The Official Panasonic G20/25 Owner's Discussion Thread [no price talk] - Page 97

Made the leap and picked up a G25 today. Once I got it home I noticed the shipping label from Panasonic to the store...2/25/10. Damn!

So now I'm wondering what to do. Search the area for a post April build date? I got a great deal (< $850) so am wondering if avoiding the rising blacks is worth paying more. Or if I would even notice it. Damn avsforum for making me worry about this stuff

This is the 2nd Plasma from Amazon with no problems!

Thx Abbmia and gce for the replies. I see Pilot is shipping mine also, but have no idea who the local delivery company is, so I hope it goes as smooth as your experiences. I was worried about getting it out of the box, on the stand and on before the guy left.

Also, someone else responded about gaming, so thank you also for putting my mind at ease. There will be lots of Red Dead and MW2 and other shooters played on my new plasma, maybe even my Mac for movies and stuff. Like I said burn in doesn't concern me, as I will keep the settings in the suggested range from you guys and D Nice.

I can't wait! I miss the World Cup on the new TV, but at least it will be primed and ready to roll for my Crimson Tide this fall!

Pilot has local offices. Find the one closest to you and send them an email with all your tracking info. I did this and everything worked out great. Driver helped me take the upper box off and waited until I checked out the screen and plugged her in.

May 2010 here too.
Go online with the link Amazon gives you and when it shows "recovered at destination" call them and ask to track. When she says she has a time in 2 or 3 days, ask nicely for tomorrow and she will most likely help you out. Great firm.

God I can't wait till I get my set. 50 is so small though!
50 inch small huh. Ok here is what you do. Stick a 32 or 37 inch in the spot where the 50 will go. Now when you get the 50 it will look like a 65.

Yup it works.

Home Theater Mag review of the G20. Make sure you read it all the way through as the review is much better than it seems from reading just the headlines.

thanks for the review link. But I'm still trying to figure out if he was reviewing the g20 or the movies he watched on it. I have never read a review like that in my life.

LOL I read it & thought the same thing. What a dufus... He needs to stick to the technical stuff & leave the film school comments to those who are qualified.

I'd say he generally liked the tv but hated the movies he watched on it.

So you bought a 50 even though you think it's too small? I watch my 50 from about 7-8" & it's pretty nice at that distance. I would have liked bigger but I didn't have much more room in my current setup in my basement either. All in all I don't regret the getting the 50".

2/25/10 is OK. If it was 2/15/10, I would return it.

My g20 is built may 2010 so what's the difference on built dates?

Thanks for the link.

I thought it was a fair review - goes into features much more than other reviews I've seen (some never even mention the Blu Ray options). Interestingly, the MLL they measured, even after 800 hours, is very similar to what others have reported as initial values. It will be interesting if they report on 1000+ hours.

The review noted Netflix is an "available app". Hmmm

Still loving the set. Played some BFBC2 and went 25-9 and had a game where I was over a 3.00 KDR. My KDR's up across the board, and I get a lot more shots across the map, and I just know they say "WTF how did he see me?!?!?!". Once I get some gaming headphones I'll be unstoppable. Only complaint right now is the buzzing and me thinking that maybe I should go for the 54".

bigger is ALWAYS better. I think I might pass on a 50 and just get a VT25 58

I've had my G20 for 1 week now and am starting to notice that the picture is grainy sometimes when the scene is dark. It happens on Blu-Ray movies and TV (Cox HD cable). Is this normal, or do I have a defective TV or HDMI cables?
Nice options to have Juke, it's win-win.

that's likely the source. You'll see more grain on a dark scene because the camera must use a higher sensitivity film or ISO resulting in increased grain or noise

Actually I just re-read it. I stopped at the Conclusion thinking it was done the first time but the best part was after that. The Black Level part was a good read. I wonder if they are using the sets tweaked after May 2010 with a softer voltage adjustment but at least the good black level at 800 hours is encouraging.

Hard to say. In the addendum, the author states they ran the set for 24hrs/day for 4 weeks before making the last MLL measurement @800 hours. Before the 4-week run, they had it for an unspecified amount of time. That means they had their set in mid-to-late May at the latest.

So its possible the test set had a May mfg date if Panasonic expressed it out of the factory. But it could easily be April as well.

Home Theater is a fairly popular site with a print edition, so if Panasonic had a significantly revised "rising blacks" algorithm in production, they would be a good set of hands to place a demo into.
