there's more, lots more hidden. press and hold the the exit key on the remote for 15 seconds. the tv will turn off, then press mute 182 power as soon as the tv is fully off. you'll now see an extended menu for expert and svc. another hidden option is for 1080p 48hz!

The decision to enter the service menu should not be made lightly. One wrong press of a button can totally ruin your display. It's not worth it.

You should be able to properly calibrate your display with just the User Menu settings.

no ones trying to calibrate from the SM. Turning on or getting different options should not effect anything else. It's safe. Trying to calibrate while in the SM is a different story.

Methinks this deserves further investigation....What other options/settings are available to modify?

Do we know how to safely navigate and exit this extended menu/service menu without making permanent changes or making things buggy?

Yup. It's pretty easy actually. I put my tv into hotel mode VIA SM.

I'll bite. What's "hotel mode"?

Whenever you turn on your set. It will always turn on a certain input and channel. Regardless of whatever input you had it on last. I think you can set it to turn on at a certain time as well. I didn't turn on that feature so I can't remember clearly.

With regards to the lifespan and not shortening it. What are the best settings to keep my brightness, cell light, contrast, dynamic contrast, or any of the other settings at. This Sammy 42c450 is my first plasma. Im asking in general and not regarding picture quality. I also seem to notice an occasional flash of light like a dot of light almost instantaneously on this display. I dont know if my eyes are playing tricks on me or this is just something inherent to plasma technology. Anyone?? Thanks. Dave
post #1479 of 1729
I wouldn't worry about extending the life of the set. These things take forever to die. Just don't have your cell light maxed out and you'll be fine. Even if you did have it maxed out. It still most likely wouldn't make a difference as something else is bound to fail before your panel fails.

Thanks jukebox. With regards to my occasional flashes of light i was seeing on my display that I thought my eyes were playing tricks..... a firmware update was released 02/09/2011. ....u ask what the update was for....the description of the update for 42c450 was " to prevent red spots and sparks on the screen"..... I guess I WAS seeing flashes of light on the screen. I got the update on a USB drive and gonna install it tonight. There is a firmware update for some of these models FYI.

Just piping in to thank everyone for their participation, and guidance. Been following this thread for about 2 months now, as it went a long way toward my choosing this model (50C450) - luckily, mine is not a buzzer; nor are there any inherent problems with it, just a great picture, and a pretty decent sound (once you tweak the EQ) - no need for a sound bar, as this is a bedroom set! Once again, thank you all.

Thanks for this update and for the tip on the new firmware. I'm downloading it now and will give it a go.

Also, congrats on the new set dssr01 and welcome!

I downloaded the newest firmware for the 50c450 and it seems to have messed up my set. Movie mode has odd multi-colored dithering everywhere and I now have random pixels going dark on me.
Exactly why if there is nothing wrong with a set. You should never update the set. You don't fix something that isn't broken.
Well took the Sammy back. Could not stand the random flashing sparks of light when I was watching the movie channels. Picked up the same model. I hope this one does not do that . I really like this panel and for the price I cant come close to a 42 inch lcd for 445.00 with 120Hz. Sammy tech support said probably my cable box was causing the issue. Hmmm....... we will see. I also already had the latest firmware even though my panel was manufactured in 12/2010 and the update was released 02/09/2011

Sounds exactly like it was the source. Not the TV.

I had this same issue with mine when hooked up to my dish tv box if the output was set to 1080i (particularly during hockey games for some reason) switching to 720p alleviated the "flashing"

Jukebox. Is what i am seeing "shimmering pixels"? If so do particular settings increase that or make it more noticeable if indeed that is what i am seeing?

Does anyone have a copy of the old 1008.1 firmware handy? The new 1008.2 is problematic to say the least. DO NOT USE. Causes significant picture degradation.

Me too. I just sold my 46" LCD toshiba that just died, only had it for two years, for a hundred bucks as-is (dud), its wasn't worth much more if it as working when you factor in what you can buy today. Got the sammy 50" plasma, never been happier, the PQ is night and day over the toshiba. Now all my remotes work, toshbia even has a name for this problem that toshiba LCDs cause, its labeled as "IR swap" , surfing cable tv is now pleasure not a headache. If I add up the price of the two year dead toshiba and the price I paid for the new 50" plasma, its still less than if I would of gotten the a 50" plasma two years ago. The best thing toshiba ever did was to die an early death. It a win win.

Okay so I bought a PS3 Slim last week and I find the games to look blurry compared to the 360. I use optimal resolution on the 360, the PS3 does not have this option so I set it to 720P. I have two copies of Black Ops and it looks blurry on the PS3 and super crisp on the 360, also tried Red Dead Redemption and same thing. I went back on the 360 and set the resolution to 720P and it looks exactly how it does on the PS3.. like shxt.. Setting it to 720P clearly makes the games on both consoles look like crap.

I have the 42" so I know the resolution is lower for people who have the 50" version. I've used HDMI only on both consoles and I have tried messing around with game mode, settings, and sharpness. The 360 looks gorgeous on this set. Why is it that it looks so.... blurry on the PS3? Is there anything I can do to make it looks as crisp as it does on the 360 when I use optimal resolution? I have been messing with the TV all week.

Thanks in advance.

I downloaded the very same current firmware (T-SAT4AUSHC) and when I attempt to install it, my set told me that it was the same version already installed. I have no problems of any kind with my set!!

Looks like you dodged a bullet. Congrats!
To say that it ruined my TV is an understatement. I literally started getting dead pixels within 10 minutes. I would get a purple shimmer on everything.
I have to wait a week for Best Buy to order me a replacement TV. I already had 190 hours on it so now I have to start over again..

Did you follow all the firmware update instructions including allowing the TV to optimize itself after the update before using it?!?!?!

Followed the instructions verbatim and it still killed my set.
Do not upgrade to 1008.2! I'm now out a set for weeks while Samsung goes through their protocol. Stinks.

Yep,same here. This update has some serious problems. Make sure not to turn the set back on.Since it was supposed to fix the issue some are having with the red dots while watching the TV, I'm thinking it did some sort of voltage adjustment. Whatever it did started causing dead pixels on my set when I restarted it a few times trying to see if I could fix it. You might end up permanently damaging your panel so be careful.

Some good info in this thread. I just picked up PN42C450 for my bedroom. Overall it seems like a pretty good set, it can't hold a candle to my 52" Sharp Aquos Quattron 920, but, I knew that going in. Just wanted a solid set for my bedroom.

All it takes is one wrong button depressed.
