Ahh so this is some kind of stupid HDCP/HDMI issue apparently. My old TV from 2007 passed 5.1 through the optical port. Maybe that was a fluke?

Jukebox is right. You will only get stereo via optical out on almost any tv unless your source feed is direct coaxial (ie: ota tv or the like) with that you can get 5.1 or whatever via optical.

Do you see the "red static" in the programming, or only when there is a black screen? I was experiencing red blotches when the set was first turned on (black screen) and I could see it in dark scene changes. I never really saw it in the background of programming.

I set up a warranty service call for it. An hour or so later, they called back and said it is a known issue and there is a firmware upgrade to correct it. The said it is not one that is available from their website, and they'd have to send it to me on a jump drive. I installed it when the drive arrived and the problem went away. Pretty simple fix.

Both for sure...It's gotten progressively worse...

I'll give Samsung a shout and do this firmware thing...Thanks a bunch...

Till this happened this Plasma has had an outstanding picture...And just FYI to others...I have absolutely ZERO buzz on this set...

Got on Samsung's site and got involved in the "Live Chat"...

The person provided me a link to the Firmware Download (Not sure if it's the same as the one on the site)...And the Instructions on how to download it to a USB Memory Stick...The File is T-SAT4AUSHC.exe

Popped it in the side USB port on the Plasma and within 3 minutes???

PERFECT...Took every bit of that annoying red bloom away...

I made some drastic adjustments to the white balance and came up with something a lot more natural than before....Still a bit off, but much better.

Movie, Cell light 0, Contrast 97, Brightness 56, Color 52, Tint 51/49, Warm 1, and everything else either off or out of auto. WB adjusted R gain to min (0) and then G & B gains to max (50).

It definitely turned white from a pink to almost white...

Why? And question. Does it accept 1080P like this set did?

I too received a PN51D450 in exchange for my defective PN50C450 from B&H Photo. Have had it set up for two days now and I am thrilled with its performance so far. No buzz, no DSE/banding/streaking, minimal floating blacks PLUS you get an additional 1" of screen at no additional cost or size to the unit. A steal of a plasma for the price it is currently going for. For those on the fence between the two models I would strongly recommend going for the D series.

That doesn't answer the 1080P question

I can check tonight to see if it accepts 1080p. I can't see why it wouldn't. Most 720p sets for the past 3 years could do this.

Never did understand why people choose to do this though... just ads to the processing lag and makes little/no difference to the picture.

Native resolution is always the preferred option in my book!

Just tried it out and 1080p in = no problem on the d450.

Thanks. Guess I'll be looking into this model after all. Did they fix the whole red level push issue? Or is the content still a bit red?

Have not hooked up my color meter yet to measure grayscale so can't comment on this one.

What about to the human eye. You should be able to see if there is to much red push. Skin tones would looks a bit more red then normal.

Great to hear! Do you notice a difference regarding black levels and color? Samsung also mentioned that they improved their motion for their 2011 plasma's.

Did Samsung mention an improvement in blacks for the d450? I have a c450 and was just curious...

I know they mentioned improved daytime blacks in the 2010 c450 vs. the b450 due to the addition of small black spacers in the pixels....I can attest that my c450 blacks look quite LCDishly black in daytime / sunlight / fluorescent lighting....but once its midnight and the lights go out, you can tell the black levels aren't very inky...still black vs. the LCD purple/blue....its not an issue on 16:9 content, though...the blacks still look ok then...but on dark or dim nighttime scenes you can tell the black levels struggle in terms of depth....

You can only expect so much from a budget display, but for it the class it's in, the 450 holds it's own.

Main reason why i got the D450 was the buzzing with the C450. When walking past it i could hear it buzzing when laying in bed at low volumes 10ft away the buzz was omnipresent.

Another thing that I'm now noticing is that the D450 scrolling feature shows no vertical banding whatsoever!.

One of my break-in slides is black and in a dark room the TV appears to melt into the darkness when this slide is playing. More pix this weekend when i get a proper cam.

It appears there is little improvement in regards to black level from what I can see. I do notice that the screen switches off when an all black signal is received and I cannot seem to disable like I could with the C450.
My guess is this is part of the more aggressive energy star requirements for 2011.

The colors on the other hand appear to have less dithering. Particularly tertiary colors appear solid and less grainy/washed out.

Skin tones look good to me on Warm2. This setting appears slightly less warm then it was on the C450 and it does not suffer from the green tint in dark areas as much.

Motion is crisp, but I never had any complaints in this category with the C450.

Speakers seem to be the same... decent.

Remote is the same but shrunken! It looks like someone shot the old one with a shrinking ray and scaled it to 80% its size. Pretty funny, but a welcome change. The old one was huge.

One less HDMI port. You now only get the two on the back.

Lastly, I've been noticing the plasma banding that plagues all plasma sets seems greatly reduced on this model from the C450. I used to clearly see this effect during car commercials when they list the terms of the lease at the end. Now it appears much less pronounced.

Picked up a PN51D450A2D @ BB last nite. Im planning on leaving tv on 24 hrs a day for 5 days.When I go to bed I will put on full screen HBO.Does that sound ok for breakin?

When I had my PN50C450 I was a extremely focused on breaking it in.
So I proceeded to run the slides 24/7 on DNice's suggested torch settings.
After close to 150 hours of break-in I felt it would be OK to use it. You know what? IR still happened. Still had to use the scroll wipe feature occasionally to clear the screen.
So after this C450 set got damaged from the 1008.2 firmware update and I received my new PN51D450 I decided to give up on the obsessive break-in nonsense. I basically run it on Movie mode and turn down the Cell Light to 6/7 and the Contrast & Brightness to 65 max. I'm much happier with this process and I love not having to wait to enjoy this beauty.
The problem with 24/7 break-ins is if something goes wrong like a power outage or a hardware failure you can really damage things. For instance I discovered the break-in slides I was using via USB stick did not fill the screen entirely so after days of break-in I had a 1/2" vertical band on both sides of the screen from uneven phosphor usage. I strongly believe the risks far out way the benefits of this type of hardcore break-in.
My advice is turn down the settings and avoid 4:3 or letter-boxed material for a few weeks. Meanwhile enjoy your new purchase with whatever content you want!

Four plasmas later and absolutely no break in with exception to setting brightness and contrast to 50 and/or 60%. Have never had an issue with IR and/or PQ.

Installed my 42C450 about 2 months ago. Never broke it in. Have cell light set about 50 and contrast about 75. I honestly have not yet once seen any IR. And the picture is fantastic. Love the image on this TV as much if not more than the 52" 1080p LCD I also have.
