Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I can live with the sides/side being a bit brighter since it is not nearly as bad as my XBR9. The thing that bugs me the most is the lines of uneaven uniformity. This can be seen with light scenes pan (although you do have to look for it) and this is the only thing about this panel that is worse than me XBR9.

I have attached another picture where I pointed out one of the more (the most) noticible horizontal line. Am I being to picky, or is this something that is normal?

Frankly, I haven't run the grey screens on this TV yet...almost scared to do so.

I noticed mine on a black screen and adjusted accordingly. I am super picky and couldn't stand my SXRD KDS60A2000 set for the purple blacks so I embelished the severeness of the blob to got it replaced before it was a problem. At least the blacks are black on this set (with my settings) and uniformity is better than the last although not perfect by any means. If you frequently watch alot of grey media then It's going to drive you nuts.

If you're not happy with the set as it is and can spend the time to repalace it then do so and see if the new one is any better, and if it's not get a Samsung and try your luck there.

Try the vivid settings and check it out during normal (dark) viewings first. Remember that during normal viewing it might not be as noticable as during the grey slides.

Damn, I have the exact same line in the exact same place! I'm trying to find a way to get rid of it.

Where did you buy yours?

I bought mine at BB Magnolia. I did go there and check out the display model and it too displayed some of what I'm talking about. I had them put on the Golf channel and noticed slight horizontal banding when the screen panned left and right over the green, and I noticed slight vertical banding as the ball traveled through the air although it did not have the line that was as noticable on mine.

They did have the LG LE8500 for 1000 less than what it retailed which puts it at the same price as the HX701, but I watched that set enough to easily see the zone banding that everyone is talking about. That issue is absoultely unaceptable and I wouldn't pay more than a 1000 for that TV since that is a MAJOR design flaw, I don't care how good the black levels on that set.

If you check out the link below to some pictures someone posted of the Samsung C750 , you can make out what seems to be very similar banding to the HX701 and I belive they use the same panels , but I may be wrong.

I have absolutley zero clouding or flashlighting on this panel, so I'm hesitant on exchanging it since I might get one with the same banding, but with some clouding or flashlights. Other than this I do really enjoy this TV and its feature set. There just doesn't seem to be anyting else comparable that wouldn't have a similar issue, so If I can't live with it I'll do without in my theater room for awhile.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking... I'm really trying to learn to live with the horizontal line, but it's hard and every time I see it, I feel like my heart skips a beat and I get kinda stressed this will get worse.

I've run my grey and green slides on three different HX701. Mine has this line and pillaring on the right side, one had pillaring on the right side and dark areas all around the edge of the screen and the other one had pillaring, dark areas and like 4-5 horizontal lines.

Since my pillaring is very light and unnoticeable unless I look directly at the right side of the screen, that leaves me with the line, which unfortunately is directly at the height where we look at most of the time.

My GF says she doesn't see it, so I think I'm a big part of the problem. I feel like I've got some kind of obsessive compulsive disorder when I shop for a tv! This pisses me off so much that sometimes I feel like giving up on TV and invest all that money in books!

Apparently the more expensive Sony 2010 models with "Monolithic Design" (HX900 / LX900) have something that Sony calls "OptiContrast Panel", which Sony describes as "Enjoy a spectacular, ultra-clear cinematic picture with an incredibly high contrast, detailed black tones and true sense of depth; the low reflective surface minimises glare and adds an impressive presence even when the TV is off.".

For those of you who have a model with "Monolithic Design" but without "OptiContrast Panel" (e.g. HX700), how annoying do you think the reflections in the flat screen are? Is it more prevalent than in e.g. Samsung HDTV's with the same type of glossy glass panel? Do you see a need for a feature such as the "OptiContrast Panel" that minimises glare?

Yeah, my wife doesn't see it either, but I think she just says she doesn't see it as to not feed my obsession....;-) I had a friend over a few weeks ago and he couldn't see it until I pointed it to him. He thought it was kind of funny, but also thought it was not that big of deal.

For me it's that horizontal line and some vertical lines of different shades when the screen pans left and right that drive me nuts, but I do kind of have to look for that which in itself is a problem. This can be seen most on hockey, or golf as the camere pans. It is not glaring though as it was in the sharp banding days.I wonder if this is because these are 8 bit panels and not 10 bit?

I personally don't have any real issues with this. I have my tv in a theater room/area in my basment with out any uncontrolled light. The only time I notice any glare is when all the lights are on, but that never happens when I'm using the tv.

I guess this really depends on your situation. For me this tv is good for what I'm using it for in a dark controlled light environment. Others might not have the same set-up and have issues with glare.

I think the real differrence for the other models might really be the 10 bit panels vs the 8 bit panels. Perhaps the these will have less banding than I'm experiencing, but that is a guess at this point. I also don't know if it's worth it to pay ~1000 more for a 52 inch vs the 55 inch. If the HX900 uses the same backlight system as the LG LE8500 , then it too could fall victim to the zone banding of the LG which would not be good.

I find it annoying for daylight viewing. I much prefer the lower reflective surface on the EX700. On the other hand, the glossy 'plasma like' picture the HX701 produces could offset the glare annoyance for some people.

BTW, has anyone noticed a reduction in the Motionflow impact since the last firmware patch? I don't notice a difference in any of the 3 settings whereas on the EX the effect is VERY noticeable.

I've noticed that even with the latest firmware update that I'm still losing display time. Other than that I'm enjoying my Tv. Mlb on PS3 with online account allows me to watch games a lot cheaper then what cable charges. And streaming in HD looks awesome on larger screen then it does on pc monitor.

I'm all for a C750 sammy versus HX701 comparision.

Me too.
And also for the cheaper C650(670) and EX500 (i'm choosing between these two and i'm located in europe where the EX500 comes with 100hz).

Go into the 'Contact Sony' submenu and the firmware version is listed there. You can download the latest version (for manual thumbdrive install) from the link that hughh provided. If you have a network connection, then the TV will take care of itself if you enable automatic updates.

is it just me or is the TV lagging to intake the remote's commands, especially when it's just turned on?
Yes, it takes a few seconds for the UI application to finish startup and become responsive. I haven't noticed any lag after the initial startup.

Anyone have issues with DVI to HDMI sync at 1080p? My computer shows the black and white 480i boot screens fine but goes blank as soon as Windows starts at 1080p (on TV input HDMI 4). It worked fine on my SXRD.

Do any of you think this within the norm or is this a bum panel?

(I'm a bit late commenting this but I just found this discussion...)

I have a 40HX700 with similar horizontal banding. On mine it's a bit worse than here so I'd say this is how the panel performs. It's noticeable only on vertical pans: on skies and other supposedly uniform areas of the image. Snowy landscapes etc. It's amazing how there seems to be nothing on the market without some kind of a pq snag!

For the great majority of the time i think HX700 still is a very, very good TV. This banding issue is the only thing I can find thats wrong with the HX700.

Hello!

Has anyone successfully configured PS3ms to work with HX701??

Thanks!

I'm just happy I don't have issues with the TV. Enjoying the HD. Has anyone tried a generic USB wifi adapter instead of the Sony UAW BR-100? Does it work? Is it worth getting it?

Apparently, the set only has support for the specific Sony adapter.

Has anyone loaded the new firmware (4.020, 5/28/2010) here?:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...mdl=KDL55HX701

Improvements, problems?

Also, are there any more inclusive pdf manuals available than those found on the (same) Sony esupport site here?:

Thanks,
Bob

This is one slow forum!

At any rate, I've been perusing the EX500 thread, which, I believe, is similar to the HX701 (given that I originally researched and intended to purchase the ex500 and was given the choice to buy a KDL-55HX701 for the same price, which I did).

I applied the settings at the following link and found that, much to my surprise, they improved PQ greatly. With a few tweaks to this and that setting, I'm quite happy with the results. I think it likely that these 'tweaks' will vary for each given set and its environment:

I think this particular thread is slow because there aren't that many people with the HX701.
