The Official Panasonic TC-PXXS2 Owner's Discussion Thread [NO Price talk] - Page 21

Hi,

I'm back again, I re-read Chad's post about his S2 calibration. I think he may have answered my questions in enough depth to suffice. I'd still enjoy reading any replies, but I may have just not read close enough my first time through.

thanks in advance

I am torn betweeen these 2 I've read much and seen mirrorlike reflections on PK550, I saw in the store and wow, very bad reflections but many other sets had similar reflections. The S2 I found to have duller reflections (which I liked), but it seemed in Cinema mode (without tweak or calibration at BB), it seemed the black levels did not come close to the LG.

We'll be sitting straigh on approx 14.5 feet away from screen so the screen size in the 65S2 might trump the 60PK550 anyway.

Here is my question, have any of you (I think elwaylite did, not sure), go from living with a LG PK550 and not being able to stand the reflection AND then got a S2. How was the change in PQ? Were you able to adjust the color and black level to a nice plasmalike PQ? (I hope I'm not being too subjective, I'm new to this).

I know the Chad review had a lot to do with the LG mania, I respect Chad and his reviews. I do not consider myself a videophile that will tweak and tweak. I'm, really just looking for some confidence that the S2 can and will put up some pretty good if not GREAT PQ. I know it wont compare to V panny v series.

I know a professional calibration will help.

Thanks for reading, if questions are too subjective, just pass with reply, I'll understand.

Well, I had the 60PK750 for a while and then changed to the 58S2. I like the S2 much better. The only thing I liked better about the LG was that the colors were better out of the box, but an ISF calibration brought the S2's colors to where they should be. The LG was definitely more reflective and the blacks were not nearly as good as the S2. These are my subjective thoughts, of course, but I hope they help.

Is having this 65" panny around 8-10 feet too close? Because if it is im going to have to move the whole basement around haha i havent personally bought it yet but im leaning towards buying it

Edit: i currently have a 55"

My .02 .....
I tried two pk550s before getting an s2. I think the pk550s are nice sets, with great features, but both of mine buzzed like crazy. They are more attractive sets, panasonic can take a lesson on aesthetics, but maybe the thinness led to the buzzing. I also really appreciate that LG throws in 72hz playback for 24p content in their lower end sets.

But, in the end, I preferred the image on the s2 slightly more, and the panasonic didn't buzz loudly!

Some folks would say no (that includes me ... my distance is 10 feet) and some would say yes. The folks at THX and SMPTE would mostly say no at 10 feet ... and almost a unanimous "approval" at 8 feet. It's all a matter of personal taste and comfort ... but I have found their guidelines very helpful.

Carlton Bale has a really neat spreadsheet that will help you decide. Here's the link:

haha i completely understand my 55" TV is already too small for me :P

By the way guys i am realy leaning towards getting this TV maybe tomorrow (the 65") but today i went to BJS and saw the Samsung pn58c6400 for the same exact price as the 65" panny.
my question is how much do they differ aside from the inches? should i stick with the panny or go to the sammy pn58c6400?

I also have a couple of questions for you guys about the panny tc-p65s2.
if i get the panny where are the sd card slides you guys talk about?, where can i get them? and is it really worth running the tv with that card for 100 hours aka 4 days before even putting a cable hdmi to watch tv with it? which is the best bluray (to play with my ps3 i dont own a bluray dvd player i hope this is ok) to calibrate this type of huge tv? and is it really worth getting it calibrated by the geek squad in BB?

thanks guys!

I was skeptical but ran them anyway and then did the D-Nice adjustments. Glad I did ... the PQ is very very good.

I have never owned a Blu-ray player until now ... got it free with the Panny ... so I'm probably not the best source for useful info ... but I like mine ... it works great and produces an outstanding picture. Keep in mind, I am not a super critical videophile.

I don't know. I'm so happy with the way mine looks right now, I just don't see a need for me to have mine calibrated. Although I do have the Spears & Munsil Blu-ray calibration disc ... and will play around with it eventually to see if I can tweak it any better.
The Spears and Munsil disc is great for getting your tv better than out of the box, and it'll play fine in the PS3.

Id not use the Geek Squad, and if you are serious, hire one of the respected guys on here, like the fellas from LionAv, ChadB or Dnice.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Ive heard the geeksquad is a ripoff but reading this whole thread ive read that dve and thespears bluray calibrates it very nice after running the alides for 100hrs.
And what do u mean hire a guy from here? They legit come to my house? I live in MA haha

But i am still wondering about the samsung plasma i saw, the pn58c6400, how much of a differce is that plasma with this one aside from the size? And would you recommend this panny over that sammy? And how difficult is to calibrate the tv with the spears and dve bluray? Is it worth spending money for both of them?
Thanks for the help guys! Sry im a noob

Id take the size, 58 to 65 is a good bit of real estate.

I completely agree that is one main reason why i am leaning towards the panny but performance wise do pannys do better than dammys in the plasma world? Ive heard that pannys are the leading plasma carriers like samsung on lcd led is this true?

This years Samsungs are pretty good, but I prefer Panasonic.

Hey,

Does anyone know why the S2s are plummeting in price?!

Just saw the 58" S2 at Best Buy for the lowest price I have seen it anywhere and the 65" wasn't far behind...
It's only $200 bucks less than I paid weeks ago, and Amazon has been low like that before now, even lower.

My guess is that the S3s are only 5-6 months away and the prices are falling to match demand.

Great - so after months of indecision now there is talk of an S3 right around the corner!?

Anywya, so I have purchased the S2 and am wondering if a video processor is required/will yield a significant benefit?

90%+ of our TV viewing is Dish Network high def signals - and they seem to compress the hell out of them. We have the new 922 receiver.

With the larger screen, I assume we will start watching more regular DVDs as from our collection in addition to Bluerays.

Would a video processor be a worthwhile investment for me?

Thanks.

Panasonic releases new TV models each year. While an S3 hasn't been officially announced to my knowledge, I can safely assume it will be released about the same time of year that the S2 was (and S1 in 2009).

I don't think you'll see much benefit (unless you're very picky about image quality of non 1080p sources) from a video processor. And yes, satellite carriers compress the channels too much. They'd rather have 500 channels than 100 good-looking ones.

I have the Duo, and it will be a worthy addition if you hire a professional calibrator. It wont fix the Dish overcompression (**** in = **** out), but it's gamma/grayscale/cms adjustments allow you to overcome the S2's lower gamma, and dial in spot on colors.

Hi everyone. So my new P54S2 was just delivered to my home about 2 hours ago. I turned it on to let my little girl watch Finding Nemo for a bit but I'd like to really get it set up and possibly "broken in." This is where my question comes from:

I know many people are using D-Nice's settings once they've followed the 100-hour Slides break-in process. Would that 100-hour Slide process be a good idea even if I don't want to use D-Nice's settings? In other words, should I run that slide test for a certain number of hours (less than 100?) or is it pointless if I don't plan on using D-Nice's settings?

Also, I noticed on D-Nice's break-in thread he said that his process was not intended for IR/burn-in prevention. If this is the case, what can/should I do to better set up my new TV for IR/burn-in prevention?

Any help on those two questions would be much appreciated. By the way, ElwayLite, you have been a tremendous help so far even though I've never asked you a question directly. I've been reading the replies to a lot of the questions asked here and it's been great.

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the props, I try.

I run the slides for two real reasons:

1) Quickly break the set in;get past the "treat it nicely" period
2) evenly age the screen

I am not using D-Nice's service menu settings, and I came up with my user menu settings with the Spears and Munsil Blu-ray.

If you wanna watch tv for the first 100, just use Cinema mode, crank the contrast down around 60 or so, and try and keep it full screen, and avoid pausing. Run the slides while you sleep and are at work, and you'll be done in a week.

Ok sweet! That sounds great. The 100 hour thing was going to be hard for me since my wife and kids can hardly wait (me too!) to start enjoying the set. I'll run the slides beginning tonight while we all sleep and turn the contrast down to 60 while using the set, like you've suggested.

Are there any prevention measures to help the IR/burn-in issue (not really even an issue anyone, is it?)?

ElwayLite, thanks again!

Just avoid pausing and tickers/gaming while it's gettin broken in. Once it gets a few hundred hours on it, I just watch and not worry. If im gonna have to pause the tv for awhile, sao a 30 min phone call, I just cut it off. Thats even overkill, but I do it anyways.

Hey guys so i bought the TC-P65S2 tv yesterday and i started the slides and i dont see any black lines or floating blacks (yes!!!!) my question is before i hook it up to my cable box once the burn in is done. I have hdmi cables and one digital optical one. But theyre like a little over a year old. Thr hdmi cables are dynex, the one that came with the xbox360 elite and a comcast one. Thedigital audio is dynex too. Is it time for new ones? Does image quality fade because of the age on hdmi cables? I was looking at that mono website cant fully remember it but they have good prices. Should i go there for hdni and digtal oltical cables if i need them?
And one last thing, sorry, should i buy a power supply for my plasma?
Thanks!

Cables shouldn't degrade over time. Your existing cables are fine.

Do you mean a surge protector? I like using them, but they aren't going to do anything against a really big surge, like a lightning strike. They're more a convenience for me so I can plug everything into one place and turn it off when I go on vacation.
Also help if you get one that'll trip out with a small spike/flicker/browning.
