Thanks for this info (and to the original poster). I've had my TV (50g20) for about a week and was wondering if rebuilding the stand would help it be more vertical - now I know not to bother.

I haven't experienced any floating blacks (but my viewing room is not very dark).

My unit does buzz. Most of the time it's fairly quiet (not really audible from my viewing position, ~10 feet away), but occasionally it gets really loud. It even managed to drown out a commercial a few days ago! What's strange is that the buzz changes dramatically based on screen content, but not from the usual suspects - I hardly get any buzz during white scenes, such as with hockey.

Has anyone been able to identify factors that affect the buzz? Will it quiet down over time?

This buzzing is starting to get me a bit concerned... I am planning to buy the 50" G-20 very soon and I sure wish this buzzing was non-existent... Getting to be numerous people reporting this now.. I assume it's electrical in nature (as opposed to something being loose) and cannot be quieted???

I've had my g20 for 5 days now and I've yet to hear any buzz from my couch. The only time I was aware of it was when was right up close to swivel it.

On my previous Sammy PN50B850 I was able to run break in slides from a USB key. Can I do the same on the G20? People seem to prefer the SD card just wondering if both are an option.
I have a P50G20 and I think the people that hear a buzz from viewing distance have faulty units or they're from krypton and their super hearing is being enhanced by our yellow sun...

In all seriousness though, the only time I can hear buzzing of any kind is if I put my head behind the unit about 3-4 inches from it. There is no buzzing of any kind from the front...not even from a foot away. I've probably watched 70ish hours on it since hooking it up and never heard a rise in the buzzing even when I mute the TV and am sitting in dead silence.

I've returned 2 Samsung's with loud buzzing. I noticed that with the G20 it only has a sightly hum when cold, and bright white slide. This is during break in. When watching TV I hear nothing, the Samsung's buzzed over the volume of the TV. So far I can say the Blacks on this tv are superior to both the 860 and the 650. Unfortunately i'm not keeping this TV, its just a keep till my return goes though and find some thing else. If I knew for sure the blacks wouldn't rise I might think of keeping though.

^^^^ maybe try the Color Management option in picture settings? It is supposed to help with blues and greens - it may or may not help your problem.

Having burned in the 50 inch G20 TV in the spare room, I moved it to the living room today to watch some TV. Fantastic picture. I have been getting occasional very brief black screens, its connected via component for now. About 2 - 3 times an hour I'd guess. Of a much greater concern is the buzz. I'm at altitude and I hear this can exacerbate the buzzing issue, but this is loud. It varies depending on brightness of the display, and is very intrusive from about 10 ft away with a bright screen. We replacemed a Phillips. 42 plasma (720p) and that TV is whisper quiet compared to this one. I'm not looking forward to running the gauntlet of a Sears return (and likely restocking fee). Anyone got tips on how I can get the TV replaced or refunded. As far as I'm concerned that TV is unusable to me in its current condition.

Yes, that's what I did with my 50G20. I used a Sandisk Cruzer USB thumb drive.

FYI, two of the red slides in the aging slides recommended by D-Nice are duplicates but that isn't a problem.

As some others have stated, I can only hear slight buzzing when I place my head behind the unit. Nothing from the front and it certainly isn't noticeable while sitting on my couch, ~10ft away.

I also get this while using my 360 at 1080i over component and the Wii at 480P does not do it over component. I have never had this happen over HDMI. I'm going to try my 360 at 720P and see if the black screen still occurs. Maybe it's related to an interlaced signal? I'll be moving over to HDMI from the 360 for 1080P, but I still hope this issue is something that can be corrected with a FW update.

we are building a wall cabinet and the mount for the tv will be intalled in the wall after the cabinet's installed.

all the speaker wire has been run, but the install is at a standstill at the moment for a number of reasons having little to do with the tv.

ordered tv from amazon with no clue as to when it wold be delivered until 3 dayz ago (now they are actually shipping from VAnns for 100 bucks less).

i'm no techie, so i had a tech friend scheduled to be here with me to receive the tv and check it out.

last night the friend called and cannot make it.

i'm here alone. i am not very strong ( i weigh about 115).

i have a tv temporarily hooked up to cable on a stand in my living room.

should i ask the delivery people to hook up the new tv where the temporary one now is and make sure it works?

I am no going to be running dnice's pictures, as i dont have them saved and don't feel comfortable doing it.

the tv will not be formally hooked up for another month, but the tech friend can make it over in the next week to get things going on a stand.

BUT FOR NOW, what do you guys recommend i do?
do i ask it be hooked up to the cable?

wow.
i am significantly nervous.
thanks to all who are going to attempt to help.

Opened up the van.....and my new plasma was lying on it's side. We unboxed it, tested it out , everything looked fine.

Just started running D-Nice's break in at 9:00PM EST myself. Took all the plastic off the unit and left the plasma in the box. Working on gutting my living room at the moment to get my new wall mount in.

Once it is delivered, just leave the unit in the box. Take off the plastic, plug in the power cord (surely hook up up the cable wire if it can reach). Cycle through all the inputs to make sure it works.

Your goal on delivery is to power it up just to see if it functions.

After that, you can do like me and copy those pictures to an SD Card, change the settings on the set per DNices instructions while the unit is still sitting in the box. Just let it run for 100 hrs. I am not ready to hang my set either. By the time I am ready, the set will be broken in and I won't be missing a beat!
thanks!
really!
stupid questions:
if it is in the box, how do i know if it is functioning?
i get that i can see if it powers on--i'm not that bad.
but how do i get all the plastic off and cycle through all the inputs (ahhhhhhh!!!!!!???) with the big boy in the box?
do i unplug the cable that i now have in my living room working and plug it into the boxed tv?
wow.
do i feel like an idiot.
and btw.
you're a saint.

Just use the remote to cycle thru the functions. In order to cycle thru all the inputs you would have to have all the sources ready to plug in to all the input jacks. Most folks just have a dvd player near it (that can be moved) and plug it via hdmi. What you really want to check is that it is not cracked (readily apparent -looks like a cracked mirror would-look closely) and also look to see that all the pixels work. I don't think you need a source for that personally, just have the tv on and you can tell.
The box should lift right off the top of the unit while it remains cradled by its packaging.

If all is well so far, write on the receipt that the tv will not be put into service for a month and let the seller know too.

I tried that, but it didn't make a difference. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

As Cleveland Plasma said, maybe I just need to switch to the Dish!

i was scared to death, and your comments, empathy, and time have made a huge impact on my day.

i owe you all big time.

i thought i had covered my bases when I learned the unit was being delivered before it was going to be installed.

now i can breathe again.

thanks so much.

I called Sears, and they're getting back to me in the next couple of days about picking it up and brinigng a replacement. Pretty painless so far. I'm hoping I just got a bad one, because I LOVE the picture, but that Buzz is intolerable.
will let Amazon know that the unit will not be put in service for a month.
however, should i want to run DNICE's pic later, will that be a prob?
thanks

Not only is Vanns selling it for $100 less, but they're also throwing in a free Wii system.

Curious theory. I think every report of this so far has been from a 1080i component source, myself included. Maybe I'll try running my cable box at 720p for a while and see.
HDMI at 1080i seems fine, watched a copuple of movies and it hasn't blacked out there.. although we got some weirdness when the screensaver on the DVD player kicked in.. when I went to restart the movie it left a very prominent image of the screensaver logo on the picture. Couldnt shift it except by changing to another input then back again.. most odd.. Never happened with previous TV (same player, also using HDMI)

I wonder what proportion of us have Buzzers too.. I'm waiting for Sears to call me to arrange a replacement. Weird thing is my first Philips 9630 Buzzed like crazy, the second was almost whisper quiet.. I hope the same happens with this TV..
I switched the output of my 360 to 720P and played some Splinter Cell Conviction. Guess what? I had no instances of that blank/black screen occur during at least an hour of gaming. Maybe I got lucky or it is the interlaced signal. I'm going to leave the 360 at 720P and continuing to watch for that black screen.

It would be great if a few others experiencing this could try setting their console or cable box to 720P over component and see if the issue goes away. If so, then we got something.
I love the picture over all. But when we played Blue Ray version of "Ingloryious Bastards" it didn't fill the whole screen I had bars on top and bottom. Tried different format options from format button but it didn't look as good a "Full". Why does the screen get filled with some HD shows and some movies fill the screen?
Also when I put a disc in the Blue Ray the tv turns on. How can I stop that..it screws up my Harmony One.

We adopted the 16:9 width to height ratio for HD TV here in the US, I guess because that is what Japan settled on. So, most broadcast HD shows conform to the 16:9 format. However, it can be high-def and still use the 4:3 ratio. (Some of the local news in my area does this).

However, many movies are filmed at an even wider format than the 16:9 TV standard. In those cases, the DVD or Blu-ray creator can transfer the film "as is" in which case, you will wind up with black bars at the top and bottom. Or, they can choose to chop off part of the sides of the original film image to make it completely fill the 16:9 frame. I think that these will usually be labeled "Anamorphic Widescreen" or something like that - indicating that the original movie has been made to fit the 16:9 format.
