Panasonic DMP-BD85K Blu-Ray player Official Master/Owner's thread - Page 2

Now that I look at those closer they appear to be all H.264 files. My guess is it won't play them but may be worth a try.

You may have better luck with this site. It appears to be a legit site? Just video clips.. not entire movies.

Another question since you are in Carmel, IN are you using AT&T DSL or Brighthouse? I just happen to live in Nora just south of you.

Any idea where you saw that the 85 only uses 802.11g? If that's the case it makes the chances of returning it better.
Anyone know the answer to this?

I have Brighthouse Road Runner. I'm supposedly getting their highest speed which seems to peak in the low to mid 20s (Mb/s) for me.
I had AT&T DSL at one time and it was really slow. Don't know if it's been upgraded in the last year.

Looks like those are .avi files. The Panny does play those, btw!

I thought I read something that said it was G only. but now I am not able to find anything on it.

As far as the wireless goes does it seem to have a good range or have you been able to tell?

sounds like you have a good solid internet connection. If there are problems it must either be with the box or the content provider.

I guess there is always the option of buying a ROKU box seperate. I read good things about them.
Very nice. Were you able to play them from the SD card slot and USB?

I'm also curious to know exactly what Divx HD is, if you visit divx.com they have switched everything over to h.264 for HD content.

Range reception is excellent. Solid 5 bars (maxed).
I don't want a ROKU box. I want a BD player and ROKU box in one, which is what these things are supposed to be, right?

Well.. from what I read on divx.com it appears that this Panasonic should play those h.264 files. They are now calling them Divx HD. They have a list of blu ray players that will play them. Which include LG and Samsung.

LOL well I think they are slowly coming togehter to be one device. but I think it will be a while before you will truly see a all in one box. Only because the technologies are so new and manufacutures are trying to decide what to squeeze in. Of course alot of this relies on relationships that are made.

I did fail to mention that in theory if you are streaming video via wireless. It will not matter if it is a G or N router. G is still faster then your cable/dsl anyways.

I just checked the panny out at BB a bit ago. Nothing on the box indicates if it connects to wireless N networks.
One question I do have though is what file capability will I lose since this isn't dlna certified? The new sony x70 series got my attention but I'm questioning whether or not they will get the dlna upgrade and I also like the lg bd570 which is dlna.
At the moment they're all pretty much $249 cash & carry at BB....

The documents in the BD85 box state that the included wireless dongle does 802.11a/b/g/n. The dongle is slightly larger than a Tic Tac box and is stamped as model DY-WL10. I haven't used it yet so I can't vouch for speed or any other details. Disc playback on the BD85 so far has been excellent - tons faster and more stable than my Samsung P2550.

I assume that like the other Panasonic Blu-ray players that these do not have internal storage?

Looking at the SDHC cards available, does the class of the SDHC card matter? I see some class 6 and class 10 cards available.
How are the tray opening and disc loading times on the 85?

I replaced my Panasonic DMP-BD80K Blu-ray player with a Panasonic DMP-BD85K unit, because I wanted Netflix built into SOMETHING. I didn't want another ANYTHING to add to my entertainment center with more connections and another darn remote.

I'll also take a WIRED connection over a WIRELESS connection any day of the week for stationary equipment. I wired the rooms in my house through the attic and walls last summer with Ethernet outlets, and the Panasonic DMP-BD85K is doing a wonderful job streaming Netflix, etc. over a wired connection. There does seem to be a slight problem with words and mouths matching up in some movies when using Netflix.

Other than that, I am very pleased with the Panasonic DMP-BD85K Blu-ray player. Two thumbs up!

I don't think anyone will recommend a Class 10 SDHC card for the Panasonic DMP-BD85K unit. I'm using Class 6 SDHC cards in my Panasonic television and Panasonic Blu-ray player.

Thanks for your impressions - have you noticed faster loading times for blu-rays with the 85 > 80?

Also, anything different in build-quality or physical feel?

Oh, yeah, I've noticed faster loading times! I can't go for a two-mile walk anymore.

When I was replacing the "old" unit last Friday evening, I placed the "old" unit and new unit side-by-side. They appear to be the same size and shape and weight, except the front of the new unit is slightly different and more pleasing to my eyes.

I have a Panasonic DMP-BD85 and it does connect to wireless "N" networks and it does say so on the box and on documentation inside.

The wireless "dongle" plugs into a USB port on the back. Very easy setup and connection, streams without any problems. Blu-Ray quality and sound is excellent.

Have you tried streaming Amazon VOD in HD? I really have no significant problems with Netflix, but Amazon is hopeless.
Also, what speed is your wireless connection to a laptop or other computer? I average high teens / low 20s in Mb/s
to my laptop, which should be more than adequate.

I'm just trying to figure out if I have a defective unit or if all the BD85s have the same issues.
Thanks!

Good one - and thanks for the details...

You wouldn't happen to want to check out the enhanced audio features? I'm fascinated by the so-called "tube" sound feature. - now that I'm asking, I can't find where I read it has this feature! Would you mind looking through the menu and see if there's something like this?!

Hate to bother, but I'm trying to decide between the 85 and the Sony 470 and I appreciate your insights!

OhioLefty - great pics! Thanks...

I'm assuming you're happy?

I didn't have any idea what you were referring to. But doing a Google search, the Panasonic DMP-BD85K unit does indeed include something Panasonic calls Digital Tube Sound Simulator.

So far, I haven't found anything in the menu concerning that feature. Maybe it's something over which we have no control. I don't know at this point. So, someone out there, help us!

Check this out from Cnet.

The Digital Tube Sound Simulator doesn't appear to be very useful if it only applies to PCM audio as stated by Cnet. But It seems that Panasonic may have made some other audio improvements with this player. I may look into the 85 if/when I decide to replace my Panasonic 55.

So the screenshot shown is accessed by pressing the "Display" button on the remote control, selecting "Audio", and then selecting "Sound Effects". There are indeed quite a few "Sound Effects" available, including three Digital Tube Sounds, but it's off to bed for me right now, as I've got to go to work in the morning.

Thanks for the pics. I DO remember seeing the "wi-fi certified" logo on the box, but guess all I saw were colored boxes and didn't notice the a,b,g,n plastered right in front of me

So far this one sounds like a great candidate. Anyone else have any comparisons to the lg bd570?

Has anyone other than atye tried Amazon VOD HD? I'm curious if others are experiencing the same problems that he is.
