Well my cable box is an hd dvr by comcast and its connected thru hdmi. The PQ is exactly like a projection screen we have in my house, no lie. Blu-rays look good thru the ps3 for example i watched clash of the titans in bluray last night in game mode and it looked great but on the dark parts of the picture in the movie it was very noticeable many pixels moving like if it was really grainy. Today i watched surrogates in bluray with the same settings and it looked like a dvd movie non hd...
When i put cinema mode with dnices setting in my cable box its like adding a huge dark cloud ontop of a great picture.
I want to see the bright plasma that i see everywhere. Like i said on my lost post before this my moms $400 insignia looks better than my$ 2000 panny

Dont use Dnice's SM settings for one thing, many times one tv's SM settings do no carry over well to another model. If the Insignia looks better something is definitely wrong. Ive had some nice tv's in the last few years, and this one looks the best so far.

You need to put it back to factory, get the spears and munsil blu-ray, and calibrate brightness, color, tint and sharpness that way. Also make sure you cable box is outputting the right resolution. Many factors in your setup, which is why PQ complaints have to be taken with a grain of salt. Some channels don't look as good as others, but when I watch USA HD and Syfy HD, for example, shows are very sharp on my tv.

I do have spears and munsil and i have tried calibrating it but whennit gets to contrast i cant seem to "pass" that cali ration part since i cant see any of the bars that are suposed to be seen.
I have the lastest comcast dvr box and last tine i checked its connected through hdmi and outputting in 1080i, what bothers me is that the cinema setting is not bright enough for me. I see the picture too dark. I can see the pq is pretty good behind the big "cloud" in cinema mode and i just want to make it brighter sorta like how led or lcd tvs show in a way. I like more brightness for example ps3 in game mode looks sick and far superior over cable dvr cinema mode.
Any ideas what i could do?

Sounds like the PS3 is clipping white. There are settings it needs to be on, may ask in a PS3 thread. For normal TV viewing, a 75 contrast would be fine, but you need to fix the PS3 clipping, because it will effect your movie experience.

So when you hit the info button on the tv remote, the tv confirms 1080i input? What is your brightness setting, and do you have black level to "light" on the tv?

yes its it says 1080i, my settings are
cinema
contrast - 75
brightness - 61
color - 46
tint - +11
sharpness - 0
color temp - used to be warm but cool looks better in my opinion
x.v.color, cats, video nr off
blur reduction - on
adv pic
mpeg nr - off
black level - light (but dark looks better for some reason)
3:2 pulldown - on

i dont know why but the ps3 in game mode looks absolutely amazing, like its bright the colors are awesome etc but when viewing blurays its just blahh.. only one movie looked good (clash of the titans) but the surrogates movie didnt look as good with game mode...

its amazing seeing the colors from ps3 to the cable box colors from game mode on ps3 and cinemamode on my cable box

i dont know why but cinemamode is way too dark for me... like i noticed this in the showroon in BB that LED and LCDs are much brighter and they looked like a plasma but this tv just looks like a projection tv on cinema mode. =(

I took pictures of my tvs with the same image.
this is my projector tv Kdf-55wf655
http://img405.imageshack.us/i/img0094jn.jpg/ (i know its a little brighter than my plasma but thats not really the point since i took it with a light on and i was too lazy to change it back and take another pic haha)

this is my plasma

I see a very small difference, in my opinion after paying 2000 dollars for a "plasma" tv the difference should be huge, im not seeing that wow impressive factor from the plasma, i dont know why
post #758 of 2258
I think SW is supposed to be on, and that may be why you are clipping whites on PS3.
i left superwhite off and took these pictures

this is with game mode on, in my opinion it looks AMAZING, but im not seeing this from my cable box the difference is HUGE in my opinion

When I flip back and forth, using a browser tab, between 95 and 96 (tiger woods), the Plasma looks a good bit better to me.

right i completely agree but its not tha tbig of a difference, my projector tv has never been calibratedand ive had it for 6years?
there should be a huge difference.
i was expecting a lot of things from a plasma especially PQ and the colors, for example take a look at the ps3 image i took. thats how i want the TV to look with the cable box, the colors in that image look amazing in my opinion
but i am not getting them in the tv.
another thing i dont know why but sometimes when i take a pic of the cinema mode with my iphone 4 the picture i take ends up looking much better than what it already is for some reason
not to mention that when im watching sportscenter the lower announcements when they move from right to left sometimes i see them skip and like they have an overlay or outline that makes it really hard to read

here is the difference between modes on my ps3, take note that my phone makes it look a litle more brighter than wwhat it really is. (i took these in a completely dark room.

http://img835.imageshack.us/i/img0101d.jpg/ (cinema mode)
http://img823.imageshack.us/i/img0100ie.jpg/ (Game mode)

http://img714.imageshack.us/i/img0102ch.jpg/ (Cinema mode)
http://img521.imageshack.us/i/img0103j.jpg/ (Game mode)

this one you can really notice it, this is pretty much how i get my cable box colors contrast etc, im glad it came out like this because this is how i really see my cable box HD channels

http://img839.imageshack.us/i/img0105ek.jpg/ (cinnema mode)
http://img707.imageshack.us/i/img0104ru.jpg/ (game mode, in my opnion far more superior)

thoughts?

again, thanks for your help and taking your time for me

Game mode has a little more black crush, is more vivid, and the colors are oversaturated. Many like it this way, and there is nothing wrong with it, but to me, Cinema mode looks better.

It's just a matter of preference. Some folks get a tv calibrated and dont like the look either. I, on the other hand, can stand a vivid tv, or the look of Game Mode. If you prefer game mode, id say run it in that.

yea thats what ive done sometimes but when i put game mode on my cable input and i watch football the grass looks incredibly fake the colors are everywhere its just not good for regular cables, i dont uderstand why

To me, I think your game mode screens look a bit oversaturated. The last one with Lesnar in it looks really oversaturated, but that's just me. I don't know how much of that applies to your camera though.

its the camera, when i take a picture with my camera and the tv its really weird but sometimes i get the exact picture of what i see and sometimes i get better then what i see, but that cinema pic of lesnar is exactly what i see and the game mode in lesnar is too bright, i see it a little darker but there is a huge color difference, the PQ is amazing on the ps3. im just confused on why i cant get that PQ out of ESPN, or whatever

Your PS3 is feeding uncompressed 1080p, correct? I bet your cable company is feeding your TV compressed 720p/1080i.

yes and how do i know that? should i call? what can i do to do change that to uncompressed 1080p
post #769 of 2258
Nothing. One thing about larger screens, is they'll make a provider go from lovely on a 40", to fugly on a 65". Compression shows as you increase screen size. For instance, Directv looked better than Dish on my 55", but on my 32", they both looked great.
thats depressing, i was looking forward to getting great cable picture... so much for much better looking plasma than my old projector before football season =\\
so there is absolutely no way to take that cloudy view out of cinema?
should i have gone with a brighter lcd or led?
maybe you are just one of those people who love the LCD/LED brightness and oversaturated colors, it could be what your looking for. I on the other hand bought an LED after having a plasma and couldn't stand it for one day so I immediatly boxed it up and returned it for the S2 and have loved this set since I turned it on.
PS3 should be set to RGB limited and superwhite on. I recently calibrated a 65S2 and wound up with contrast at 78 and brightness at 63 in Cinema mode. Not saying to plug those number in but after redoing S& M calibration you shouuld be close to that.

Edit: Ooops..I just looked further back in the thread and I see you are already close to those numbers already.

I have been playing with superwhite off, i have turned it on but i am a little confused on what exactly it does

i do like brightness over than darkness on a screen, but since i went to 65" i was recommended by everyone to go to a plasma, the cinema setting seems to be nice when playiung God of War III but these settings would be amazing if theyre a little brither like vivid, any idea how i could reduce the cloudyness on cinema mode and keep the colors but just make it a little more vivid?

I'm not sure what you mean by cloudy because mine is very clear in cinema mode on all input sources PS3, HDDVD & Directv hd the only channels that may seem a bit cloudy or should I say fuzzy are the non hd channels but even some of them look amazingly clear. I have both my brightness and contrast below the 70 mark and it seems pretty bright to me and the colors have good pop to them nothing seems bland or dull at all.
like it does look somewhat clear but think of a bright clear picture then add a cloud on it, it looks smoky. even with the lights off in my basement. like the brock lesnar picture i showed earlier
http://img839.imageshack.us/i/img0105ek.jpg/
it looks somewhat clear but its like something is preventing it from showing its true quality.
i hope you know what i mean it looks somewhat dull,

sorry for being such an annoying person but i really want some good settings and picture quality from a tv i was expecting so much from. and i dont want to return it yet

You're not being annoying, we're all here to help each other

Try backing off the contrast to 69 and see if it helps although you may have already tried it.

yeah ive tried everything with the contrast =\\
since i am using cool instead of warm, the offsets i applied for warm were for nothing no? do you guys think i should apply the same offsets given by dnice on the normal setting? would this help anything?

also if you look at the images i took earlier from a white background of the nhl demo
http://img823.imageshack.us/i/img0100ie.jpg/ (game)
http://img835.imageshack.us/i/img0101d.jpg/ (cinema)

i know the game makes the colors look weird but the color white in the game setting is much richer and better than cinema, i dont know if you can see but if you compare both of them you will notice what im talking about like if a cloud was on top of it
is there any way to make the whites better in cinema mode to look just like the game mode from the picture above?
damn. that last picture does not look bad at all.

maybe you set your expectations way too high?

I havent really read about anybody being so let down by the PQ on the S2
