

In an ideal world this player would be good enough to play files from a Hard disk plugged into the USB, sadly its not.

Im sure that it plays BD though...

Paul....

Do you have something turned on in the avr regrading HDMI control?
I just picked up a 570 today because of the great price. This is my first BDP so I'll probably have some setup questions when my HDMI cables get here. I'm looking forward to seeing what it will do.

I have HDMI control enabled. I have it disabled in the TV (Sony EX700) but enabled with the S570 & Mag H2160. Both those peripherals cause the AVR to switch to their respective input when powered on.

Nope, I've turned off hdmi control in both the pre/pro (Onkyo 885), and the 570 itself. No luck. I do have an older dvd/cd player (also a Sony) that uses HDMI, and that will work for music without the TV. So I don't think it's just my pre/pro that's at fault.

Hey guys, Sorry to be a bit off topic here, but if anyone happens to own the Avatar Extended release just released last month, I can't seem to figure out how to get into the commentary, I thought there was supposed to be one. All the extras menu yields is direct scene access on disc 1. If anyone knows where i can access the audio commentary from. please give a shout.

Thanks

Hi guys,

Quick question - does anyone have any idea when Sony may be introducing new Blu-Ray players? Recently I sold my Oppo BDP-83 for the 93 coming out, but decided all I really cared about was wireless, SACD, and Blu-ray. That lead me to the much cheaper 570. However, I'm wondering if it would be worth it to wait until early next year or so, if they're going to update their line.

Either that or pick up a 570 on Closeout!

Thanks,
Brian

UPDTATE: MKV is now playing fine from the pendrive. The player supports FAT32 only, very limited if you plan to use it for large files. NTFS HDD is NOT supported.

So, if I am understanding this correctly. I can only play .mkv files up to 4gb via USB port? That really sucks

I don't work with mkv files much. I have confirmed that full length movies play over dlna with no trouble though. Most of the file formats I work with are mp4 or m4v these are the most common in broadcast, or I've worked with .mov files. Also please note, i have no way to rip HD content, I don't own a blu-ray drive that can be connected to this computer, all my BD drives are stand alone players. I have played 720p content in avc/mp4 content if that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try the demo when I get home. Do you know if it will work with a networked drive. I have a 1TB drive connected to my AEBS which my iMac can access. I assume I install isedora on the iMac then point it to the network drive, then access the drive from the bluray through the iMac?

That should work. one thing I learned, was to make the path to the files as short as possible. iSedora or the sony doesn't like deep hierarchies of folders.

I found what works best other then the default music and movie folders in the home folder and photos is to create whatever folder you want to use to serve on the external drive or the network drive in your case and share with a short path. It seems the deeper the path was for me the player would select the wrong file so it wasn't reliable with deep paths. Just a tip.

Yes, thanks

I tested it out last night and only certain .mkv files would play. The ones that did were very choppy (other formats worked fine). I suppose that could have something to do with the fact that the drive is networked. I'll pull the drive this weekend and connect it directly to the computer and see if that makes any difference.

It also could have a lot to do with the video/audio in the mkv file. Remember mkv is not a format, it's just a container. You can put quiet a few different audio and video codecs in various resolutions in there. Perhaps 1080p h.264 video with 7 channel AAC are choppy, but it works if you use DTS or vice versa. You really have to delve into what's in the container to find the problems.

Very enlightning thank you, as you can see I'm fairly new to this stuff.

I probably should have asked this a long time ago, but does anyone have the Deep Color Output set to 10 bit? According to page 22 of the operating instructions, it suggests that you normally select Auto, however, it also says that you can set the player at 10bit or 12bit when the TV is compatible with Deep Color. Do you notice a difference with either setting?
Pauly...

Try something seemingly goofy but turn TV on, make sure multi-channel sacd is working, then turn the TV off.

See if that doesn't set something so that it works.

If I remember while it was playing a SACD I think I cycled the TV on and off.

I'd leave it at auto or 10bit. As far as I know there is no content that supports 12bit. So even if your display, the player, and any AVR you had in between supported it; at best you are going to get upconverted 12bit from 10bit.

Based on the reported bugs with the current/latest firmware, I'd turn HDMI Deep color off for most reliable results. Some people lose sound to web services with it left on. I've also had it cause errors on a non sony tv with it on as well, when powering off the unit.
