FWIK, 3D video will be exactly the same. However, PS3 will not output lossless audio via HDMI when in 3D mode. That's the limitation of PS3 (not being HDMI 1.4 in hardware). 3D player doesn't have that limitation.

NTFS is quite complicated to implement. So a lot of players out there don't support NTFS.

Mkv files are often associated with pirated movies. Hence you don't see any major brands implement such features, especially Sony who owns movie studios.

Both are design decisions Sony takes (in line with most BD players out there) and not likely to change.

Unfortunately to the best of my knoweledge the 570 does not indicate HD feed from netflix but it plays the HD in excellent quality.
I've found that when I need information about any device that plugs in, this forum is the best. When I search the forum, I find many threads and posts that indicate Netflix sends 1080p and 5.1 sound if and only if you have a PS3. Should a thread start about Netflix 1080p streaming on a non-PS3 then I will jump in 100%. Until that happens, I'll be patient. Please feel free to correct my research; my ego doesn't work online.

But HD in Netflix usually means 720p which is available to many players (Xbox 360 for example). 1080p HD is a newer format that is currently only available to PS3 and 1080p HD streams probably are rarer than normal 720p HD stream. Not all Netflix HD movie offer 1080p.

Netflix used to also not offer any HD stream to PC players but later it has relaxed that limitation.

A typical Netflix SD stream uses about 3mbps bandwidth. HD (720p) stream uses about 5~6 mbps. If we have some way to monitor the network bandwidth usage, we can identify whether or no S570 supports HD playback.

Thanks. I was about to buy the player and test it out with a cost of 15% restocking fee.

If you have Costco nearby, you can buy the costco version of S570 called BX57 for cheaper and no restocking fee within 90 days.

I did what you advised...I reset the player, powered down the system, and I'm still having all the same issues. If playing a BR movie, if I press eject...the x57 freezes. One time it actually ejected the disc, but when I put it back in..then it froze...it never started back up. Also, pressing power during playback of a movie freezes the unit. It will not turn off. I have to unplug the player to get the disc out/un freeze the unit.

Unfortunate, because I have no issues playing netflix movies...very smooth. I'm only on DSL(7d / 1.5up) but have a Netgear 3700 router. But this thing sucks as a BR player for me.

Sounds like you have a defective player. Why not send it back for a replacement?

"Mkv files are often associated with pirated movies. Hence you don't see any major brands implement such features, especially Sony who owns movie studios."

Thank you for replying Foxbat121.

If Sony does not want to implement features to support mkv files, why do they advertise that they can play them?

I am still having trouble with my wifi. The player will not find its way onto the net for firmware upgrades. It does recognize my computer and its shared folders. All of my other wifi gadgets work fine through out the house. What might i be doing wrong? If i can't get my upgrades through wifi can i download the firmware file, place it on a usb stick and upgrade that way? The manual
states only through a burnt finalized disk, but has anyone tried it with the usb?

Finally has anyone attempted connecting an external hard drive via the usb port to play large hd movie files?

MKV is not a file format. MKV is a container. You can put lots of different audio and video codecs inside of an MKV. Not to mention subtitles, menus, and other stuff. The player can probably play MKV files just fine, but it's having problems with something in the container.

It works if the drive is Fat32 formatted, which means that a single file can't be larger than 1 gb. Also as has been posted many times, unless you use some thing like guiformat, you are restricted to the FAT32 total drive size of 32gb.
So I guess it depends on what you mean by large hd movie files

Edit: Oops not 1 gb 4 gb..sorry

I just noticed something weird in the menu. When you scroll through the icons and you get to pictures there's a server thing underneath it and when you press it it says "connecting to server"...is this something new or am I just noticing it now?

It's the DLNA functionality where you can steam music, video, and pics from your PC to your TV via the Sony.

Has it always been there? Why is there a weird alpha-numeric number under it?

It's not anything you have to look for. If you click on it under photos for instance it should bring up a menu with the photo albums you have stored on your computer. In order for this to work you have to enable sharing on your home network on your media program i.e. Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center.

Ummm...no, all of my machines are configured to share media and they show up as media devices in the Network folder but there is no sign whatsoever of them from the player.
When I click on the Photos icon, nothing happens.

Where can I read up on exactly how this is supposed to work?

Mine worked automatically when I allowed sharing on Windows Media Player. You could check the help section on your PC's media player, the Sony manual, or search online.

I'm running Windows 7 and quite frankly, nothing I read in any of the Microsoft documents matches what I have on my screens. And there is not one word in the S570 manual about accessing resources on the LAN..not one word.

I've enabled streaming on each machine -- because I see nothing anywhere labeled "sharing" in either Windows Media Player or the Media Library app. I can see the photos in the Windows Media Libraries on each machine. The Blu-ray player does appear in the network but there doesn't seem to be any way to to the media servers from the player. I'm not really interested in streaming, I just want to be able to see my photos on the TV.

[Similar?] What your picture shows is a networked device. The device name and its netbios name are above the MAC address. Since its a generic icon, it is not running software (like WMP or WMC on Win7) that would show as a pretty Windows icon and still have the text to the right. Should you use WMP to save content on your computer, you can access that content from the S570 through the HOME button and then move to the correct content type. If you store the content with any other method there may be complications that other can help with. If you turn off the computer the icon remains but the pretty Windows box goes away.

The sharing configuration on Win7 is located in Network and Sharing Center. There you will be able to turn on sharing options.

But I don't have my 570 connected to a computer so why am I seeing this server icon appear? Oh and by similar I mean mine has the same server icon but a different set of numbers and letters next to it. I found that picture online and used it as a reference as to what I was seeing.

File Sharing is on all the machines and I can stream among them...it's just the Blu-ray player that doesn't see any of the machines. It doesn't appear as a streaming device when I configure Windows Media Player either -- it's a server in the Network folder but not a device in WMP.

I was on the phone for about 20 minutes with a first level tech at Sony who logged in via remote assistance and he couldn't figure out what was wrong either. Someone is supposed to call me back tomorrow to give it another try.

Update: I decided to take one last look before turning everything off and suddenly one of machines actually shows up on the server list. It appears with a Windows logo in the services. I don't know why only one is showing up; I have 4 media servers in the Network folder. I've been tweaking a lot tonight and I guess I'll have to compare each and every setting tomorrow.

DLNA Media streaming is not the samething as file sharing. It is a separate option (used to be configured in WMP before Win7). You may also want to check your firewall to make sure it is not blocked.

Maybe you're seeing a neighbor's unsecured shared wireless device?
I don't get it -- Sony is a member of the DLNA group, yet the 570 BARELY supports anything via DLNA.

I have to take all of my stored content on my media server and convert it to MPEG-2 Video before the kids can watch anything.

Will we ever see Sony expand their support of more DLNA media types?

..and why does Canada get DivX and Avi, and we don't in the U.S.?

Griping today..

Since the name shown next to the icon does not seem to be known by you, I'd agree you are detecting a nearby wireless device or router. If you have no wireless devices, like a Laptop with WiFi, you can go the the S570 media server list in setup and hide it.

A lot of posts here complain about the poor range of the S570. You seem to have great range. Also, with Win7 you can scan for other devices with WiFi and see if the same name appears. You'd need a wireless computer to do that. I see four or five on my scan, some with no security.

To update: you can see the computer or router but no connection will be possible until that computer is providing a connection service. That would be WMP, or WMC in Win7. With Win7 you will get sharing of media after login if it's setup that way. XP and below needs WMP to be running and sharing.
