This one did not get the "Sapphire" treatment
The transfer overall is very good. Some parts like low light scenes is often hard too see because of heavy grain. But daylight scenes is where the extra details compared to DVD is more obvious. I dont see anything here that exhibit overtly digital tamperings. I wish they could've have gone back to remove more of the dirt, scratches and damage for this release.
The broadcast HDTV version was captured from Voom 2006 when they were still at 1920 x 1080 17+ mbps. Ahh good times. Personally the movie is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too cheesy for me.

Well the BD looks best by some margin. I remember when I saw this theatrically that it was one of the grainiest films I'd seen and it is. The tuft on the helmet is the telling tale as far as detail being rendered well. I was impressed with how rich the colors were in the film as well.

My biggest screen is 73"
But it is 1080p, and 24p capable.
I really hope to be impressed...this movie is one of my guilty pleasures (the wife especially loves it).

In my experience, even the most average BD transfer will give a noticeable improvement at approx 80 inches and up.

After viewing both DVD and BD, I have to say save your coin and skip this BD.
Although it is better than the DVD, it isn't really worth a purchase (unless you are a BIG BIG fan of the film).
Incredibly inconsistent PQ and anemic SQ is all this release can deliver.
The master for the BD seems to be the same as the one previously used for the DVD.
I suggest waiting for a new master.
Considering this is a WB release, the wait might be long.

In fact I have to double check if I have the right streams when I was processing these files. The broadcast and the blu-ray almost look identical.

When this film was done the effects were all done optically which means more film generations which normally means more grain and loss of resolution. Just to do a soft cut, fade, wipe, etc. requires another generation. There are many other factors that will affect the way any particular film will look.
As to VC-1 and MPEG-2, bit rate efficiency is the main advantage of VC-1 (or AVC) over MPEG-2. I can assure you MPEG-2 can look quite good when used correctly and with sufficient bit rate.

This is an upgrade over the DVD for sure, but most of your average joe six packs out there won't notice much of a difference... unless they've invested money in a pretty large screen, of course. Me? I'm happy I upgraded, but I am a little disappointed that a lot of the grain does come off looking pretty digital. I doubt the film can look any better on the format, but some of the grain, even with the film's excessively grainy nature, comes off looking noisy. Other than that, this is a keeper.

It could probably look a lot better... it's not like every shot in the movie is a grainy optical.
This just doesn't seem to be a new master. Seems to be the same one as the DVD, for that matter. I don't really mind, if remasters cost money there are better Warner titles to spend it on.

As I said in the other Clash of the Titans thread months ago, Warner has been doing a MUCH better job on catalog releases as people in that thread were worried about DNR. I have not been disappointed in a long time with Warner. It's just funny though - now there are people complaining that the movie is too grainy in this thread. lol

Oh, you're not the only one.
It's clearly noticeable if you look at the pictures.
I just didn't think it bore repeating.

Macroblocking and grain and compression so heavy it comes across as noise.

Are these compression issues inherent in the existing master?
