My new 47" LCD smells ... break in period???

My new 47" LCD Vizion VL470 smells up a large room when it's on. It's been on 3 days, about 5 hours per day. Is this a normal break in odor ? Or should I be anticipating something else before the 30 day return policy ends???

There is no break in period. There is something wrong with the TV return replace it berfore is starts a fire.

Uh, that's definitely NOT normal. You need to take it back and quick. Hopefully, you have it in a non-combustible area.

I assume you meant Vizio and not Vizion.

how much does it smell?

this is sort of normal, Sony LCD TV's do it when brand new. my 32XBR6 did it for the first week i had it

smelled like burning electronics

I recently also went to my local Fry's to see if they had any new TV models and sure enough they got a few of the Sony and Samsung sets and i could smell the same thing there as long as i was within 10 feet of one of the Sony's

its normal. it will go away in about a week and as long as its not smoking you got nothing to worry about.

these replies are a joke right? dude that smell is normal, all tvs do that, that guy above wants you to return the tv because he wants you to have a bad time obviously and he seems to enjoy that,

all new tvs have that smell for a week or even 2 weeks.

no not all TV's do it

in the past month i've bought 3 TVs

Toshiba LCD

Panasonic LCD and a plasma

never got the smell with any of them.


it is common on some brands though, Sony is one of them for sure.

All samsungs i bought and the one sony i have did this for a week or two, its a smell of a brand new electronic i dont know why it does it but i think its the components burning in

I see above though how the guy was telling the OP to return his tv and that its defective , hes an A hole trying to make people's lifes miserable for no reason, i reported him aswell.

While i agree with you in that they are incorrect in their statements, i'm pretty sure it has to do with them not having experienced this before rather than trying to be an A-hole

well either way why would he tell the guy to return his TV (trust me, he knows its a HASSLE to return a big 47 inch tv) and he was leaning on that fact to try and make the OP feel bad,

im telling you, if not a tv, anyone in the world must have bought some kind of an electronic that smelled when they just got it and turned it on, i call it a brand new electronic smell Anyone should know this

yes and no, many people do not buy tons of electronics

the smell i'm fairly sure comes from certain types of circuit board coatings that they apply to protect the connections from shorting out due to moisture, the type of coating determines if it smells this way and many electronics do not use the type that produce this smell when new but conversely many also due but the smell is often not to the extent you get with some of these new TV's

regardless the 2 people who posted that he should return the TV due to the smell said that based on their own experience *as everyone does around here* and they should not be punished for not experiencing it or knowing that it can be a completely normal thing for brand new electronics and is harmless to my knowledge and will definitely go away in a week or two at most.

OK, I don't know which one of us is the "A-Hole" referred to above, but this particular "A-Hole" was trying to give valid advice. I'm sorry you got the wrong message, but as one who has only bought two LCDs in the past two years, neither one of which smelled during the break-in period, I'm a bit offended that you think I was trying to be a smart-ass.

As frito said, I was speaking from my own experiences and anyone who tried to make more out of it than it was is completely wrong.

OK, two things...

1. I have a van so returning a 47" TV would be no hassle at all for me.

2. I'd rather err on the side of caution than say it's normal since no matter what you say, I have never experienced the break-in smell of new electronics whether it's TVs, receivers, BR players, or whatever.

Sorry if you were offended. I was NOT trying to make the OP feel bad!!!

i was not talking to you, i was talkin to walford. and returning a tv is a hassle, not everyone has a van you know, some people need to CARRY the box to the store or take it to UPS or fedex to ship it back depending on the scenario .. its not easy, trust me, i returned a 46 incher to pc richards 3 years ago, oh boy..

im not sure how you didnt smell though, any electronic almost has that smell, my imac, iphone , what not.. its a smell of a NEW ELECTRONIC

You're right. Any new electronics hardware is going to smell, and based on my experience with a number of Samsung units over the past few months, the odor that emerges from an LCD TV can smell like burning plastic.

the OP never said its a burning smell, he said that it just smelled, which is for sure what i always expirience with the sammy tvs, its a scent that i cant describe.. i actually like that smell cheers.

Btw mike returned his sets because they were defective.

Mike, did you manage to check what Panel the 37 C550s come with? i saw in the other thread you found out all the 40 C550s had the C panel in your town.

Not to beat a dead horse (well, maybe I am), but I'm guessing the TV doesn't smell when it's turned off and just sitting on the stand or in the entertainment center. Sooooo... If it smells only when it's on, it's just a wild guess that the electricty used to power the TV emits heat which creates some sort of "burning" smell.

Some people have a much more keen sense of smell than others. I've been able to smell "new electronics" on some devices but not others. I'd advise the OP to look very carefully for any visible smoke or scorching on the tv's cabinet and feel around for any extremely hot spots, if none are detected then keep it as long as possible within the return period to see if the smell fades away. If it doesn't return the set.

But, Yikes, stripes, guys. Sorry if I stirred something up.

By the way, with a name like Jane32XBR, I'm a GAL not a guy, but no biggie.
It's a Vizio VL470M and there aren't any more 47" Vizios in this region, so I'm reluctant to return it.

My Samsung LN52B630 also had odoriferous emanations, but they faded away approximately 25 days after purchase.
Just out of curiosity (sales staff must of thought I was nuts) I went to best Buy and started sniffing around the backs of numerous TV's'.
I discovered that about half had that same electrical smell. (therefore I conclude this is normal)

My Lenovo T61 has that same smell, but it never faded away.
Took it to Tech Advanced Computers, and they said nothing was wrong.
