The Official AVS TiVo "Series4" Premiere topic - Page 23

Thats true biscuit but you can't make a blanket statement like that when there are valid experts around.
Also I also mentioned my own personal experience when I mentioned that I downloaded videos and reported that some of them were 1080p.

I must have misremembered in regards to the reason why the 2nd core wasn't enabled, thanks for correcting that.

Cool that you have your tivo fixed to 1080i, I do too for the same reason, though mine is a Premiere.

This is an issue as to how thw Tivo device presents (or encodes/decodes, however you want to call it) the HDMI audio channel - and the result is that it's either being refused by the TV, or not sent to to the TV in the first place. Either way, the result is the same.

it's been observed that when you're accessing web-based SD content, the chances of the no-audio behavior are higher.

It's been observed that "sometimes" in the above scenareo- the audio is fine. But more often than not, it's silent.

I note that when using the Tivo (HDMI) for ALL other purposes-- OTA broadcast reception, recorded show playback, etc-- I have absolutely no issue.

Thie above issue however, is enough of an HDMI deal-killer to make me rip out the HDMI and go with component cables. For a box that cost $300 and a lifetime subscription ($400) - I really expected better.

I have six Premieres. All connected with HDMI. I have never seen this issue. HDMI has been rock solid on them in different setups and TVs.(as well as the nine S3 units I used to own)
There has always been audio present when I watch a Netflix title or a video from youtube.

Five of the Premieres are set to output all resolutions, one is only set for 1080i and 720P since that is the one I will take to my girlfriends to connect to her 1366x768P LCD set.

My HD and Premiere are HDMI connected and have not shown any audio problems. Both are set to allow all input formats to pass through to allow my DVDO iScan Duo do its thing to clean up deficient source material.

Tivo's > HDMI > Duo > HDMI > LG 55HL90 TV
Duo HDMI audio only > HDMI > Sony 820 AVR

Neither the audio to the TV or the AVR suffer from dropouts.

What features require the subscription service? Trying to see if just the box alone will have any value to me. What can I do with a Premier box, cable card, OTA and internet connection?
Blacklac-- you need the subscription for the tivo to be of any use at all. The tivo's main functionality is all based on the data it gets for programming (aka, "The guide"). You MIGHT be able to get netflix or such without the subscription, but I can't say for sure. But tivo's functionality is all based on the programming data it receives-- which is what the subscription is for. You're paying tivo for highly accurate and complete programming data.

If you want OTA recording WITHOUT fees, you can go the route of a ChannelMaster DTV DVR-- which is tivo-like, but gets its guide data from the tvguide data that's embedded on most CBS stations.

For years I've used a DVR like that-- but recently went the tivo route for things like the ability to schedule programming of my favorite show, "new" episodes only, and regardless of what time or day it got moved to. You can't do stuff like THAT with a simple DVR.

Windows Media Center is also an alternative.......

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info.

You need a TiVo subscription and a Netflix subscription to watch netflix content. Without a TiVo subscription you can't do very much and would defeat the purpose of even buying a Tivo.

You could tune (but not record) OTA without a subscription, and pause and rewind Live TV. However, you wouldn't get guide data -- not even PSIP, because the TiVo ignores PSIP in favor of Tribune-supplied data, which you don't get without a subscription, so instead you get nothing.

Tribune 14 Day Guide Data, TiVo Season Passes, TiVo Search and TiVo Wishlists are four good reasons for a subscription. Not to mention the TiVo is best in class when it comes to an OTA/CABLE PVR and access to Internet content. Back up recorded content to a PC/MAC, convert it to a portable player, burn a DVD/BR, etc.

You have to balance the cost of this no-name cheap ?TiVo? against the mega-quality stuff you get from your cable provider, that you have grown to love ;-)

A Tivo without a sub will work fine as a Cablecard STB, including trick play for live TV. You just won't get any guide data for the channels.

Interestingly enough, a couple of users in the $99 Tivo HD thread (Blockbuster clearance) over at Fatwallet discovered that if you disconnect it from the network, manual recording is reenabled after 30 days even without a sub. Makes it a DVR version of a VCR, in other words - can set repeated or one-time recordings for a given channel/time.

I have been trying for several days now to use the new online season pass manager. When I click on the link for the season pass manager, I get a screen that says I have to first upgrade my privacy level by checking a box and then hitting the continue button. I then get a message that it will take up to 24 hours for the update to occur. I have done this several times over a period of the past 3 or 4 days and I still get the message about the need to update my privacy level.
Has anyone been successful with this process? Thanks
post #673 of 2514
yes, I got the mail in maybe 10 minutes and was able to login to the season pass manager. I was able to copy passes from my old HD to my new Premiere (even for shows that are not currently scheduled like Psych).
Thanks, must be something wrong with my account. I will give them a call.

I have the same issue trying to activate my season pass manager online. 5 days later-- I still get prompted to accept the security settings, etc. I'll have to call them too.
I did not end up calling. It occured to me to try my wife's laptop instead of my desktop. When I did that it went through quickly. Something about my desktop computer and the settings I guess. If you have access to another computer you could give that a try first.

A couple of questions:
1. Should I be able to see my Tivo Premier (with a wireless adapter) on my network?
2. I seem to recall seeing somewhere that its possible to remotely schedule recordings, etc. I would rather like to do it from my PC across my network. Any chance?
Thanks.

You don't even need to be on the network... you can schedule recordings to your TiVo from any device that connects to the web via www.tivo.com and click on "Find TV shows".
no, it does not show up as a drive on your network. You can login to it via its IP address through a browser, but all you can do is see the recordings and download them to your computer.

Or even better (because the mobile version is way faster)... http://m.tivo.com

Go figure, last night I could finally get in.

I am getting a bit upset that we are not seeing all of the menus converted to HD. So I sent an email to customer support and their response is below. This was a surprise to me. Anyone else know this was the plan?

Thank you for contacting TiVo Customer Support. I do apologize for the extended period of time it has taken to respond to your email. I would be happy to answer your question regarding all menus being converted to HD.

At this time, there are no plans to change all menus to the new HD interface format.

I sometimes have an issue where I lose sound when deleting a title after I'm done playing it. The current channel comes on in the upper corner with the My Shows listing, but no sound. I have to hit the Live button to get the sound back ( and or change the channel). Has anyone seen this problem too? I'm connected hdmi to a NAD T785 receiver.
Actually, I saw this for the first time yesterday. I changed channels and that cleared it up.

what's the best way to report these bugs to tivo?

Report them via tivo's web site ("contact support"), where they will get back to you reasonably quick, and tell you there's no problem.

I hope this tech rep was mis-speaking. This is really disappointing if true. It's one thing to deploy a product in the market that's only half ready. But, to LEAVE it that way?

To me this sounds like a desirable feature. I'm annoyed by the yammering of my HR24's little TV window while I want to concentrate on selecting a show to watch (or record).

Maybe there should be three choices:
1. Annoying tiny window.
2. Quiet tiny window.
3. No tiny window.

Could this be someone confused with "all menus" being TiVo's entire product line?

I really can't image the Premiere menus being left this way. Don't know if I'm being optimistic or not, but I'm going to chalk that response up to either someone not understanding the question, or can't give any official response so they gave a "safe answer".
