Official Sony BDP-S570 Owners Thread - Page 127

Hey guys. I have the Sony BDP-BX57 3D ready player, which I heard was basically a rebadged S570? I also have a Sony BDP-S380.

I got an 8gig Sandisk Thumb Drive which was Fat32 formatted. However, I'm a Mac user. I wasn't able to get the Sony S380 to read the TD so I did some research. I gathered that it had something to do with the way the TD was formatted as Fat32 and to try formatting it as an NTFS. So I found an NTFS Program for my Mac (because Mac's can't read NTFS) reformatted the TD to NTFS, put some avi and mkv files onto it, and watched them from the front USB port of my S380 no problem! I was quite pleased.

But I then took that same TD upstairs to my BX57/S570 to watch it, and the player told me that it wasn't recognized. Not that the FILES weren't readable, but that the TD wasn't recognized. I tried the rear port too with no luck.

So, I took the TD down to the S380, put the TD, and read it no problem. So, why would the TB be readable on the S380 but not the S570... especially if the S570 is supposed to be a higher end BR player "on paper"?

Most importantly... what the heck am I to do about this??? Surely different "brand name" flash drives have nothing to do with it? If that's the case, that will be a giant drag. What about USB hard drives? Why would the S380 want NTFS formatted drives, but the 570 want FAT32? That could be the case, I don't know. But that is silly if so.

I'm pretty sure my S570 has the latest firmware because I check that regularly. Just in case... does anyone know off hand what the latest FW should be?

EDIT: After spending WAY too much time researching this, I've learned that the BX57/S570 at one time only supported FAT32. Perhaps it still does? But I didn't see any updates avail for it, so I'm guessing they haven't fixed this. If Sony has to pay Microsoft for the use of the NTFS format, then clearly they have done so already because my S380 plays my NTFS formatted TD just fine. So it seems we're waiting on firmware to allow us to be able to do that then?? I can't believe that I have to buy another TD and format as FAT32, which is limited to 4gigs just to use for that particular BR Player.

Thanks guys!

Jason

Although the 570 is a higher end model with more features than the 380, it's a generation older and doesn't recognize NTFS like the newer 380 as you discovered. So you'll have to get FAT32 working if you want to use your drive in both. I can't think of any technical reason it wouldn't work. Have you considered using DLNA instead?

No new firmwares for the 570 have come out in quite a while. The version depends on the hardware version of your player since there are a couple of different ones. HERE's how to check. In any case the latest does NOT add NTFS support. Since the x70 series is now 3 generations old, I don't expect any new features.

If my receiver doesn't do hdmi 1.4 can the 570 output video over hdmi to the tv and audio over optical to the receiver?

If so, what are the settings to do this?

Yes it can. It will work without changing any settings. However, you will want to make sure Dolby Digital (coaxial/optical) is set to Dolby Digital and DTS (coaxial/optical) is set to DTS. These are all under Setup/audio settings.

Ok so basically those outputs are always on

Is anyone having issues with HBO's Game of Thrones? When I insert the disc, the player freezes up. It does not go to any menu, the screen is blank and the display just shows 00:00:00... I have to unplug the power cord to eject the disc.

Yep. It didn't the first time I put the first disk in, but it froze when I put it in the 2nd time.

With the 570 I changed the setting from use onboard memory to use USB drive rear without installing a USB drive and then all discs played.

Turning off network access seems to let Game of Thrones work better as well

The last few days I have had an issue with my 570. I put a BD in and I get an icon on the screen that looks like a disc. It stays on this screen for ever. The only way out of it is to unplug the machine. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Ideas?

A new firmware update would be nice, but Netflix and such, but at this point I don't expect it. Funny though, as I have a Samsung player a year older that still offers them from time to time.

Please forgive me if this sounds strange, but are you saying you don't have NetFlix or that it doesn't work very well?

Check:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...0#post19760390

Seems the S570 tells Netflix that it is not region 1 (or something similar) and it won't communicate even if you have the icon as I do.

Current US firmware is M04.R.787.

Nothing to do with the Sony. Netflix blocks any atempt to access an American account if you are not in USA. I am in France now and just tried to watch a Netflix movie on my Ipad. I can't even open the first page and a msg abou blocking access from overseas comes up.

Has anyone had problems playing the "American Psycho" BD on the BDP-S570? I've had the BD for a while, but last night was the first time I tried to play it on the Sony. No screen will even load and it just says "invalid disc." The disc isn't smudged or scratched at all, and I've tried little adjustments that have worked in the past with other problematic discs (turning off BD-Live, switching to internal memory). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I wasn't clear. Sorry about that. I meant a firmware update with 5.1 surround and subtitles would be nice, as the PS3 has it and Xbox live. I don't own a PS3, but I do own an xbox. It would be nice to not have to fire up the xbox for surround sound on some titles.

This device is almost 2 years old now. Is that correct? I wouldn't expect that update. Maybe for newer devices. The sony interface for netflix ...at least on this particular blu ray player is crap anyway. Other devices have much better interfaces for netflix i.e. Roku2 that streams in DD+ 5.1. JMO

The new Sony 2012 x90 series players have the updated Netflix UI (exactly like the PS3) support for 1080p and DD+/CC.

There ya go. I figured Sony couldn't continue the crap UI of the 570 for netflix. There are too many other better UIs on other devices.

It's odd that there is such a difference between the Blu-ray and TV updates. I bought the S570 new at about the same time as a 32EX700. No S570 updates for a long time now, yet it advanced to S580 then S590 and there is a S790.

The EX700 has advanced to EX710, EX720, and now to a gaggle of models. Yet my 32EX700 had a firmware update last night. True, it was just a "network stability" update, but it seems the TV people are more consumer friendly. Even updates for XBR9 series appear on the web site.

If they did that we'd be in no rush to go out and buy a 590/790...would we?

Sorry, I meant they need to actually update the apps for Hulu+ and Amazon VOD for the x90 players. Right now they are the older ones found on the x70 and x80 series.

Hi
I have a Sony BDP-S570 and have recently purchased a WD MyBookLive 2TB NAS as external storage for my new Ipad :-) Thought I could now take advantage of the Blueray network steaming as well.
However I'm having an issue with video files. I can stream .jpeg's and .mp3's fine from the NAS. I can even stream .avi files fine, but cannot stream .mp4 files. I can play .mp4 files fine from a disc.
In the manual it says for .mp4 "The player does not play this file format on a
DLNA server."
Not entirely sure what a DNLA server is but I'm guessing that's what I've got.
If it's true that .mp4 files are not supported, then I would like to know what I can do.
My video files are in .mp4 as this is what ITunes supports and I don't want to have to hold multiple formats if I can help it.
Please, please can somebody help
Regards
Tim

I think only Apple equipment can be a source of .mp4 content. Search thread for ".mp4" and pick one of the 85 posts.

I'm just getting around to trying to connect my S370 to my network(homegroup). I didn't know it was possible, or I would have tried this much earlier. My laptop is not visible on the connection server screens, but it sees the laptop with a failed result on the connection server diagnotics screen. What do I need to do?

The S370 uses an external dongle like my TV. You might get better help on the S370 forum:

The laptop must be running a DLNA server for this to work. It's got nothing to do with windows networking and work groups.
