Samsung PNXXc450 Owners Thread *NO PRICE TALK* - Page 30

Thanks Tyler and aydu....you've give me HOPE!!! I figure there was nothing else about the set that I could complain about, so if I can get a non-buzzing one...I will be golden!

My buzzer was definitely worse than your guys. Like I said on another post, I could hear it from 8 feet away, all the way up to a volume of 25! Good to know my set was bad, and there are good sets out there. I'll report back when it's here.

Also note that the buzz does lessen with age, when my set was new I wanted to return it due to the annoying buzz (it was almost silent most of the time, but still there) now I only hear it when a white screen comes on and even then it is quite faint.

Rusty,

Install of new warranty panel went well....NO BUZZ, and no more sprinkles, for now, ha ha....I am happy with Samsung's response and how they dealt with this issue. Wish they had replaced the TV altogether, but with all of the parts they replaced it basically is....only thing the same is the frame and the back. Call for warranty repair if you are still in warranty.

Good luck,

Just got my TV a few days ago. No buzzing problems so far. I haven't heard anything unless I put my ear right up to the TV. Going from a 32" LCD to this is a nice big step. Using a variation of settings and it works just fine.

When I am very close to the screen, I can see red and green pixles in the image, but when I back up it does smooth out and isnt a problem. Is that normal?

The picture seems to have a slight haze to it, or is not very sharp. Not sure because I am in break in mode and the settings are very low, but I did test it with some of the settings here and it still seemed like it wasnt as sharp as it could be.

Again these could be because I am used to looking at a superior panel, but if everyone else has the same experience I am fine...

Those are dancing pixels; I returned the LG PK 550 because the screen was covered with red and green dancing pixels. I'm thinking of returning the Samsung and get a Panasonic C2. Youtube "dancing pixels" I don't know if this is normal. It has nothing to do with the TV being a 720p; the LG was a 1080p and it also was covered with dancing pixels.

I had an S2, and the floating blacks were terrible. There's a big huge 30 page thread on the forums here. Just search for "panasonic floating blacks." Apparently it wasn't around in the 2009 models.

It is called dithering, and it is only obvious at normal seating distances if your set is highly miscalibrated (mostly brightness cranked to high) or if your set is defective.

All Plasma sets use dithering to get better color gradients. (and Samsung is regarded as the best once they are broken in, the dithering diminishes greatly after about 150 hours) Panasonic is considered one of the worst, as they use a very nasty motion adaptive dither that makes objects in motion look really noisy. (samsung does this as well when the sets are new, but it seems to go away after the 150 hour mark)

Dither on my 42" c450 has reduced significantly since initial use as well...

I have been looking into buying the PN42C450 for the past couple weeks. I went to my local Best Buy tonight to pick it up, but they had it displayed right next to a Panny TC-P42C and the picture of the Sammy had a pretty noticeable reddish/pink tint to it compared to the Panny. I'm just wondering if that's just the tint this TV has or if it could changed by tweaking picture settings?

Picture tweaks will fix that. The Panny probably had a heavy green tint as well.

David: Sounds like they gave you a new TV piece by piece. I'm glad to hear that Samsung took care of you and that the sprinkles are gone (and no buzz is a plus).

Mine is only 5 months old so it has plenty of warranty I'm going to give them a call and start the process. Thanks for the follow up, much appreciated.

The samsung you have is a great TV. Plasma's work in a completely different way and as you can see from this thread, are not always just plug and play. The PQ and blacks cant be beat (not including the new LED backlit LCDs), but plasmas just arent as bright as an LCD, you will definitely notice.

I have owned the TV for two days and am still sorting it out. Currently I have only been watching movies through netflix and mediacenter through my XBOX 360 with the VGA cable so I am not able to access all the picture options (because of using the VGA cable) and am getting very slight flicker because of the 60hz refresh. I am going to switch to a composite cable and see how that compares.

Interestingly, I liked the settings I used in the beginning of setup (starting with Standard picture mode) and find the settings people are using on this thread to blow out the reds and put a haze over everything. But both kinds of settings (mine and the ones on this thread) put a slight greenish hue generally only visible on whites. This was visible even on a black and white movie I watched.

It's still pretty early for me to post I think so I will be sorting out my setup some more over the next few days. I have a decent macro lense I think it wont be hard to capture the "black lines" that exist between the pixels.

Just wanted to let people know my new one buzzes, and it's going back.

It's not quite as bad as the last one, but I can hear it. It already has the most recent firmware also.

It's just too bad that something about this TV forces it to buzz (power supply?). This is not normal at all. I'm glad some people don't hear it or can put up with it, but it is absolutely present.

Cheers everyone.

I just bought this tv and there is no buzz coming from the tv.And the tv has a stunning picture.
I do not recommend using the VGA input, it is downright awful for getting a decent picture. I switched from the VGA cable to the stock composite cable on the XBOX 360 and am getting great color now. I am using EE-Engineers settings, I am getting much better color balance than anything else I have found people using here:

MODE: MOVIE, CELL LIGHT: 8, CONTRAST 80, BRIGHTNESS 56
SHARPNESS: 20, COLOR 37, TINT G36/R64

ADVANCED: BLACK LEVEL OFF, DYN CONT OFF, GAMMA +1 COLORSPACE: AUTO
WHITE BALANCE: Roff: 32, Goff: 28, Boff: 20 Rgain: 44, Ggain: 29, Bgain: 37

OPTIONS: COLOR TEMP: WARM-2

If you have an xbox just remember to set the proper res in the xbox settings, I am also using intermediate on the black setting in the xbox settings also.

Here is the photo of the black lines between the gas tubes of the display:

I would sit at least 6' back from the 42" so you cant see the lines.

Has anyone tested the composite vs hdmi cable on the xbox360?
I don't have much buzzing on the TV, I have to put my ear right next to the TV to hear anything. I definitely received my TV upright, there was a device on the box to show that it wasnt laid on it's side. I bought through crutchfield and they shipped with CEVA logistics, I am not sure who put that device on the box.

I also had trouble with putting the screws in the stand. An impact drill with a screw bit took care of that, that tip is at your own risk.

THANK YOU!

I have been trying to get pictures of those blasted lines for months to no avail, it is great to finally have an image to reference and back up my posts about them.

Most of the power supply buzz is due to the magnetostrictive properties of the transformers used in the power supplies. Simply put, the ferromagnetic components (usually cores) inside the transformers vibrate slightly in response to electrical excitation. If the core is tape-wrapped for galvanic (think UL) isolation, the windings and core can slap against the tape (or each other) and then the "hum" becomes a "buzz."

It's fundamentally a QC issue with the component (magnetics) supplier, as it can be reduced by (1) oversizing the core so that it's not operating near saturation (i.e., not working as hard), and (2) encapsulating the transformer assembly with a thermosetting plastic of some sort (known colloquially as "sheep dip"). This raises the cost (and compliance issues) of the component, which may be a problem in an industry where penny-counting has become crucial.

I just bought the pn42c450 tonight. I love it so far. My settings are:

Movie
Cell 8
Contrast 77
Everything else at 50
Warm 2
Whats a good sharpness setting? Is it okay to run the cell at 10 right away or should i wait for break in? And once it is broken in is it safe to jack up the contrast level to 95-100?

Well, as far as sharpness, I have my 50C450 set at 20, but I believe I've seen recommendations that it be 0. I used the calibration CD on this site to set mine.

I'm thinking about picking up one of these, I have no clue how to set the calibration is easy as said? I would also like to know about the calibraton CD. All this buzzing complaints about the samsung is making me worry

Going off topic a little do LED's need to be calibrated also?
FWIW, I've heard no buzzing from my set whatsoever.

There is a firmware update on Samsung's site to address this, but I haven't applied it, because, "If it ain't broke..."
Have to laugh at the "firmware update" to address what is undoubtedly a hardware/fabrication/assembly issue. Yeah, right: Automatic Brightness Limiter on steroids to keep that drive/buzz current down.

What's next -- carmakers transmitting "firmware updates" to your iPod to fix your flat tire? (I know: "Inhibit vehicle velocity to less than 10 MPH so the vehicle can be driven to a repair facility without assistance.")
does the older PS42B450 suffers from the same problem ?
Just wanted to say thanks for all the info. I've been enjoying my 42c450 now for a couple of weeks. What a great bargain! Only complaint is the flesh tones seem a little to red. Maybe with some more tweeking it will be savvy!
