Quick question on 7.1 Audio

I currently have 5.1 audio setup, and am migrating to 7.1 My question is what happens on non 7.1 movies / TV shows? Will my Denon 1909 sort of make it's own 7.1? Or, will it not even send audio to the 2 extra speakers?

If it doesn't send audio to the two extra speakers, then for the attached picture (don't laugh, it's bad), which set of speakers would be considered the rear's on a 5.1? 1 and 2 or 3 and 4? Normally it wouldn't matter, but I have a set of speakers that are better than the other set, so I want the better speakers where they will get more use.

Completely up to you. You can listen to 5.1 material using 5.1 speakers (the speakers behind you will go silent) or you can use surround processing (Dolby Pro Logic IIx) to extract rear info (sounds that would have normally phantom imaged behind you will be sent to the speakers behind you).

With two different pairs of surrounds, find the ones that more closely match your main L/R speakers, and use those at your sides. The side speakers are the ones that have to blend with the front speakers and expand the soundstage into the room.

My fronts are polk 60's, and one set of rears are 30's, where my other set are bi/di polar speakers. (I can turn them to bi polar or di polar).

Well then I believe that might change what sanjay said depending which speaker is better your bi/dipoles or the 30s. He didn't know that you had a pair of bi/dipoles. The bi/dipoles should be used as side surrounds. If you like the monitor 30s though I would recommend getting another set of them and use 4 monitor 30s for all your surround speakers.

What bi/dipole speakers do you have?

Those are my bi/di polar speakers.

Toss in the loop that I have a corner setup, and my speakers need to be higher than optimal height and angled downward (due to windows and stuff).

i have the 1910 denon. on 5.1 movies it still simulated sound for those 2 extra speakers so your all good. listen to a concert or a war movie and you will hear a big difference.

It sure does. I'll echo your suggestion. For the moment, I would use the bi/dipoles as the side speakers and the Monitor 30s as rear speakers. Eventually, it would help to pick up another pair of 30s, for some consistency in the surround field.

BTW, if the side speakers end up being distractingly close any of the listeners, you'll want to use them in dipole mode (less direct sound, more reflected energy).

Excellent...that is where I have the bi pole speakers now, on the sides, and plan on putting the 30's on teh rear.

I got the bi/di polar because of my setup opposed to two more 30's...I have to have them up high in the air and pointed down on a corner setup...i was hoping that this would give a richer sound from the speaker, opposed to the direction aspect of the 30's.
