your settings look pretty good! not much of a difference from THX, but i think they've made my picture just a tiny bit "richer" or more saturated. i'm curious as to what the rest of your settings are in Custom mode, including the pro settings. assuming you changed any of them, that is.

also, the standard mode, as randy said, isn't going to give you the greatest picture. try THX mode as a comparison. if you like that, you can always copy the settings from it over to the Custom mode and then tweak them to your personal preference.

Camster, gonna try your settings now. i'll post back in a few.

Good to know about the C.A.T.S...much appreciated. I guess I just need to find some settings that make the picture less grainy.

I also noticed that my friend, who has the G10, has a much nicer picture on standard definition channels than my G20. Both cable boxes are set at 480I and neither TVs picture settings have been changed. Thanks again for the info.

What is your source for HD? If it's cable or U-Verse then there's part of your problem right there. Also, some HD channels look better than others. Some HD content looks better than others.

Standard mode isn't all that great - Custom mode is better for HD and SD programming. THX is more for watching DVD Movies but some people use it for HD as well, but for HD i'd use Custom.

Who is your cable/satellite provider?

Can you connect an antenna and check the picture quality of OTA HD?

Contrast is 100, brightness and color is 50 and sharpness is 75.

Those are HORRIBLE settings !! 100 Contrast coupled with 75 Sharpness cannot possibly look good.

I played with a 50G25 in a dark area at Fry's about a week ago. It looked like crap so i grabbed the remote and started playing with the different Picture modes and settings and i got it to look really good in Custom mode with their decent store feed. Try these as a starting point for HD (going by memory) and do them in this order:

Set your HD Provider's box/receiver to output a 1080i signal only. Disable all the other resolutions.

Use HDMI.

Use CUSTOM mode

Change the Color Temp to Warm 2

Set HD Size to Size 2

Turn CATS Off (and turn off Color Management, NR, etc too)

Now set your Contrast in the 60-70 range

Brightness in the 40-50 range

Set Sharpness on the low end - like maybe 10 to 30 range for starters.

Set Color and Tint till they look natural and not overly saturated

Also, something really alarming just happened while watching hockey...the picture all of a sudden became much darker and dull. The ice isn't as bright and looks almost grey. This is now much more of a concern than the grainy feed. Its like someone turned down all my settings. I'm getting a bad feeling about this TV...maybe I have a dud.

Not likely, you just have to set it up properly. Maybe the CATS setting was enabled - if so turn it off.

Thanks! Not really much else. Sharpness is still at 75 even though it seems kind of high. I still have Color Mgnt on, Mosquito Noise Reduction? on & Blur Reduction On. I haven't changed any Pro settings either.

I haven't played with these much yet either but overall these settings seem to look pretty good. They are similar to what I ran with my G10 with the Contrast about 5-10 lower due to the G20 being a brighter set.

Yes, it didn't look too good...those settings are the default settings in standard mode right out of the box. Why do they have such terrible settings as the default? Looking forward to trying out your settings...thank you.

Question for you guys, should I even use game mode for gaming? Other than increasing contrast what else does it do?

At first I figured it was just the TV preventing itself from burn-in because of channel logos, but now I'm not sure. Does this happen to anyone else?

This happened to me and I just decided to try a new HDMI cable before getting really pissed and it totally solved my issue...

quick question...does EVERY g20 tv have this floating black problem? trying to decide if i need to grab this tv up or not..if so, is there any info if they are going to fix it with a firmware update? im seeing places that panasonic is saying its a new "Feature" and some people are saying that they are getting repairmen out to them to fix this problem

I'm curious about what the game mode actually does as well. Obviously default contrast is high, but that can be tuned to the users liking.

What I did notice is that by switching between 3 picture modes (THX, Game and Custom) at the same settings (the ones D-Nice has listed for THX: contrast 57, brightness 56, color 49, tint 0, sharpness 10-11, everything else off), the game picture mode is the only one that crushes blacks. It completely loses detail in dark areas, even when brightness is turned up to 100. The only way to see the shadow detail is to map the color space incorrectly by changing the HDMI RGB range on the G20 to Nonstandard but leaving the PS3 on limited and the 360 reference level on standard (not expanded). This fixes the black crush but obviously washes out the color and makes true black grey.

I could get Custom to crush blacks at the same settings, but only by changing the default gamma from 2.2 to 2.6

So my guess is its the default gamma that they changed in game mode. Since gamma is not adjustable in the game picture mode I can't be sure, but like I said, it's the only way I could get custom to look like game.

I'd like to use game because the color saturation and balance look best for gaming to my eyes, but the black crush is a deal-breaker. Custom for games and THX for blu-ray on the PS3 are more than good enough for now.

Mine is probably about 8 feet away and it looks fine (50").

Connecting to the Internet: Sorry for yet another question on this but I searched the threads and didn't find the info I am hoping to find....

I just got the G25 and would like to connect it to my comcast internet. I currently have cable connected from the wall directly to the TV in the living room, and the internet connected to my modem and wireless router in a nearby bedroom. What would be the best way to get my tv hooked up to the internet? Should I get a 2nd wireless router and connect it to the tv? I tried getting a wireless usb adaptor and it didn't work... I presume I will have to wait for the panasonic wireless adaptor to come out (Anyone know when it will be released?!). Thanks for any advice. As you can tell, I'm a bit of a newbie.

No problem you're welcome. You may find you prefer things a bit different going forward but they'll be a good starting point with the set.

If you want to do it wirelessly, I used this. And if you want to connect more than one device, then add a cheap switch.

Yeah, unless you really like the crushed blacks and vivid color of Game mode, Custom or THX will look a lot better. Game mode doesn't do anything different from any of the other picture modes there's no reason to use it.

Not being proactive and just being plain stupid, I didn't know that I should break in my set and was watching it for a week on the default standard picture mode with 100 contrast, 50 for brightness and color and 75 sharpness. Yesterday I put on Dnice's settings. I've noticed that the picture is really inconsistent. For instance, on 60 Minutes in HD one frame looks great and then the next frame is really grainy. When watching hockey, the ice changes color, becomes really bright and has a greenish hue. I can't find a setting to make the ice look naturally white, but also not be too bright. Is is too late to break properly break in my TV? Anyone have any good settings for viewing hockey? Thanks

Actually you were breaking it in you were watching it. There is no consequence to watching the tv. I suspect you have C.A.T.S on which can makes the "brightness " fluctuate. Turn that off in the advanced setup menu under the picture settings. Besides the default Standard even with 100 Contrast is dim unless C.A.T.S is turned off. My 55 Contrast in Custom is brighter than 100 in Standard with CATS on.

I'm watching a pile of hockey on mine currently. It looks very good.

Go to Custom & set Contrast to 55, Brightness to 48, WARM2, Colour to about 45 & see how that looks. If the ice is a little too yellow for your liking then go to WARM1. I use the Mosquito something setting too which seems to improve compression artifacts from crappy HD cable a little which is what may be happening with 60 Minutes.

the easiest route i think would be buying the dongle, i saw vanns has one on their site that says available soon. I'm not familiar with bridges so i cant say anything about that.

Don't have my set yet but interested in knowing how to adjust it to make the colours in THX mode pop a little more. Any suggestions are welcome.

so im on my second g20 and im playing a video game on the ps3 and the picture craps out. i had redish and purple verticle bars all across the screen. i thought it was the ps3 but sure enough i switched to cable input and it remained. not only were there bars but also the picture was in each bar if that makes sense.

so it looks like this g20 is going back as well....

I never see any problem with my picture or blacks. When a top quality HD is playing it's so nice. Picture colors are so real. Is there a way I can see what you mean? I look all the time for black problems and can't find them. I don't game if that's part of the problem.

A word of advice....DON'T try to find these nuances of imperfection. Once you do, it will become bothersome for you.

If you do not see the issue, it's possible it's not there. Which model do you have?

What is the difference between a G20 and a G25? On the 2010 Panasonic page, the G25's are only listed?

I thought I read this floating black issue was in the 2009 sets, the 2010 models would not have this issue. Yes/No?

Never the less, my 54G25 is coming tomorrow!

Ha anyone got the Wifi setup, if so what adapter did you use?

During dark scenes the TV adjusts brightness automatically. Sometimes it spikes it up and then goes back down right after. It's hard to explain it unless you see it.

Someone made a video of it:

I regret to say that I had to return my G20 yesterday because of this exact problem.
I really liked the TV, but this annoying thing took over. I've watched several episodes of
Battlestar Galactica (that show has a lot of dark/medium dark footage) and it was
too much to handle for me - black level was jumping up and down constantly.
I've tried to play with different brightness levels, but that seemed to had no effect.

Nope. I don't know what you read, but the 2009 models don't have the floating black issue, while some people are seeing it on the 2010 models. It was also present on some older Panasonic models. Calibrator D-Nice stated that he eliminated by reducing the Brightness setting.
