Official Sony BDP-S570 Owners Thread - Page 107

I reluctantly returned my BD57 and picked up a Panasonic BDT 110. Here is my initial comparison:

BX57 (S570):

Pro:
* Includes dual-band wifi. It will be very useful to many but I prefer wired connection and don't use wi-fi for streaming.
* Slightly faster boot up than Panny.
* SACD playback. I already had a Pioneer Elite player that plays back SACD (with HDMI DSD output). So, not important for me.
* On board BDLive storage
Con:
* Very basic netflix interface with bare minimum features
* No fan of the Sony PlayStation style home screen
* DLNA is barely funtional and can't be controlled on the PC side.

Panny BDT110:

Pro:
* Comes with free Avatar 3D via mail in rebate. That's the main attraction for me to get the BDT110.
* 2D to 3D conversion in player. So, if your 3D TV doesn't support such conversion, the player will do it for you. My TV already has this feature, so I have no use for it.
* Cheaper price (see cons).
* Superior Netflix interface. It is equal to PS3 version with the support of DD Plus 5.1 audio and search functionality. It does have occasionally blank screen bug but by far it is light years ahead of the Netflix feature offered by Sony.
* Slightly better DLNA implementation and offer the capability of been controlled from PC (Win7 Play To support!).
Con:
* Slightly slower startup speed than Sony (a few seconds).
* No wifi on-board. You need buy optional Panny wifi adapter. Again, I don't need wi-fi.
* No BD Live storage. You need to insert your own SD card to get the storage. I have plenty of SD cards laying around. So, not an issue for me.

The main reason for the switch is Avatar 3D BD disc. That's all I care. Otherwise, Sony is a decent piece of hardware. Much faster than two other BD players I have. I have no problem recommend it to anyone who is interested in a 3D player but not so muxh as a Netflix player.

You're right. But they took the SACD logo off the box.

I just bought a Sony BDP-BX57 (same as BDP-S570 except packaged w/ free hdmi cable). It won't see any of my Xvid .avi files on my SD card plugged into the USB port in front on the unit.

I saw in the manual that only Canadian models play .avi files. Is this case?

Has anyone in the USA played Xvid .avi files on this player off a USB thumb drive or FAT32 or NTFS formatted hard drives? If so, how? Will it stream .avi files via the internet using the DLNA?

So far I have failed at getting DLNA to work with my new Win 7 laptop. Instead I bought a 25 foot HDMI cable from Amazon for $10. I plug into the Sony TV directly. There was nothing to set or do. The laptop figured out it had an extra monitor via HDMI before I could look at it. Anything and everything on the laptop is mirrored to the TV from Google surfing to YouTube or videos from my hard drive.

Yes, I will probably take the time figure out DLNA. I doubt it will improve the picture quality as seen from the couch.

US version will NOT play avi files. Its replacement model BDP-BX58 apparently does.
BX57 only works with FAT32. BX58 supposedly will work with NTFS.

I got my BX57 to stream via DLNA but it won't recognize avi files.

It's not all rosy on BX58 side. You will lose 1GB onboard BDLive storage and 5GHz wi-fi band and a few other cost cutting measures.

Sorry, can't help you. I have the BX57.

You'd probably get answer to your question in this thread:

That kind of sucks. I wonder how the bit rate indicator works. I couldn't find out much about it on the web site.

And unless I'm mis-reading the BDP-S580 manual and mis-understand the new AACS governence "rules' now implemented on new DVD/BD players introduced and or manufactured since Jan 1 2011, the x8/Sx80 players will not present HD content over an analog component connection.

The BDP-S580 manual, pg 10, footnote 2:
Code:
Protected content on BD-ROMs is output at 480i resolution from the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jack
(page 6).
The BDP-S580 manual, pg 6:
Code:
Copy Protection
Please be advised of the advanced content
protection systems used in both Blu-ray Discâ„¢ and
DVD media. These systems, called AACS
(Advanced Access Content System) and CSS
(Content Scramble System), may contain some
restrictions on playback, analog output, and other
similar features. The operation of this product and
the restrictions placed may vary depending on the
date of purchase, as the governing board of the
AACS may adopt or change its restriction rules
after the time of purchase.

You are correct that there is no component output and no optical or coax digital audio output either on BX58/S580.

Optical no, Coaxial yes. Or. at least the manual states such.

I for one will live with what shortcomings the S570 has as compared to the new 80 series. These new ones don't impress me enough to upgrade, and actually seem like a step backwards.

Cowboom is selling refurb BX57 for $109.99 with free shipping. I just got one, HDMI cable is still included. The only issue was the unit has been registered for Sony Essential and I need to call to reset it.

Thank you for posting, that's a good deal! What is Sony Essential? Is that the Sony streaming service?

Got it, thank you! So you have to log into Sony's site in order to use the online services on the device? Sounds weird.

Cowboom appears to receive poor feedback on resellerratings.com and similar sites. How have your experiences been? Also, how would you describe the condition of the BX57? Good as new, did it look beat up, original packaging? Would you recommend purchasing it from Cowboom?

Thanks in advance. I've decided that I want to get a S570/BX57 but they are hard to find new since the S580/BX58 came out a few weeks ago.

I believe Cowboom and its ilk sell customer returns. They do a simple functional test and if passes, sell on ebay and such. The products are not refurbs!

I got a DVD player off ebay from such a reseller who claimed the item was manufacturer refurbished.

And, no, it wasn't. Manufacturer refurbished item is virtually indistinguishable from a new item, i.e., new packaging inside, etc. The player I got was definitely a return. The box was taped up, no wrappings inside, batteries already in the remote, etc. Luckily, the player worked. Needless to say, that was the last time I bought from those kind of sellers.

I think buying from Cowboom and such is a lottery. Do you feel lucky?

P.s. The refurbs from the manufacturers themselves, i.e., Sony Style, will sell "authentic" manufacturer refurbs and be a much better bet. Or more reputable, bigger seller like Overstock.com will sell "genuine" manufacturer refurbs as well.

As long as you know the terms going in they should be fine. Such as you can return something purchased on their site but not if you purchase it from them via eBay. Condition wise it's pot luck... various returns in various states of condition. Their descriptions are close... I received two units both with large scratches on the plastic faceplate. Both were described as in good condition (not great) if I remember their wording correctly. I returned both and was promptly refunded (I purchased from their site of course).

While aware this is the BDP-S570 thread, for those that can do w/o the built-in WiFi and w/o the 1GB of memory for BD Live/BonusView ............

I see NewEgg has the BDP-S470 on sale for $129.99+Free Shipping.

Cowboom says they are a BestBuy "brand". It seems they are mainly resell refurb and BestBuy returns. This is second purchase I have done with them. The first was a Insignia Blu-Ray player for the mulit-rigion hack enabled function. Both units came clean and look new.

It seems Cowboom listed reurns as "preowned" like the Insignia player. The battery was already in the remote. When you buy a "preown" you got a list of available units with conditions and possible missing parts such as manual or remote.

The BX57 on the other hand is listed as refurb. It came in with brown box but of the box has labels that seem it was indeed went through a more formal refurb process than the "preown" Insignia. They battery are new in the package not in the remote and the unit looks like new. So far I have no problem exepcept the noted registration issue which one phone call takes care of it.

Not all the internet apps. You don't need that for Hulu or Youtube etc. You do need it for Amazon.

I already have a S470 from the Disney deal last year but I need another player that can do Amazon VOD. I was debating to get another new S470 or the refurb BX57 and decided to try the BX57 for the built in wireless and 1GB memory. I am happy I went with the BX57.

Sony Style sells refurb S570 for $20 more and since it is S570 not BX57, no HDMI cable. BTW, Cowboom aslo sells stuff on Overstock.com.

You mean Cowboom sells THROUGH Overstock.com. Doesn't mean it's from Overstock. There is a difference.

Plenty of larger online vendors like Amazon, Newegg, Buy.com, etc. allow third-party vendors to sell through them. Doesn't mean anything.

Don't you think it's a bit odd that Cowboom, supposed Best Buy entity, is selling BX57, a warehouse, i.e., Costco, model?

I hope someone can help. I have this player and recently switched to a DirectTV/Qwest bundle for internet and TV. Now the player can't connect with the internet. It sees the wireless router, the numbers and info are all correct on the player's readout, it says internet connection OK, but when I go to get content it says a connection error occurred and it doesn't recognize the server. I've spent hours on the phone with Sony, Qwest, and DirectTV. Reset everything several times. Is there a special encryption I should set on the Modem? Right now it's WPA/WPA2 personal. I don't understand why it worked fine with the Comcast box and modem.

I bought Mezzmo, which converts all unplayable files to a format recognized by the Sony. Now all my FLACs (250Gb worth) play, and they're on a FAT32 drive. So does everything else. All video files seem to work as well.
